Corneal blindness ranks third among the causes of blindness worldwide, after cataract and glaucoma. Corneal transplantation offers us a means to address this, and is currently the most commonly performed transplantation procedure worldwide - restoring the gift of sight to many an eye. Eye banks play a very important role in these procedures. India was quick to develop its own eye bank in 1945 soon after the launch of world's first eye bank in 1944. The evolution over the past six decades has been tremendous, placing India on the top, with one of the largest eye-banking system in the world...

The sea area around the Orkney archipelago, Scotland is subjected to substantial maritime shipping activities. By contract, the Svalbard archipelago, Norway currently has a rather low marine traffic profile. Future projections, however, indicate that the Trans-Arctic route might change the whole transportation picture and Svalbard may be at the centre of maritime activities. Both archipelagos have sensitive environmental resources at sea and inland, including bird communities. There are, for instance, 13 Red Listed species present in Orkney and 2 in Svalbard...

UNLABELLED: Vascular ectasias are characterized by abnormal blood vessel enlargement and presumed to be caused by degenerative processes. About 3% of lower gastrointestinal bleeding is caused by it. On endoscopy, colonic arteriovenous malformations are frequently solitary, sizable, flat, or raised red lesions. Conversely, colonic vascular ectasia that manifests as pedunculated polypoid lesions are rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old woman presented with hematochezia and abdominal pain...

Optical fiber (OF) sensors are critical optical devices with excellent sensing capabilities and the capacity to operate in remote and hostile environments. However, integrating functional materials and micro/nanostructures into the optical fiber systems for specific sensing applications has limitations of compatibility, readiness, poor control, robustness, and cost-effectiveness. Herein, we have demonstrated the fabrication and integration of stimuli-responsive optical fiber probe sensors using a novel, low-cost, and facile 3D printing process...

BACKGROUND: Early language difficulties are associated with poor school readiness and can impact lifelong attainment. The quality of the early home language environment is linked to language outcomes. However, few home-based language interventions have sufficient evidence of effectiveness in improving preschool children's language abilities. This study reports the first stage in the evaluation of a theory-based programme, Talking Together (developed and delivered by BHT Early Education and Training) given over 6 weeks to families in the home setting...

Recent years have witnessed the major advances of nanolights with extensive exploration of nano-luminescent materials like carbon dots (CDs). However, solvent-free processing of these materials remains a formidable challenge, impeding endeavors to develop advanced manufacturing techniques. Herein, in response to this challenge, liquid crystallization is demonstrated as a versatile and robust approach by deliberately anchoring flexible alkyl chains on the CDs surface. Alkyl chain grafting on the CDs surface is observed to substantially depress the common aggregation-caused quenching effect, and results in a shift of self-assembly structure from the crystalline phase to smectic liquid crystalline phase...

BACKGROUND: Steatosis is the most common liver disease worldwide and the leading cause of liver-associated morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to explore the differences in blood parameters and dietary habits in non-obese patients with and without steatosis. METHODS: The present study included 987 participants with BMI < 30, assessed in the fourth recall of the MICOL study. Patients were divided by steatosis grade, and a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) with 28 food groups was administered...

UNLABELLED: Butterfly pea ( Clitoria ternatea ) flowers are widely used for culinary purposes in southern Asian countries. We assessed the optimal level of a butterfly pea petal extract (BPPE) to produce blue rice. Dried butterfly pea petals were extracted with water at 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8% ( w / v ), and the extract was used to color boiled rice before cooking was completed. Rice cooked with BPPE acquired various shades of blue from light to dark. Significantly decreased lightness/darkness ( L *), redness/greenness ( a *), yellowness/blueness ( b *), and color difference ( ∆E *) were observed in response to BPPE levels, while hue ( h *) and chroma ( C *) were significantly increased ( p  < 0...

The worldwide consumption of ready-to-eat seafood products has steadily increased due to a range of health benefits. However, depending on the handling or cutting process of raw fish, ready-to-eat sashimi can be exposed to microbiological risks that can lead to foodborne infection by marine pathogens. Since surface characteristics are key factors for microbial adhesion and biofilm formation, the present study aims to determine the correlation between raw fish skin properties and Vibrio parahaemolyticus biofilm formation...

During the production of snake antivenoms, the animals used as immunoglobulin source are subjected to processes that could deteriorate their physical condition. Therefore, these conditions must be carefully designed and validated. In this work, the immunization and bleeding protocols applied to horses used to produce the African polyspecific antivenom EchiTAb-plus-ICP were evaluated regarding their effects on the horses' health. The study focused on horses that had been previously immunized with venoms and then received periodic booster venom injections for antivenom production...

In order to facilitate Golden Gate DNA assembly, we have constructed a collection of Bacillus subtilis replicative plasmids representing five origins of replication derived from plasmids pUB110, pE194, pWV01, pBS72, and pTH1030. The first three of these plasmids use rolling circle replication and the latter two use theta replication. All of the plasmids carry the same multiple cloning site surrounded by transcriptional terminators. The plasmids are about three kilobases in size, allowing them to be easily amplified by inverse PCR using a common set of primers to generate cloning-ready amplicons...

The results indicated that among all formulations, the F7 formula comprised brown rice (15 g), pumpkin (32.5 g), sweetcorn (12.5 g), red tilapia (17.5 g), rice bran oil (1...

A desirable lanthanide-based ratiometric fluorescent probe was designed and integrated into a self-designed Fermat spiral microfluidic chip (FS-MC) for the automated determination of a unique bacterial endospore biomarker, dipicolinic acid (DPA), with high selectivity and sensitivity. Here, a blue emission wavelength at 425 nm was generated in the Fermat spiral structure by mixing the europium (Eu3+ ) and luminol to form the Eu3+ /Luminol sensing probe. DPA in the reservoir can be used to specifically bind to Eu3+ under the negative pressure and transfer energy from DPA to Eu3+ sequentially via an antenna effect, thus resulting in a significant increase in the red fluorescence emission peak at 615 nm...

Little is known about its magnetic susceptibility profiles indicative of biological processes such as iron deposition and demyelination. This study aims to clarify (1) the pattern of susceptibility in PAOS patients, (2) the susceptibility differences between the phonetic (characterized by predominance of distorted sound substitutions and additions) and prosodic (characterized by predominance of slow speech rate and segmentation) subtypes of PAOS, and (3) the relationships between susceptibility and symptom severity...
