Environmental benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) and itsmetabolite benzo(a)pyrene-7, 8-dihydrodiol-9, 10-epoxide (BPDE), classic endocrine disrupting chemical and persistent organic pollutant, could cause miscarriage. However, the detailed mechanisms are still largely unclear and should be further explored. In this study, we discovered that exposure of trophoblast cells with BPDE could suppressed cell invasion/migration by inhibiting MEST/VIM (Vimentin) pathway. Moreover, BPDE exposure also increased lnc-HZ01 expression level, which further inhibited MEST/VIM pathway and then suppressed invasion/migration...

Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is a pregnancy where the growing blastocyst implants outside the endometrial cavity. EP account approximately for 0.5-1% of all pregnancies, and extrauterine implant is the leading cause of woman mortality in the first trimester of gestation. Non-tubal pregnancies (NTP) account for less than 5% of all EP. NTP are accompanied by a 7-8 times higher risk of maternal mortality when compared to tubal pregnancies, and their treatment might sometimes be very challenging. Subserosal pregnancy (SP) has been defined as rare variant of intramural pregnancy, where a portion of the gestational sac was surrounded only by the serosa of the uterus...

Prostate cancer screening often relies on cost-intensive MRIs and invasive needle biopsies. Transrectal ultrasound imaging, as a more affordable and non-invasive alternative, faces the challenge of high inter-class similarity and intra-class variability between benign and malignant prostate cancers. This complexity requires more stringent differentiation of subtle features for accurate auxiliary diagnosis. In response, we introduce the novel Deep Augmented Metric Learning (DAML) network, specifically tailored for ultrasound-based prostate cancer classification...

OBJECTIVE: Early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases is a crucial task in medical practice. With the application of computer audition in the healthcare field, artificial intelligence (AI) has been applied to clinical non-invasive intelligent auscultation of heart sounds to provide rapid and effective pre-screening. However, AI models generally require large amounts of data which may cause privacy issues. Unfortunately, it is difficult to collect large amounts of healthcare data from a single centre...

BACKGROUND: Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a recently developed, non-invasive in vivo imaging technique to map the spatial distribution of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) in animal tissues with high sensitivity and speed. It is a challenge to reconstruct images directly from the received signals of MPI device due to the complex physical behavior of the nanoparticles. System matrix and X-space are two commonly used MPI reconstruction methods, where the former is extremely time-consuming and the latter usually produces blurry images...

In the United States, lung cancer is the second most common type of cancer with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) encompassing around 85% of total lung cancer cases. Late-stage patients with metastatic disease have worsening prognosis, highlighting the importance of longitudinal disease monitoring. Liquid biopsy (LBx) represents a way for physicians to non-invasively track tumor analytes, such as circulating tumor cells (CTCs), and understand tumor progression in real-time through analyzing longitudinal blood samples...

For patients monitored in intensive care units in the aftermath of a cardiac arrest, one of the well-established difficulties of care after resuscitation is the ability to perform the necessary prognostic assessments as accurately and early as possible. Although current guidelines include algorithms to determine prognosis, there are still missing links and uncertainties. Biomarkers obtained from peripheral blood are generally non-invasive and easy to obtain. Although the potential to use microRNA as a prognostic biomarker after cardiac arrest has received less interest recently, its popularity has increased in the last few years...

To preserve the bladder without compromising survival, further treatments need to be optimized to prevent the recurrence and progression of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. In clinical practice, transurethral resection of bladder tumors is essential for bladder cancer management. The primary goal of surgery is to achieve accurate pathological evaluation and complete resection of bladder cancer; high resection quality is required for the procedure. A representative surrogate indicator of the resection quality is the presence of the detrusor muscle in the resection specimen...

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis and treatment of lower respiratory tract infections is the mainstay of management of lung disease in cystic fibrosis (CF). When sputum samples are unavailable, diagnosis relies mainly on cultures from oropharyngeal specimens; however, there are concerns about whether this approach is sensitive enough to identify lower respiratory organisms. Bronchoscopy and related procedures such as bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) are invasive but allow the collection of lower respiratory specimens from non-sputum producers...

Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are a type of extracellular vesicle that carries many types of molecular information. The identification of sEVs is essential for the non-invasive detection and treatment of illnesses. Hence, there is a significant need for the development of simple, sensitive, and precise methods for sEV detection. Herein, a DNA tweezers-based assay utilizing a "turn-on" mechanism and proximity ligation was suggested for the efficient and rapid detection of sEVs through amplified fluorescence...

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a neuropsychological syndrome that is characterized by cognitive impairments. It typically affects adults 60 years of age and older. It is a noticeable decline in the cognitive function of the patient, and if left untreated it gets converted to Alzheimer's disease (AD). For that reason, early diagnosis of MCI is important as it slows down the conversion of the disease to AD. Early and accurate diagnosis of MCI requires recognition of the clinical characteristics of the disease, extensive testing, and long-term observations...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative dementia worldwide. AD is a multifactorial disease that causes a progressive decline in memory and function precipitated by toxic beta-amyloid (Aβ) proteins, a key player in AD pathology. In 2022, 6.5 million Americans lived with AD, costing the nation $321billion. The standard of care for AD treatment includes acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AchEIs), NMDA receptor antagonists, and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). However, these methods are either: 1) ineffective in improving cognition, 2) unable to change disease progression, 3) limited in the number of therapeutic targets, 4) prone to cause severe side effects (brain swelling, microhemorrhages with mAb, and bradycardia and syncope with AchEIs), 5) unable to effectively cross the blood-brain barrier, and 6) lack of understanding of the aging process on the disease...

BACKGROUND: Several genetic and metabolic variables, most notably the variation in the adipokine gene rs1501298, have been linked to metabolic-associated fatty liver disease etiopathogenesis (MAFLD). Liver biopsy, the gold standard for diagnosing MAFLD, is an invasive procedure; therefore, alternative diagnostic methods are required. Consequently, the integration of these metabolic variables with some of the patients' characteristics may facilitate the development of noninvasive diagnostic methods that aid in the early detection of MAFLD, identification of at-risk individuals and planning of management strategies...
