Pandemics and government-mandated quarantining measures have a substantial impact on mental health. This study investigated the psychological impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis on Italian residents during the first week of government-imposed lockdown and the role of defense mechanisms as protective factors against distress. In this cross-sectional study, 5,683 Italians responded to an online survey assessing socio-demographics, overall psychological distress, post-traumatic symptoms, and defense mechanisms using validated measures as the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), and the Defense Mechanisms Rating Scale-Self-Report-30 (DMRS-SR-30)...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The decline in hospital mortality in children hospitalized with sepsis has increased the number of survivors. These survivors are at risk for adverse long-term outcomes, including readmission and recurrent or unresolved infections. We described the epidemiology of 90-day readmissions after sepsis hospitalization in children. We tested the hypothesis that a sepsis hospitalization increases odds of 90-day readmissions. METHODS: Retrospective cohort analysis of the Nationwide Readmissions Database...

PURPOSE: Informal caregivers (ICs) provide care and improve the quality of life of patients with malignant brain tumor. We analyze the impact of their involvement on themselves from a triple perspective. METHODS: Home-dwelling patients with primary malignant brain tumor underwent a medical examination. ICs burden was evaluated by a self-administered postal questionnaire. Objective burden (Informal Care Time, ICT), subjective burden (Zarit Burden Inventory, ZBI), and financial burden (valuation of lost earnings using the Replacement and Opportunity Cost Methods, RCM, OCM) were evaluated...

PETbox4 is a new, fully tomographic bench top PET scanner dedicated to high sensitivity and high resolution imaging of mice. This manuscript characterizes the performance of the prototype system using the National Electrical Manufacturers Association NU 4-2008 standards, including studies of sensitivity, spatial resolution, energy resolution, scatter fraction, count-rate performance and image quality. The PETbox4 performance is also compared with the performance of PETbox, a previous generation limited angle tomography system...

There were 121 men with hormonally refractory metastatic cancer of the prostate who were randomized to receive estramustine phosphate or vincristine, or the combination of these 2 agents. All patients had received prior radiation therapy (greater than 2,000 rad). There were 90 patients who could be compared for response. The objective response rates (partial regression or stabilization of disease) for the 3 treatment groups were 26 per cent for estramustine phosphate, 24 per cent for estramustine phosphate plus vincristine and 15 per cent for vincristine...

We carried out a randomized double-blind controlled secondary-prevention trial of oxprenolol over seven years. Forty milligrams of oxprenolol or placebo was given twice daily to 1103 men 35 to 65 years old who had an acute myocardial infarction between 1 and 90 months previously. Overall, there was no difference in mortality or cardiac events between the placebo and oxprenolol groups. The major influence on prognosis was the time at which treatment was started after infarction. In 417 patients in whom treatment was started within four months of infarction oxprenolol increased the six-year cumulative survival rate from 77 to 95 per cent (P less than 0...

We assigned randomly 90 patients treated previously for superficial transitional cell carcinoma to conventional followup or prophylactic treatment. This followup study details the late incidence of recurrence (29 of 45 patients in the prophylactic group and 34 of 45 controls), the progression of tumor grade and stage, the deaths and causes (24 patients), and the influence of initial stage, grade, carcinoma in situ and positive cytology on the outcome of treatment.

Monoclonal antibodies (McAbs) to human bladder carcinoma were generated by fusion of NS-1 mouse myeloma cells with spleen cells from BALB/c mice immunized with either cultured human bladder cancer cells or cells obtained from a fresh surgically removed bladder tumor. Four hybridomas which reacted strongly with bladder tumor cells and not to normal skin fibroblasts or urothelial cells were identified and cloned by limiting dilution to obtain monoclonality. One McAb, 3G2-C6, raised with cultured tumor bladder cells MGH-U1 (EJ) as the immunogen reacted more strongly to the bladder tumor lines tested than any of the other McAbs resulting from various fusion experiments...

Seventeen patients with stable intermittent claudication and a PCV of more than 0.45 were venesected until a PCV of 0.35 was achieved. Only patients that were not considered candidates for surgical treatment were entered into the study. Each patient acted as their own control and was studied twice before the venesection at a mean PCV of 0.49 then after achieving a PCV of 0.35 or less (mean PCV of 0.33), and finally one month after the last venesection (mean PCV of 0.37). Angina developed in one patient after the third venesection and was withdrawn from the study...
