OBJECTIVE: Increasing reports of resistance to newer anti-tuberculosis drugs have prompted the search for other alternative drugs. Streptomycin could be used for the treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis if susceptibility of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolate to streptomycin could be accurately detected. We performed phenotypic and genotypic drug susceptibility testing (DST) of 118 M. tuberculosis isolates for streptomycin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty pansusceptible and 68 multidrug-resistant M...

Drug resistance among Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) strains is a growing concern in developing countries. We conducted a comprehensive search for relevant studies in Iran on PubMed, Scopus, and Embase until June 12, 2020. Our study focused on determining the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in MTB isolates, with subgroup analyses based on year, location, and drug susceptibility testing (DST) methods. Statistical analyses were performed using STATA software. Our meta-analysis included a total of 47 articles...

BACKGROUND: Multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) has attracted increasing attention in achieving the global goal of tuberculosis (TB) control. China has the second largest TB burden worldwide and has been experiencing large-scale domestic migration. This study aims to explore the effect of migrants on non-adherence to MDR-TB treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in Wuhan, China. The exposure cases were migrants who were not locally registered in the residence registration system...

BACKGROUND: The emergence of Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (DR-TB) is one of the main public health and economic problems facing the world today. DR-TB affects mostly those in economically productive years and prevents them from being part of the workforce needed for economic growth. The aim of this study was to determine the Clinical Profile and Outcomes of DR-TB in Central Province of Zambia. METHODS: This was a retrospective cross sectional study that involved a review of records of patients with confirmed DR-TB who were managed at Kabwe Central Hospital's Multi-Drug Resistant TB (MDR-TB) Ward from the year 2017 to 2021...

Cases of active tuberculosis (TB) in the U.S. Military have fallen over the last century in large part due to improved screening and treatment options. The subset of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) is almost nonexistent within the U.S. Military. We present a case of MDR-TB in an active duty U.S. Military health care worker and discuss several considerations for treatment that may present challenges for U.S. Military medical practitioners. A 30-year-old active duty Soldier was referred to Army public health services after a bronchoscopy sample was positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex...

INTRODUCTION: Inappropriate treatment and non-adherence use of anti-tuberculosis (TB) drugs trigger the spread of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) strains and causes an emerging public health threat worldwide. Therefore, non-adherence to MDR-TB treatment leading to prolonged medication period, increase incidence of adverse event and financial burden, thus it requires interventions to achieve a therapeutic outcome. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to provide an overview of interventions to improve the adherence level to medication of MDR-TB patients...

Tuberculosis (TB) is a highly prevalent infectious disease that causes more than 1.5 million deaths a year. More than 25% of TB deaths occur in Africa, and TB is South Africa's leading cause of death, with about 89,000 people dying of it yearly. The emergence of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) poses a significant threat to health security and could reverse the positive gains already made in the fight against TB. Antibiotic treatments are available, but side effects and the alarming increase in the prevalence of drug-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis ( Mtb ) will compromise the control of the spread and treatment of the disease...

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB), an infectious disease that is a major killer worldwide. Due to selection pressure caused by the use of antibacterial drugs, Mtb is characterised by mutational events that have given rise to multi drug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug resistant (XDR) phenotypes. The rate at which mutations occur is an important factor in the study of molecular evolution, and it helps understand gene evolution. Within the same species, different protein-coding genes evolve at different rates...

BACKGROUND: Multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) represents a major public health concern in the Republic of Moldova, with an estimated 31% of new and 56% of previously treated TB cases having MDR disease in 2022. A recent genomic epidemiology study of incident TB occurring in 2018 and 2019 found that 92% of MDR-TB was the result of transmission. The MDR phenotype was concentrated among two M. tuberculosis (Mtb) lineages: L2.2.1 (Beijing) and L4.2.1 (Ural). METHODS: We developed and applied a hierarchical Bayesian multinominal logistic regression model to Mtb genomic, spatial, and epidemiological data collected from all individuals with diagnosed TB in Moldova in 2018 and 2019 to identify locations in which specific Mtb strains are being transmitted...

Tuberculosis (TB) remains the foremost cause of death by an infectious disease globally. Multidrug-resistant or rifampicin-resistant TB (MDR/RR-TB; resistance to rifampicin and isoniazid, or rifampicin alone) is a burgeoning public health challenge in several parts of the world, and especially Eastern Europe, Russia, Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Pre-extensively drug-resistant TB (pre-XDR-TB) refers to MDR/RR-TB that is also resistant to a fluoroquinolone, and extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) isolates are additionally resistant to other key drugs such as bedaquiline and/or linezolid...

Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious health issue that contributes to millions of deaths throughout the world and increases the threat of serious pulmonary infections in patients with respiratory illness. Delamanid is a novel drug approved in 2014 to deal with multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB). Despite its high efficiency in TB treatment, delamanid poses delivery challenges due to poor water solubility leading to inadequate absorption upon oral administration. This study involves the development of novel formulation-based pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDIs) containing self-microemulsifying mixtures of delamanid for efficient delivery to the lungs...

Approximately five million Ukrainians were displaced to the EU/EEA following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. While tuberculosis (TB) notification rates per 100,000 Ukrainians in the EU/EEA remained stable, the number of notified TB cases in Ukrainians increased almost fourfold (mean 2019-2021: 201; 2022: 780). In 2022, 71% cases were notified in three countries, and almost 20% of drug-resistant TB cases were of Ukrainian origin.
