BACKGROUND: Freestanding emergency departments (FSEDs) are fast growing entities in health care, delivering emergency care outside of hospitals. Hospitals may benefit in several ways by opening FSEDs. PURPOSE: The study used the resource dependence theory as a means to analyze the relationship between market and organizational factors and the likelihood of hospitals to operate FSEDs. METHODOLOGY: All acute care hospitals in 14 states with FSEDs present during the study period from 2002 to 2011...

A forescatter electron detector (FSED) was used to acquire dark-field micrographs (DF-FSED) on thin specimens with a scanning electron microscope. The collection angles were adjusted with the detector distance from the beam axis, which is similar to the camera length of the scanning transmission electron microscope annular DF detectors. The DF-FSED imaging resolution was calculated with SMART-J on an aluminum alloy and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) decorated with platinum nanoparticles. The resolution was three to six times worse than with bright-field imaging...

BACKGROUND: Freestanding Emergency Departments (FSEDs) have emerged as an alternative to traditional hospital-based emergency care. STUDY OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the number, basic types, distribution, and characteristics of United States (US) FSEDs in 2007. METHODS: Combining data from the 2007 National Emergency Department Inventory-USA database, the 2007 American Hospital Association Annual Survey of Hospitals, Internet searches, and telephone calls, we established an inventory of FSEDs...

PURPOSE: The pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is still under debate. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a long-term fat- and sugar-enriched diet (FSED) and chronic stress (CS) on NAFLD. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were fed on either a standard diet or a FSED and given CS, a random electric foot shock (2 hr/morning and afternoon per day), or not for 12 weeks. After the experimental period, epididymal adipose tissue weight, sign of visceral obesity (VO), and hepatic index (HI) were measured...

This study focuses on eugenics in Spain, and more specifically on the 'official' eugenics whose platform was the Primeras Jornadas Eugénicas Españolas (First Spanish Eugenic Days, FSED). The aim of this paper is to relate eugenics to 'governmentality' rather than to State politics alone and to 'Latin eugenics' rather than to 'mainline eugenics'. On the one hand, the FSED were largely centred on the development of a new sexual code which would set Catholic sexual morality aside. For this reason, sexual pedagogy was one of the most relevant topics during the FSED, personal responsibility becoming the first step to social change...

Ascorbic acid (ASC) has been shown to radioprotect nonmalignant tissue and to enhance the effects of misonidazole (MISO) on hypoxic cells in vitro. Since ASC is minimally toxic, it is an interesting candidate for improving the radiotherapeutic gain factor in vivo. The in vivo radiomodifying effects of ASC on a C3H/fSed murine fibrosarcoma (FSaII), on normal skin, and on bone marrow were determined with the use of the tumor growth delay and TCD50 (i.e., radiation dose required to control 50% of treated tumors for a minimum of 120 days) assays and the RD50 (i...

The biological activities of two thymic factors, serum thymic factor thymulin normally present in serum and thymosin alpha-1 (Ta-1) extracted from the thymus gland, have been studied. The effects of the factors on the growth of pulmonary metastases and survival of mice were evaluated in pathogen-free C3H/fSed males. Mice were injected i.v. with the single cell suspension of the syngeneic methylcholanthrene-induced fibrosarcoma. The treatment with thymulin and Ta-1 started two days after injection of 5 x 10(4) to 2 x 10(5) tumor cells per mouse...
