Monimiaceae comprises approximately 26 genera and 250 species, with a pantropical distribution, predominantly occurring in humid forests. In Brazil, it is represented by five genera and 47 species, most of which are found in the Atlantic Forest, particularly in dense ombrophilous forest. Nevertheless, studies on this family in other biomes and vegetation types in Brazil are still scarce. The Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF), a region located in the state of Minas Gerais, exhibits high plant species richness and endemism...

Groundwater helps overcoming periods of drought buffering their effects on water supply to people, natural ecosystems and the economy. Following the latest Conference of the Parties (COP27), groundwater research gained renewed impulse because the Parties committed themselves to invest on environmental dimensions of water security related with aquifer characterization and protection. In that context, the purpose of this study was to help providing an integrated assessment to some fundamental issues about groundwater security, summarized as the three "how"s: how much, how ready and for how long can groundwater be delivered from watersheds? A complementary goal was to identify and quantify the role of watershed characteristics controlling these "how"s...

Aluminium (Al)-rich palaeosols-i.e., palaeobauxite deposits-should have formed in karst depressions in carbonate sequences as a result of acidic solutions from oxidative weathering of sulfide minerals during the Great Oxidation Event (GOE), but no GOE-related karst-palaeobauxite deposits have so far been recorded. Here, we report results of in situ uranium-lead (U-Pb) dating of detrital zircon and spatially associated rutile from a metamorphosed Al-rich rock within a dolomite sequence in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF) of Minas Gerais, Brazil, known as the Gandarela Formation...

Population aging brings challenges to the health system. Increased degenerative joint diseases and occurrence of falls may require hip arthroplasties. The objective of this study was to evaluate factors associated with hospital deaths due to hip arthroplasties in the Brazilian Unified National Health System (SUS), in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A cross-sectional study was carried out using the Brazilian Hospital Information System of the SUS, considering hospitalizations and deaths from hip arthroplasties that occurred between 2016 to 2018...

This study analyzed the court proceedings, health characteristics of the patients, and plaintiffs' characteristics in lawsuits for hip replacement surgery from public health services in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The data employed was from the Technical Support Center for the Judiciary of the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice (NAT-JUS) database, from January 2016 to December 2018. Data were analyzed according to tiers in the court system. There were 89 lawsuits filed for hip replacement surgery and most of them were tried in the Court of Justice of the State of Rio de Janeiro (TJRJ), with joint plaintiffs, represented by the Public Defender's Office...

While the value of national arthroplasty registries (NAR) for quality improvement in total hip arthroplasty (THA) has already been widely reported, some methodological limitations associated with observational epidemiological studies that may interfere with the assessment of safety and efficacy of prosthetic implants have recently been described in the literature. Among the main limitations of NAR, the need for at least 80% compliance of all health institutions covered by the registry is emphasized; completeness equal or greater than 90% of all THA performed; restricted data collection; use of revision surgery as the sole criterion for outcome; and the inability of establishing a definite causal link with prosthetic dysfunction...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between obesity and levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in patients with heart failure admitted to a tertiary hospital. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with a consecutive sampling of hospitalized patients with heart failure. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected, and the nutritional status was assessed through indicators such as body mass index (in kg/m2), waist circumference (in cm), waist-hip ratio, triceps skinfold (in mm) and subscapularis skinfold (in mm)...

Objective: to ascertain the effectiveness of an intervention program in relation to anthropometric measurements and stage of readiness for behavioral change in women with excess weight. Methods: the intervention group (IG) was made up of 13 women, and the control group (CG), by 20. The intervention lasted 16 weeks, and included the practice of guided physical activity three times a week, and health education once a week. The application of the questionnaire on stage of readiness for behavioral change, and the anthropometric evaluations, were undertaken at two points - before and after the period of intervention...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate endotoxins in sterilized surgical instruments used in hip arthroplasties. METHOD: A descriptive exploratory study conducted in a public teaching hospital. Six types of surgical instruments were selected, namely: acetabulum rasp, femoral rasp, femoral head remover, chisel box, flexible bone reamer and femoral head test. The selection was based on the analysis of the difficulty in removing bone and blood residues during cleaning. The sample was made up of 60 surgical instruments, which were tested for endotoxins in three different stages...

BACKGROUND: Epicardial fat is an upper body visceral fat depot that may play a significant role in the development of adverse metabolic and cardiovascular risk profiles. There is a significant direct relationship between the amount of epicardial fat and general body adiposity (body mass index, BMI), but data regarding subcutaneous adiposity is limited. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a study to determine the association between neck circumference and epicardial fat thickness in healthy young male individuals, and assess their individual correlations with general body adiposity and cardiometabolic risk factors...

The International Atomic Energy Agency promotes the practice of nuclear medicine among its Member States with a focus on quality and safety. It considers quality culture as a part of the educational process and as a tool to reduce heterogeneity in the practice of nuclear medicine, and in turn, patient care. Sensitization about quality is incorporated in all its delivery mechanisms. The Agency has developed a structured peer-review process called quality management (QM) audits in nuclear medicine practices to help nuclear medicine facilities improve their quality through this voluntary comprehensive audit process...
