OBJECTIVES: Currently, a prostate biopsy is guided by transrectal ultrasound (US) alone. However, this biopsy cannot be performed in men without an anus. The aim of this study was to show the outcomes of a new transperineal US (TPUS)-guided biopsy technique in patients who underwent Miles' operation. METHODS: Between April 2009 and March 2022, TPUS-guided biopsy was consecutively conducted in 9 patients (median, 71 years; range, 61-78 years) with high prostate-specific antigen values (22...

BACKGROUND: Data regarding clinical outcomes after intravascular imaging-guided percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for complex coronary-artery lesions, as compared with outcomes after angiography-guided PCI, are limited. METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter, open-label trial in South Korea, we randomly assigned patients with complex coronary-artery lesions in a 2:1 ratio to undergo either intravascular imaging-guided PCI or angiography-guided PCI. In the intravascular imaging group, the choice between intravascular ultrasonography and optical coherence tomography was at the operators' discretion...

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to compare the surgical outcomes of single-port laparoscopic surgery (SPLS) and single-port robotic surgery (SPRS). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent a hysterectomy, ovarian cystectomy, or myomectomy with SPLS or SPRS from January 2020 to July 2022. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS chi-square test and student's t -test. RESULTS: A total of 566 surgeries including single-port laparoscopic hysterectomy (SPLH; n = 148), single-port robotic hysterectomy (SPRH; n = 35), single-port laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy (SPLC; n = 207), single-port robotic ovarian cystectomy (SPRC; n = 108), single-port laparoscopic myomectomy (SPLM; n = 12), and single-port robotic myomectomy (SPRM; n = 56)...

Carcinosarcomas (malignant mixed Mullerian tumors) of a female genital organ are rare tumors associated with a poor survival. The purpose of this study was to identify site-specific differences in the incidence and prognosis in carcinosarcomas originating in the uterus, cervix, or ovary. The data of patients with gynecologic carcinosarcomas were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database between 2000 and 2016. The characteristics of gynecologic carcinosarcomas were compared using Pearson X2 and Fisher's exact tests...

Standard treatments for gynecological cancers include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. However, there are limitations associated with the chemotherapeutic drugs used to treat advanced and recurrent gynecological cancers, and it is difficult to identify additional treatments. Therefore, immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy products, including PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors and CTLA-4 inhibitors, are in the spotlight as alternatives for the treatment of advanced gynecological cancers. Although the ICI monotherapy response rate in gynecological cancers is lower than that in melanoma or non-small cell lung cancer, the response rates are approximately 13-52%, 7-22%, and 4-17% for endometrial, ovarian, and cervical cancers, respectively...

Obesity is a burden to global health. Non-shivering thermogenesis of brown adipose tissue (BAT) and white adipose tissue (WAT) is a novel strategy for obesity treatment. Anmyungambi (AMGB) decoction is a multi-herb decoction with clinical anti-obesity effects. Here, we show the effects of AMGB decoction using high-fat diet (HFD)-fed C57BL6/J mice. All four versions of AMGB decoction (100 mg/kg/day, oral gavage for 28 days) suppressed body weight gain and obesity-related blood parameters in the HFD-fed obese mice...

BACKGROUND: A certain proportion of patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) present with discordant grading between different diagnostic modalities, which raises uncertainty about the true severity of AS. The aim of this study was to compare the aortic valve area (AVA) measured on CT and echocardiography and demonstrate the factors affecting AVA discrepancies. METHODS: Between June 2011 and March 2016, 535 consecutive patients (66.83±8.80 years, 297 men) with AS who underwent pre-operative cardiac CT and echocardiography for aortic valve replacement were retrospectively included...

This study aimed to identify the decisional stages for cervical screening and corresponding cognitive factors in female university students. A cross-sectional study was conducted among Korean female university students aged 20-29 years through an online survey. The main outcome was the decisional stage of cervical screening adoption using the precaution adoption process model. The stages were classified into pre-adoption (the unawareness, unengaged, and undecided stages), adoption (the decided to act and acting stages), and refusal (the decided not to act stage)...

OBJECTIVE: Heritability of stroke is assumed not to be low, especially in the young stroke population. However, most genetic studies have been performed in highly selected patients with typical clinical or neuroimaging characteristics. We investigated the prevalence of 15 Mendelian stroke genes and explored the relationships between variants and the clinical and neuroimaging characteristics in a large, unselected, young stroke population. METHODS: We enrolled patients aged ≤55 years with stroke or transient ischemic attack from a prospective, nationwide, multicenter stroke registry...

BACKGROUND: There has been no comparison of the determinants of admission route between acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We examined whether factors associated with direct versus transferred-in admission to regional cardiocerebrovascular centers (RCVCs) differed between AIS and AMI. METHODS: Using a nationwide RCVC registry, we identified consecutive patients presenting with AMI and AIS between July 2016 and December 2018. We explored factors associated with direct admission to RCVCs in patients with AIS and AMI and examined whether those associations differed between AIS and AMI, including interaction terms between each factor and disease type in multivariable models...
