BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease (KD) is classified as a systemic vasculitis syndrome and QT interval dispersion (QTD) has been associated with cardiac involvement and disease activity in patients with cardiovasculitis. We examined whether baseline QTD could predict a response to intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) in KD.Methods and Results:QTD was recorded in 86 patients with KD before IVIG, who were separated into IVIG responders (R group; n=62) and nonresponders (N group; n=24). The association between baseline QTD and response to IVIG was investigated, and the predictive response value was compared with conventional risk scores from Gunma and Kurume universities...

Salmonella infections can be seen in four clinical types, namely gastroenteritis, bacteremia/sepsis, enteric fever and carriage. These infections can result in uncomplicated diarrhea in most cases, but can lead to invasive disease requiring antimicrobial therapy and can be life-threatening in elderly or immunocomprimised patients. Broad-spectrum cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones are crucial options in the treatment of the invasive infections. Ciprofloxacin resistance is rarely seen in non-typhoid Salmonella enterica isolates, and only in S...

Atherosclerosis is one of the principal causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The recent decades have witnessed great advances both in the identification of risk factors for the development of atherosclerosis and the treatment of its complications. This effort was rewarded with the reduction of mortality rates from cardiovascular diseases. The need for an update of the recommendations for the prevention of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases stems from a large body of recently published trials, leading to fundamental changes in the way we treat patients with various levels of risk...

The natural history of infective endocarditis has undergone remarkable changes over the past 100 years as regards both the demographic characteristics of the disease and changes in the incidence of the so-called diagnostic signs. Alongside these changes and the development of new and better diagnostic tools and criteria, we are also facing new problems with the precise definition of cardiovascular infections and calculation of the incidence of the disease. Nosocomial endocarditis presents an emerging problem of diagnosis and treatment after heart valve surgery, with pace-maker catheters, defibrillators and a very large variety of foreign materials used in connection with heart valve surgery...
