In recent years, population-based studies have reported a considerable burden of disease among patients with psoriasis. Cumulative epidemiological data suggests that patients with psoriasis have an increased incidence and prevalence of cardio-metabolic comorbidities and a disease-severity dependent relationship is often reported. An accepted classification system is the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), where one proposed categorization suggests that a score of less than 7 as mild, a score between 7 and 12 is moderate, and a score greater than 12 is consistent with severe psoriasis...

The involvement of fructose in cardiometabolic health continues to be a controversial topic. In just the last twelve months, there have been at least eight reviews published on the subject. Four of these reviews detailed mechanisms by which dietary fructose may have direct deleterious on effects on human health [1-4]. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Alopecia areata (AA), a prevalent inflammatory cause of hair loss, lacks FDA-approved therapeutics for extensive cases, which are associated with very poor rates of spontaneous hair regrowth and major psychological distress. Current treatments for severe cases include broad immune-suppressants, which are associated with significant adverse effects, precluding long-term use, with rapid hair loss following treatment termination. As a result of the extent of the disease in severe cases, topical contact sensitizers and intralesional treatments are of limited use...

We observed the promoting effects of the 2940-nm erbium:YAG (Er:YAG) fractional laser in topical drug delivery for psoriasis. A total of five (four males and one female) recalcitrant psoriasis patients were given laser treatment eight times at 1-week intervals with the following parameters: 5-11% spot density and 100-μm energy depth. The psoriatic skin lesions on the left knee and the corresponding lesions at the right ones of each psoriasis patient were randomly divided into two groups: laser + topical drug group (L) and drug alone group (D)...

Glucocorticoid eye drops are one of the most widely used medications in ophthalmology. However, little is known about the effects of glucocorticoids on corneal epithelial cells that are directly exposed to topically-administered glucocorticoids. Here we investigated the effects of prednisolone, a synthetic glucocorticoid analogue frequently used in the clinic, on corneal epithelial cells. Results showed that prednisolone decreased survival of corneal epithelial cells by inhibiting proliferation and inducing apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner...

We conduct textual analysis of a sample of more than 200,000 papers written on HIV/AIDS during the past three decades. Using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation method, we disentangle studies that address behavioral and social aspects from other studies and measure the trends of different topics as related to HIV/AIDS. We show that there is a regional variation in scientists' approach to the problem of HIV/AIDS. Our results show that controlling for the economy, proximity to the HIV/AIDS problem correlates with the extent to which scientists look at the behavioral and social aspects of the disease rather than biomedical...

Ischemic heart disease(IHD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Despite development of continuously improving therapeutic strategies, morbidity and mortality of patients with IHD remains relatively high. Exosomes are a subpopulation of vesicles that are universally recognized as major mediators in intercellular communication. Numerous preclinical studies showed that these tiny vesicles were protective in IHD, through such actions as alleviating myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury, promoting angiogenesis, inhibiting fibrosis and facilitating cardiac regeneration...

BACKGROUND: Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are increasingly recognized as having an important role in the delivery of mental health services for youth. Recent studies have evaluated young people's access and use of technology, as well as their perspectives on using technology to receive mental health information, services, and support; however, limited attention has been given to the perspectives of family members in this regard. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the perspectives of family members on the use of ICTs to deliver mental health services to youth within the context of specialized early intervention for a first-episode psychosis (FEP)...

The Broström-Gould procedure is an effective procedure for chronic lateral ankle instability. However, long-term studies are limited, and the durability of this procedure remains unclear. A systematic review of the published data was undertaken to determine the outcomes and incidence of revision after long-term follow-up. Eleven studies involving 669 Broström-Gould procedures met the inclusion criteria. The revision rate was 1.2% at a weighted mean follow-up period of 8.4 years. Our systematic review of the available data revealed that the Broström-Gould procedure results in low revision rates for chronic lateral ankle instability...

Reconstructing functional skin after a wound remains a challenge due to the complexity of healing. In this regard, biocompatible nanoparticles (NPs) carrying and releasing bioactive drugs in a controlled and sustained manner may significantly improve the efficacy of wound therapies compared with current treatments. Topical administration of drug-loaded NPs allows optimal delivery to the dermis and improves product efficacy. Furthermore, associating NPs with scaffolds represents a new concept of 'dressing'. Experimental in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro models have been developed in preclinical assays to evaluate the beneficial effects of nanoparticulate dressings...

BACKGROUND: Intraocular involvement of systemic T-cell lymphomas are uncommon and have been broadly regarded as markers of poor prognosis. We reported two cases of uveitis patients finally diagnosed as systemic T cell lymphoma. CASE PRESENTATION: Case one is a 19-year-old female presented with fever and liver dysfunction, and was diagnosed as EBV-associated chronic active hepatitis. Fourteen months later, she suffered from recurrent granulomatous anterior uveitis in both eyes, which failed to respond to steroid and immunosuppressant therapy...

Histatin5 (Hst-5) is a member of the histatin family of antimicrobial peptides secreted by human parotid and submandibular glands. With the natural antibacterial activity, it plays an important role in the first-line barrier of oral cave against pathogens, especially for the fungal intrusion. In this study, we explored the utility of Hst-5 in the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis, a common condition of women of the childbearing age. we used a synthesized Hst-5 over five consecutive days as the topical treatment in a murine model of vulvovaginal candidiasis...

Substance use disorders (SUD) are one of the most frequent mental disorders among adults. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common mental health issues in childhood and adolescence, often persisting in adulthood. ADHD in childhood and adolescence is a robust predictor of tobacco, alcohol and illicit substance use in adulthood. Prevalence of comorbid ADHD in SUD patients is high. Nearly one quarter of these patients fulfill the DSM IV criteria for ADHD. Integrated concepts for treatment of SUD and ADHD are needed, but rare up to now...

During the recent years an increase of mastectomy rates in early breast cancer patients has been observed. Nevertheless, several large population-based studies reported a possible improved outcome after breast conserving therapy compared to radical surgery, after all the adjustments. We hereby summarize our opinion on this topic suggesting that these robust and consistent data might challenge the statement that breast conserving therapy is merely not inferior to radical surgery.

Parenchymal transection during hepatobiliary surgery can disrupt small vasculature or bile ducts, which could be managed difficultly. Sealants are helpful tools to achieve better hemostasis. The aim of this study is to analyze the hemostatic efficiency of four modern sealants in a porcine model. In this study, 40 landrace pigs were assigned equally to the control (without sealant) and four sealant groups. Standardized liver resection and splenic lesions were performed and left without using sealant (control) or treated with one of the following sealants: TachoSil(®) , Tissucol Duo(®) , Coseal(®) , and FloSeal(®) ...

Sexuality involves a broad range of expressions of intimacy and is fundamental to self-dentification, with strong cultural, biologic, and psychologic components. Obstetrician-gynecologists often are consulted by patients about sexual health and are in a unique position to open a dialogue on sexual health issues. Several obstacles to frank conversations with patients about sexual health exist, including a lack of adequate training and confidence in the topic, a perception that there are few treatment options, a lack of adequate clinical time to obtain a sexual history, patients' reluctance to initiate the conversation, and the underestimation of the prevalence of sexual dysfunction...
