BACKGROUND: The majority of South African healthcare workers are Black Africans with dark-pigmented skin. Studies on how the markers of skin barrier function and natural moisturising factor (NMF) compare between dark and light-pigmented skin are limited. Quantifying NMF in a nursing student population during their practical training at university may provide valuable insight into their potential susceptibility to skin conditions associated with low NMF. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to quantify and compare NMF content of Black African, Mixed Race and White nursing students from their dominant dorsal hand...

OBJECTIVE: To predict spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) (labor before 37 weeks of pregnancy) in low-risk singleton pregnancies during the second trimester, using ultrasound markers: uterocervical angle (UCA) and cervical length (CL). METHODS: In a prospective observational cohort study, we followed primigravid women with singleton pregnancies without known risk factors for sPTB from 16+0- 23+6 weeks of pregnancy until birth. Transvaginal ultrasonography on admission revealed the UCA and CL, and maternal history was obtained from submitted patient profiles...

PURPOSE: With about ten-fold smaller diameter than MBs, nanobubbles (NBs) were developed as new-generation ultrasound contrast agents (UCA) able to extravasate and target specific receptors expressed on extravascular cancer cells, such as the prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA). It has been shown that PSMA-targeted NBs (PSMA-NBs) can bind to specific prostate cancer (PCa) cells and exhibit a prolonged retention effect (PRE), observable by NB-based CEUS (NB-CEUS). However, previous analyses of PRE were mainly limited to the semi-quantitative assessment of the time-intensity curve (TIC) in an entire tumor ROI, possibly losing information on tumor spatial heterogeneity and local characteristics...

In this paper, we introduce a Reduced-Dimension Multiple-Signal Classification (RD-MUSIC) technique via Higher-Order Orthogonal Iteration (HOOI), which facilitates the estimation of the target range and angle for Frequency-Diverse Array Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (FDA-MIMO) radars in the unfolded coprime array with unfolded coprime frequency offsets (UCA-UCFO) structure. The received signal undergoes tensor decomposition by the HOOI algorithm to get the core and factor matrices, then the 2D spectral function is built...

Ionizing radiation can induce different types of DNA lesions, leading to genomic instability and ultimately cell death. Radiation therapy or radiotherapy, a major modality in cancer treatment, harnesses the genotoxic potential of radiation to target and destroy cancer cells. Nevertheless, cancer cells have the capacity to develop resistance to radiation treatment (radioresistance), which poses a major obstacle in the effective management of cancer. It has been shown that administration of platinum-based drugs to cancer patients can increase tumor radiosensitivity, but despite this, it is associated with severe adverse effects...

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a common cause of death. The majority of SCA is caused by ventricular arrhythmia due to underlying CHD. Aborted SCA with no apparent diagnosis after initial assessment with ECG, echocardiography and coronary assessment is referred to as unexplained cardiac arrest (UCA). Systematic evaluation of such patients may reveal a specific diagnosis in up to half of patients before a diagnosis of idiopathic VF is assigned. Specific diagnoses include inherited cardiac conditions, such as latent cardiomyopathies or inherited primary electrical disease...

This study aims to investigate the effects of Chorum glandulosum Boiss. et Huet (CG) on the intestinal microbiota and serum bile acid (BA) in db/db mice. A total of 12 db/db mice were randomly divided into model (MOD), high-dose CG (CGH), and control (CON) groups. The CON and MOD groups received distilled water by gavage for 8 weeks. Whereas, the CGH group received an alcohol extract of CG at a dose of 200 mg/kg/day. Results showed that CG can reduce blood lipid levels. It change the composition of the intestinal microbiota, and increase the relative abundances of Muribaculaceae, Prevotellaceae, Bifidobacterium_pseudolongum , Bacteroidaceae in db/db mice as well...

This paper presents an algorithm for ultrafast ultrasound localization microscopy (ULM) used for the detection, localization, accumulation, and rendering of intravenously injected ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) enabling to yield hemodynamic maps of the brain microvasculature. It consists in integrating a robust principal component analysis (RPCA)-based approach into the ULM process for more robust tissue filtering, resulting in more accurate ULM images. Numerical experiments conducted on an in vivo rat brain perfusion dataset demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach compared to the most widely used state-of-the-art method...

A 5-year-old intact male mixed-breed dog presented with a 3-day history of stranguria and dysuria. Results of physical examination, plain radiographs, and ultrasonography were consistent with a traumatic urethral stricture in the prescrotal urethra just under the previous trauma region, resulting in partial obstruction of urine outflow. Contrast-enhanced voiding urosonography (CE-VUS) was performed, and a urethral stricture was confirmed. The dog underwent surgery. A scrotal urethrostomy was performed. After 3 days of hospitalization, the dog was discharged from the Clinic...

Sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) are the first station of lymph nodes that extend from the breast tumor to the axillary lymphatic drainage. The pathological status of these LNs can predict that of the entire axillary lymph node. Therefore, the accurate identification of SLNs is necessary for sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) to replace axillary lymph node dissection (ALND). The quality of life and prognosis of breast cancer patients are related to proper surgical treatment after the precise identification of SLNs...

In this paper, we propose a novel simultaneous Correlative Interferometer (CI) technique that elaborately estimates the Direction of Arrival (DOA) of multiple source signals incident on an antenna array. The basic idea of the proposed technique is that the antenna-array-based receiver compares the phase of the received signal with one of the candidates at each time sample and jointly exploits these multiple time samples to estimate the DOAs of multiple signal sources. The proposed simultaneous CI-based DOA estimation technique collectively utilizes multiple time-domain samples and can be regarded as a generalized version of the conventional CI algorithm for the case of multiple time-domain samples...
