BACKGROUND: In Italy, nephrology residency is available in twenty-one nephrology schools, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. The present study is aimed at exploring the residents' satisfaction with their training programs. METHODS: Between April 20th and May 19th, 2021, a questionnaire on residency satisfaction consisting of 49 items was sent to 586 residents and 175 recently certified specialists (qualified to practice as nephrologists in 2019 and 2020), with a response rate of 81% and 51%, respectively...

Fifty-five years of radiocarbon variation studies are reviewed with an emphasis on a better understanding of the impacts of the Bohunice nuclear power plant and fossil fuel CO2 on the atmosphere and biosphere of Slovakia. The maximum Δ14 C levels in the air up to about 1200‰ were observed during the 1970s at the Žlkovce monitoring station, which after 2005 decreased to <30‰. A relative decrease in the atmospheric Δ14 C levels due to increasing levels of fossil CO2 in the atmosphere has also been significant, for example, in Bratislava down to about -330‰, but after 2005 they were only <50‰ below the Jungfraujoch European clean-air level...

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is the most frequent primary glomerulonephritis and the role of IL-6 in pathogenesis is becoming increasingly important. A recent whole genome DNA methylation screening in IgAN patients identified a hypermethylated region comprising the non-coding RNA Vault RNA 2-1 (VTRNA2-1) that could explain the high IL-6 levels. METHODS: The pathway leading to IL-6 secretion controlled by VTRNA2-1, PKR, and CREB was analyzed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) isolated from healthy subjects (HS), IgAN patients, transplanted patients with or without IgAN...

In recent years, the "Escape-from-Flatland" trend has prompted the synthetic community to develop a set of cross-coupling strategies to introduce sp3 -carbon-based fragments in organic compounds. This study presents a novel nickel-catalyzed electrochemical methodology for reductive cross-electrophile coupling. The method enables C(sp2 )-C(sp3 ) linkages using inexpensive amine-derived radical precursors and aryl iodides. The use of electrochemistry as a power source reduces waste and avoids chemical reductants, making this approach a more sustainable alternative to traditional cross-coupling methods...

Efficient catalytic methods for the trifluoromethylation of (hetero)arenes are of particular importance in organic and pharmaceutical manufacturing. However, many existing protocols rely on toxic reagents and expensive or sterically hindered homogeneous catalysts. One promising alternative to conduct this transformation involves the use of carbon nitride, a non-toxic photocatalyst prepared from inexpensive precursors. Nonetheless, there is still little understanding regarding the interplay between physicochemical features of this photocatalyst and the corresponding effects on the reaction rate...

A new advanced dual-phase (DP) steel characterized by ferrite and bainite presence in equal fractions has been studied within this paper. The anisotropy change of this steel was assessed as a progressively more severe cold rolling process was introduced. Specifically, tensile tests were used to build a strain-hardening curve, which describes the evolution of this DP steel's mechanical properties as the thinning level increases from 20 to 70% with 10% step increments. As expected, the cold rolling process increases mechanical properties, profoundly altering the material's microstructure, which was assessed in depth using Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) analysis coupled with the Kernel Average Misorientation (KAM) maps...

The development of efficient catalysts is a highly necessary but challenging task within the field of environmental water remediation. Single-atom catalysts are promising nanomaterials within this respect, but in-depth studies encompassing this class of catalysts remain elusive. In this work, we systematically study the degradation of gemfibrozil, a persistent pollutant, on a series of carbon nitride photocatalysts, investigating both the effect of (i) catalyst textural properties and (ii) metal single atoms on the contaminant degradation...

PURPOSE: Preliminary data suggest that patients with Dravet Syndrome (DS) have a reduced heart rate variability (HRV). This seems particularly evident in patients who experienced sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). This study aims at confirming these findings in a larger cohort and at defining clinical, genetic or electroencephalographic predictors of HRV impairment in DS patients. METHODS: DS patients followed at our Institution performed a 24h-ECG Holter to derive HRV parameters...

The automotive field is continuously researching safer, high-strength, ductile materials. Nowadays, dual-phase (DP) steels are gaining importance, since they meet all these requirements. Dual-phase steel made of ferrite and bainite is the object of a complete microstructural and mechanical characterization, which includes tensile and bending tests. This specific steel contains ferrite and bainite in equal parts; ferrite is the soft phase while bainite acts as a dispersed reinforcing system. This peculiar microstructure, together with fine dispersed carbides, an extremely low carbon content (0...

The production of dense samples produced by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is mainly determined by the choice of the best combination of construction parameters. Parameter optimization is the first step in the definition of an LPBF process for new alloys or systems. With this goal, much research uses the single scan track (SST) approach for a preliminary parameter screening. This study investigates the definition of a computer-aided method by using an automatic on top analysis for the characterization of SSTs, with the aim of finding ranges of laser power and scan speed values for massive production...

Enzyme I (EI) of the bacterial phosphotransferase system (PTS) is a master regulator of bacterial metabolism and a promising target for development of a new class of broad-spectrum antibiotics. The catalytic activity of EI is mediated by several intradomain, interdomain, and intersubunit conformational equilibria. Therefore, in addition to its relevance as a drug target, EI is also a good model for investigating the dynamics/function relationship in multidomain, oligomeric proteins. Here, we use solution NMR and protein design to investigate how the conformational dynamics occurring within the N-terminal domain (EIN) affect the activity of EI...

A straightforward flow synthesis of α-chloro aldehydes has been developed. The strategy involves, for the first time, the thermal unstable chloroiodomethyllithium carbenoid and carbonyl compounds. A batch versus flow comparative study showcases the superb capability of flow technology in prolonging the lifetime of the lithiated carbenoid, even at -20 °C. Remarkably, the high chemoselectivity realized in flow allowed for preparing polyfunctionalized α-chloro aldehydes not easily accessible with traditional batch procedures...

BACKGROUND: Hyperekplexia also known as Startle disease is a rare neuromotor hereditary disorder characterized by exaggerated startle responses to unexpected auditory, tactile, and visual stimuli and generalized muscle stiffness, which both gradually subside during the first months of life. Although the diagnosis of Hyperekplexia is based on clinical findings, pathogenic variants in five genes have been reported to cause Hyperekplexia, of which GLRA1 accounts for about 80% of cases. Dominant and recessive mutations have been identified in GLRA1 gene as pathogenic variants in many individuals with the familial form of Hyperekplexia and occasionally in simplex cases...

Zinc ion binding is a principal event in the achievement of the correct fold in classical zinc finger domains since the motif is largely unfolded in the absence of metal. In the case of a prokaryotic zinc finger, the larger βββαα domain contributes to the folding mechanism with a larger hydrophobic core. For these reasons, following the great amount of attention devoted to unveiling the effect of xenobiotic metal ion replacement in zinc fingers and in zinc-containing proteins in general, the prokaryotic zinc finger domain appears to be an interesting model for studying metal ion interaction with metalloproteins...
