BACKGROUND:  Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the most common cause of acute flaccid paralysis worldwide and can be classified into electrophysiological subtypes and clinical variants. OBJECTIVE:  This study aimed to compare the frequency of the sural-sparing pattern (SSP) in subtypes and variants of GBS. METHODS:  This retrospective cohort study analyzed clinical and electrophysiological data of 171 patients with GBS hospitalized in public and private hospitals of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, between 1994 and 2018; all cases were followed up by the same neurologist in a reference neurology center...

BACKGROUND:  Meige's syndrome is a type of facial dystonia characterized by the simultaneous occurrence of blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia. Although botulinum toxin type A (OBTA) injections are the standard treatment, evidence of their effectiveness and safety in this scenario is still lacking. OBJECTIVE:  Our research aimed to evaluate the improvement and occurrence of side effects following injections of onabotulinum toxin type A (OBTA) in patients with Meige's syndrome...

The fungal infection causing white-nose disease in hibernating bats in North America has resulted in dramatic population declines of affected species, since the introduction of the causative agent Pseudogymnoascus destructans. The fungus is native to the Palearctic, where it also infects several bat species, yet rarely causes severe pathology or the death of the host. Pseudogymnoascus destructans infects bats during hibernation by invading and digesting the skin tissue, resulting in the disruption of torpor patterns and consequent emaciation...

METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of patients with Parkinson's disease from our Movement Disorders Unit, who were under treatment with any antidepressant drug and safinamide. Specifically, symptoms suggestive of serotonin syndrome were screened for...

80% of renal carcinomas (RC) are diagnosed incidentally by imaging. 2-4% of "sporadic" multifocality and 5-8% of hereditary syndromes are accepted, probably with underestimation. Multifocality, young age, familiar history, syndromic data, and certain histologies lead to suspicion of hereditary syndrome. Each tumor must be studied individually, with a multidisciplinary evaluation of the patient. Nephron-sparing therapeutic strategies and a radioprotective diagnostic approach are recommended. Relevant data for the radiologist in major RC hereditary syndromes are presented: von-Hippel-Lindau, Chromosome-3 translocation, BRCA-associated protein-1 mutation, RC associated with succinate dehydrogenase deficiency, PTEN, hereditary papillary RC, Papillary thyroid cancer- Papillary RC, Hereditary leiomyomatosis and RC, Birt-Hogg-Dubé, Tuberous sclerosis complex, Lynch, Xp11...

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Mutations in the ARMC5 (armadillo repeat containing 5, OMIM 615549) gene, a putative tumor suppressor gene, have recently been identified as a common cause of sporadic and familial bilateral macronodular adrenal hyperplasia (BMAH). Familial BMAH is thought to be caused by two mutations, one germline and the other somatic, as suggested by the 2-hit theory. The objective is to describe a new mutation and develop its clinical characteristics and implications. METHODS, RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: We present an affected family with 11 members carrying a novel mutation of the ARMC5 gene (NM_001288767...

Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is the most common genetic cause of obesity, occurring in approximately 1 in 15,000 newborns. It results from the lack of expression of genes on the paternal allele of the chromosomal region 15q-11q13 (65-75% due to type 1 or type 2 deletion). Individuals with PWS experience associated symptoms such as hypotonia, hyperphagia, and early-onset obesity (before 5 years of age). Around 20% of adults with PWS also develop type 2 diabetes. Previous studies have shown the beneficial effects of GLP1-RA medications, such as exenatide and liraglutide, in treating type 2 diabetes in PWS...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Smoking is associated with various health risks, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In this retrospective cohort study, we aimed to determine whether smoking is harmful to the whole metabolic system. METHODS: We collected data from 340 randomly selected participants who were divided into three groups: smokers (n=137), non-smokers (n=134), and ex-smokers (n=69). We obtained information on participants' body mass index, waist circumference, indicators of glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, bone metabolism, and uric acid from health screen data during the past three years...
