A 29-year old man is admitted in our hospital for a dry cough which appeared a few weeks earlier and is now associated with a breath depending thoracic pain. As an engineer, he is realizing a thesis about the sound waves produced by coughing and is therefore frequently exposed to patients with various pulmonary infections. The chest X-ray, presents predominant pulmonary infiltrates on the periphery of the upper fields of the lungs. Blood analysis revealed a hypereosinophilia of 4.650/microl. The various bacteriological, parasitic and viral investigation tests are negative...

AIM: The sexual aggressions pose an important medico - legal problem. The implication of several services is often indispensable to determine the future of this aggression. Our survey objectives were to determine epidemiological and clinical characteristics of sexual aggressions and to specify the judicial continuations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We did historical cohort survey while recruiting all cases of consultation in the service for sexual aggressions. This survey spreads on a period of 60 months going from January 2004 to December 2008...

We report a case of a young HIV-infected woman treated for more than ten years by highly active antiretroviral therapy, presenting a peroperative acute coronary syndrome caused by a hypertensive episode after systemic resorption of locally applied epinephrine during a functional endoscopic sinus surgery. Since patients with multiple risk factors for coronary artery desease seems to be more susceptible to complications of epinephrine injection, this reminds us of the higher cardiovascular risk for HIV patients with long term treatment...

Among the known species of Burkholderia only two are obligate pathogens, i.e., B. mallei and B. pseudomallei, causative agents of glanders and melioidosis respectively. The other species are saprophytes as natural inhabitants of water reservoirs and soil, still capable of causing opportunistic infections in humans and animals under definite conditions. All the species of Burkholderia are characterized by high resistance to antibacterials, including antibiotics. By the MICs, the most efficient chemotherapeutics against pathogenic burkholderias are tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, penems and combined sulfanilamides...

INTRODUCTION: Infectious diseases are a part of the history of this region. Devastating epidemics of plague, smallpox, and cholera were frequent during the 18th and the 19th centuries. Other infectious diseases were a serious problem as well: alimentary tract infections, scarlet fever, diphtheria, whooping cough. Geographic position, climate, migrations, as well as the tradition and lack of medical staff and medications, affected the frequency and outcome of infections. THE HISTORY OF THE TREATMENT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES: Patients with infectious diseases were first treated at home...

In summary, altered intestinal ecology is very important in the pathogenesis of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis. Prevention of AAD has been demostrated with LactobacillusGG, Enterococcus SF68, and S. boulardii. While therapy with antibitics such as vancomycin or metranidazole is effective for PMC, relapse can occur and is difficult to treat. Antibiotics can be given, but another approach of restoring the normal colonic ecology may be more effective. Such therapy has included use of the nontoxigenic strains of C...

The aim of our study was to improve the detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by measuring alfa-fetoprotein (AFP) in addition to other molecular markers by estimating the plasma levels of human catalytic fraction of reverse telomerase (hTERT) DNA, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) in 75 patients with liver desease. The nasal mucosa is one of the anatomical region which have the highest density of sensory innervation. The function of this sensory innervation is probably linked to the protection of the lower airways against inhalation of airborne particles and potentially harmful substances. Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is associated with nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, loss of sense of smell and facial pain or headaches. When allergy or specific hyperreactivity, infection, systemic or genetic deseases have been excluded, the diagnosis of non specific hyperreactivity or neurogenic inflammation is proposed...

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is the etiological agent contributing to development of Kaposi's sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma, and multicentric Castleman desease. Following primary infection, latency is typically established. However, the mechanism by which KSHV establishes latency is not understood. We have reported that the latency-associated nuclear antigen (LANA) can repress RTA (for replication and transcription activator) expression by down-regulating its promoter. In this study, we show that RTA is associated with the virion particle...

Malignant hemopathies are not considered as public health priority in Senegal because of their infrequency in comparison with infections and malnutrition. However they remain usually lethal instead of a great improvement of their prognosis in suitable therapeutic conditions. The objective of this study was to determine the epidemiologic and evolutionnal profile of these pathologies, and identify practical management problems in a reference public pediatric service in Senegal. We retrospectively analysed hospitals registers and records of all patients followed up in Albert Royer Children Hospital of Dakar from january 1989 to december 1998...

Cystoscopy revealed bleeding from the dome of the bladder wall. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass extending from the dome of the bladder to just below the umbilicus. A urachal tumor was clinically suspected, and the mass was resected together with urachal remnant and part of the bladder wall. Pathological diagnosis of the specimen was actinomycosis. According to the World Health Organization there are 2 million new cases each year and 1/10 of the world's population is at risk of infection. This data was used to characterize the clinical and epidemiological profiles of the endemic desease in the population, allowing for the determination of the efficacy of the potable water supply and the specific treatment of those infected with S. mansoni. The district contains three locations, Ravenopolis, Ravena and Lavapes, where the prevalence of the endemic disease was, 20...

The results show activity of esterase increases 100% than that of normal Ginseng; activity of polyphenol oxidase increases 60-30% and represent new isoenzyme bands in the early infection in juxtapose transolant experiment.

Juan José Cazzulo
Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of the American Trypanosomiasis, Chagas Disease, contains cysteine, serine, threonine and metallo proteinases. Aspartic proteinases have not been found so far. The most abundant among these enzymes is cruzipain, a cysteine proteinase expressed as a complex mixture of isoforms by the major developmental stages of the parasite, including some membrane-bound isoforms. The enzyme is an immunodominant antigen in human chronic Chagas disease and seems to be important in the host/parasite relationship...
