Osseous defects and fractures may require supplimentation to support and promote healing. Bioglass (BG) may be a useful therapeutic for these conditions. Therefore, we executed a study to determine whether particulate BG could promote healing of 20-mm unilateral ostectomies in the radius of rabbits. Ostectomies were either treated with BG or remained untreated in the control (CTL) group. At 4 and 8 weeks post-treatment, ostectomies were assessed histomorphometrically and biomechanically. New bone formation was more intense contiguous to the host bone for both BG and CTL than centrally, yet BG animals displayed active mineralization throughout the ostectomy...

The advantages of clinical and mechanical combination of observations for prediction are mutually reinforced by an application of Bayesian statistics. The technique is shown to be particularly advantageous in a situation which is characterized by a paucity of observations available to suppliment a prior expert judgment. The approach also presents a basis for evaluating relative expertise and tracing the learning experience of experts. Taking the community as the organizational level of analysis, data on the classification of aged persons in Durham County, North Carolina, and data on the changes in classification of these individuals within the population over time are gathered and studied...

Twenty-one cases of pulmonary tuberculosis seen in the last two years in the chest clinic of the University College Hospital, Ibadan were studied for their haematological patterns at diagnosis and three months after. One group was put on anti-tuberculosis drugs only while the other group was put on anti-tuberculosis drugs and oral iron. The haematological results after 3 months show a significant rise in packed cell volume (PCV) less than 0.01 in the group given oral suppliments. Megaloblastic bone marrow changes occurred in 20 per cent of the patients after 3 months...
