BACKGROUND: After cardiac arrest, the possibility of death or irreversible complications will highly increase in the absence of cardiac resuscitation within 4 to 6 minutes. Accordingly, measuring the pre-hospital services time intervals is important for better management of emergency medical services delivery. The purpose of this study then was to investigate pre-hospital time intervals for patients with heart attack in Arak city, based on locations and time variables. METHODS: This is a retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study, which was conducted at the Arak Emergency Medical Services (EMS) during 2017-2018...

BACKGROUND: Cardiac transplant (CT) is the sole option in a minority of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC) adults with refractory symptoms or end-stage disease. AIMS/METHODS: We aimed to examine the trends and hospital outcomes of CT in HC using 2003-2011 Nationwide Inpatient Sample database. RESULTS: HC comprised 1.1% of CT (151 of 14,277) performed during this time period (age 45±12 years, 67% male, 79% Caucasians). Number of HC CT increased from 2003 to 2011 (odds ratio=1...

Influenza, pneumonia, and pathogenic infection of the respiratory system are boosted in cold environments. Low temperatures also result in vasoconstriction, restraint of blood flow, and decreased oxygen to the heart, and the risk of a heart attack would increase accordingly. The present face mask fabric fails to preserve its air-filtering function as its electrostatic function vanishes once exposed to water. Therefore, its filtering efficacy would be decreased meaningfully, making it nearly impracticable to reuse the disposable face masks...

OBJECTIVE: Clinical presentation of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia may vary from asymptomatic occurrence or mild perception of palpitation to severe chest pain or syncope. This variation is the most challenging issue in the diagnostic evaluation of rhythm disturbances and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia as well. This study sought to evaluate the symptoms during the tachycardia attack or index event in patients who underwent electrophysiological study and ablation procedure...

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are part of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in developing countries, including South Africa, where they are a major public health issue. Understanding the joint spatial clustering of CVDs and associated risk factors to determine areas in need of enhanced integrated interventions would help develop targeted, cost-effective and productive mediations. We estimated joint spatial associations and clustering patterns of 2 CVDs (stroke and heart attack) and 3 risk factors (hypertension, high blood cholesterol (HBC) and smoking) among adults in South Africa...

Climate change is considered to have great impact on human health. The heat waves have been associated with excess morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) across various populations and geographic locations. Important role in the heat-induced cardiovascular damage has endothelial dysfunction. It has been noticed that hot weather can impair tone and structure of the blood vessels via interfering with variety of biological factors such as nitric oxide synthesize, cytokine production and systemic inflammation...

A 99m Tc-red blood cell (RBC)-labeled multigated acquisition is a procedure in which the patient's RBCs are radiolabeled and imaged with electrocardiography-gated cardiac scintigraphy to assess the heart's pumping efficiency. Cold agglutinin disease, or cold antibody autoimmune hemolytic anemia, is a rare form of autoimmune hemolytic anemia in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys its own RBCs. This case addresses an altered biodistribution pattern of radiolabeled RBCs in the presence of suspected cold agglutinin disease observed during a multigated acquisition...

Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is a popular Chinese herbal medicine, which is considered to warm the stomach and dispel cold in traditional Chinese medicine. Ginger is widely used to treat stomach disorders, and it has been reported to exhibit antithrombotic activity via the inhibition of platelet aggregation and thromboxane B2 production in vitro. Cardiovascular disease is associated with the aberrant functioning of the heart and circulatory system; the relatively narrow vessels of the circulation are commonly affected and blocked by atherosclerosis, which may result in angina or heart attack...

METHODS: Clinical (including autonomic), radiological and lab features of 53 MSA patients were analyzed in the context of MSAp (16 patients) and MSAc (37 patients)...

It has been speculated that trace elements may a play role in the pathogenesis of heart diseases. In the present study, we aimed to assess the levels of selenium (Se) and mercury (Hg) in biological samples (whole blood, urine, and scalp hair) of myocardial infarction (MI) patients of both genders (age range 45-60 years) at the first, second, and third heart attack (n = 130), hospitalized in a cardiac ward of a civil hospital of Hyderabad City (Pakistan). The question of obtaining organs from donors who died of methanol poisoning has been discussed in the medical literature for many years. The results of such transplants published so far are very optimistic. However, the possibility of permanent and significant injury to transplanted organs caused by poisons or its metabolites raises serious concerns regarding the procedure. The long-term effects of intensive treatment of poisoning need to be considered as well. Metabolic acidosis and high blood osmolality are agents with recognized damaging potential impairing organ function at cellular level...

BACKGROUND: Predictors of long-term mortality after discharge after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are well characterized. However, these established risk factors are based on data almost exclusively derived from older studies without consistent use of revascularization therapy and adjunctive therapy with statins, platelet inhibitors, beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors/ARBs. We therefore sought to investigate predictors of 1-year mortality in survivors of AMI treated with contemporary guideline-adherent therapy...

The 75 g oral glucose tolerance test showed a decrease in plasma glucose to 56 mg/dl at five hours, but this was not associated with clear hypoglycemic symptoms, and normal plasma glucose level recovered naturally after the test. Oxygen deprivation in nervous tissue depolarizes cell membranes, increasing extracellular potassium concentration ([K(+)](o)). Thus, [K(+)](o) can be used to assess neural failure. The effect of temperature (17, 23 or 29°C) on the maintenance of brain [K(+)](o) homeostasis in male Drosophila melanogaster (w1118) individuals was assessed during repeated anoxic comas induced by N(2) gas. Brain [K(+)](o) was continuously monitored using K(+)-sensitive microelectrodes while body temperature was changed using a thermoelectric cooler (TEC)...
