The luxS mutant strains of Shewanella putrefaciens (SHP) were constructed to investigate the regulations of gene luxS in spoilage ability. The potential regulations of AI-2 quorum sensing (QS) system and activated methyl cycle (AMC) were studied by analyzing the supplementation roles of key circulating substances mediated via luxS, including S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH), methionine (Met), homocysteine (Hcy) and 4,5-dihydroxy-2,3-pentanedione (DPD). Growth experiments revealed that the luxS deletion led to certain growth limitations of SHP, which were associated with culture medium and exogenous additives...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Renal dysfunction necessitates S-1 dose reduction. However, decreased dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) activity may lead to adverse events due to 5-FU. The guidelines provided by pharmaceutical companies state that total bilirubin (T-Bil) should be ≤upper limit of normal (ULN)×1.5 as a reference value for safely taking S-1. Nevertheless, the relationship between the degree of liver dysfunction and S-1 dose reduction has not been clearly established. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study focused on patients who received S-1 monotherapy for various types of cancer...

The molecule (S)-4,5-dihydroxy-2,3-pentanedione (DPD) is produced by many different species of bacteria and is involved in bacterial communication. DPD is the precursor of signal molecule autoinducer-2 (AI-2) and has high potential to be used as a vaccine adjuvant. Vaccine adjuvants are compounds that enhance the stability and immunogenicity of vaccine antigens, modulate efficacy, and increase the immune response to a particular antigen. Previously, the microparticulate form of (S)-DPD was found to have an adjuvant effect with the gonorrhea vaccine...

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective study to analyze the safety and efficacy of DPd versus DKd in daratumumab naïve RRMM patients treated in real-world practice. RESULTS: A total of 187 patients with RRMM were included in the analysis; 128 patients received DPd, and 59 patients received DKd. A vast majority (80%) of patients had lenalidomide refractory disease and nearly 50% had bortezomib refractory disease. The overall response and complete response rates were 76% and 34% in the DPd group versus 80% and 51% in the DKd group, respectively...

We analytically study friction and dissipation of a driven bead in a 1D harmonic chain, and analyze the role of internal damping mechanism as well as chain length. Specifically, we investigate Dissipative Particle Dynamics and Langevin Dynamics, as paradigmatic examples that do and do not display translational symmetry, with distinct results: For identical parameters, the friction forces can differ by many orders of magnitude. For slow driving, a Goldstone mode traverses the entire system, resulting in friction of the driven bead that grows arbitrarily large (Langevin) or gets arbitrarily small (Dissipative Particle Dynamics) with system size...

Reaction-induced phase separation occurs during the curing reaction when a thermoplastic resin is dissolved in a thermoset resin, which enables toughening of the thermoset resin. As resin properties vary significantly depending on the morphology of the phase-separated structure, controlling the morphology formation is of critical importance. Reaction-induced phase separation is a phenomenon that ranges from the chemical reaction scale to the mesoscale dynamics of polymer molecules. In this study, we performed curing simulations using dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) coupled with a reaction model to reproduce reaction-induced phase separation...

The synthesis of specific artificial nanochannels remains a formidable challenge in the field of nanomaterials and synthetic chemistry. In particular, the preparation of artificial nanochannels using amphiphilic graft cyclic-brush copolymers (AGCCs) as monomers has garnered substantial attention. Nevertheless, because of the constrained time and length scales inherent in traditional molecular dynamics simulations, a comprehensive theoretical understanding of the morphological regulation mechanism governing the self-assembly of AGCCs into nanochannels remains elusive...

BACKGROUND: Previous reports on the treatment of sacral and ischial pressure injuries have not provided clear algorithms for surgical therapies. The objective of this study was to establish a reconstruction algorithm to guide the selection of an ideal free-style perforator flap that can be tailored to the defect in question. METHODS: We used 23 perforator flaps to reconstruct 14 sacral and 8 ischial defects in 22 patients over 5 years. A reconstruction algorithm system was developed based on the anatomical features of the perforator vessels (diameter, D; pulsatility [++∼+++], P) and their position in the skin island (DPD) (ie, D+P+DPD)...

Enzymes are popular catalysts with many applications, especially in industry. Biocatalyst usage on a large scale is facing some limitations, such as low operational stability, low recyclability, and high enzyme cost. Enzyme immobilization is a beneficial strategy to solve these problems. Bioinformatics tools can often correctly predict immobilization outcomes, resulting in a cost-effective experimental phase with the least time consumed. This study provides an overview of in silico methods predicting immobilization processes via a comprehensive systematic review of published articles till 11 December 2022...

The competitive behavior of proteins in the reversible adsorption stage plays a crucial role in determining the composition of the protein layer and the subsequent biological responses to the biomaterial. However, such competitive adsorption is a mesoscopic process at physiological protein concentration, and neither a macroscopic experiment nor microscopic MD (molecular dynamics) simulation is suitable to clarify it. Here, we proposed a mesoscopic DPD (dissipative particle dynamics) model to illustrate the competitive process of albumin and fibrinogen on TiO2 surface with its parameters deduced from our previous MD simulation, and proved the model well retained the diffusion and adsorption properties of proteins in the competitive adsorption on the plane surface...

Penile squamous cell carcinoma is a rare, highly aggressive cancer of older men. The metastatic stage has significant therapeutic and prognostic features. Treatment of penile cancer is significantly influenced by the operation, in which an R0 situation must be achieved to ensure a realistic chance of cure. Other local therapeutic procedures such as radiotherapy are often of secondary importance. Neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy are relevant components of multimodal therapy. Post-therapeutically, patients require lifelong, risk-adapted follow-up care...
