BACKGROUND: Although there is no agreement on a definition of elderly, commonly an age cutoff of ≥65 or 75 years is used. Nowadays most of malignancies requiring surgical treatment are diagnosed in old population. Comorbidities and frailty represent well-known problems during and after surgery in elderly patients. Minimally invasive surgery offers earlier postoperative mobilization, less blood loss, lower morbidity as well as reduction in hospital stay and as such represents an interesting and validated option for elderly population...

BACKGROUND: The treatment of proximal femoral fractures in geriatric osteoporotic patients continues to be a challenge in orthopaedic trauma. Various kinds of cephalomedullary nails, such as gamma nail, InterTan and PFNA were used clinically. The latest generation PFNA II, specially designed for Asian population, is commonly used for geriatric per-/intertrochanteric fractures. The aim of this study was to determine whether the current PFNA-II proximal segment length is suitable for the greater trochanter height, as assessed by postoperative radiograph measurements...

This study was conducted to determine the level and types of participation of social workers in the activities of the Geriatric Education Centers (GECs). Through an online survey of GECs, the level of participation of social work professionals was compared with those in dentistry, nursing, medicine, and pharmacy, during the years 2010 to 2014. Thirty-one percent (14) of the 45 GECs completed the survey. The results found increases in participation for both social workers and nurses for both GEC activities and involvement in leadership positions within the centers...

OBJECTIVE To define a frailty-related phenotype-a clinical syndrome associated with the aging process in humans-in aged dogs and to investigate its association with time to death. ANIMALS 116 aged guide dogs. PROCEDURES Dogs underwent a clinical geriatric assessment (CGA) and were followed to either time of death or the study cutoff date. A 5-component clinical definition of a frailty phenotype was derived from clinical items included in a geriatric health evaluation scoresheet completed by veterinarians during the CGA...

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus on how best to define low muscle mass in patients with end-stage renal disease. Use of muscle mass normalized to height-squared has been suggested by geriatric societies but may underestimate sarcopenia, particularly in the setting of excess adiposity. We compared four definitions of low muscle mass in a prevalent hemodialysis cohort. METHODS: ACTIVE/ADIPOSE enrolled prevalent patients receiving hemodialysis from the San Francisco and Atlanta areas from June 2009 to August 2011...

BACKGROUND: Exercise, nutrition, and psychological interventions may all have positive impacts on frailty and sarcopenia. However, it is not known whether an integrated care programme with all three components can be beneficial and the intensity of such programme is also not certain. In this study, we aim to determine the effectiveness of two levels of integrated care on frailty and sarcopenia. METHODS: A randomized control trial was conducted at two community hospitals in Taiwan...

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is highly prevalent in the elderly, and this population can be exposed to serious complications, including falls and cognitive disorders, as well as overall mortality. However, the pathophysiology of OH is still poorly understood, and innovative methods of cerebral blood flow (CBF) assessment have been required to accurately investigate cerebrovascular reactivity in OH. OBJECTIVES: We want to compare brain tissue pulsatility (BTP) changes during an orthostatic challenge in elderly patients over 80 with and without OH...

Nicaragua is a very low-income country entering a period of rapid aging with limited geriatric training for health care professionals (López & Reyes-Ortiz, 2015). To help build capacity and to enhance student learning, a short-term international service-learning program was implemented in 2004 in partnership with the Jessie F. Richardson Foundation and Nicaraguan community stakeholders. Graduate and undergraduate students at Portland State University complete coursework for one term in the U.S. then travel to Nicaragua for about 2 weeks to participate in educational, research, and service activities, primarily in group homes for older Nicaraguans...
