Compression of the radial nerve at the elbow is quite rare; entrapment of its superficial branch is exceptional. Extrinsic compression is the most frequent etiology. Magnetic resonance imaging plays a major role in the diagnosis, and early surgical excision or echoguided drainage - in case of synovial ganglion - allows a total recovery. The authors report the case of a compression of the superficial branch of radial nerve by an elbow synovial cyst treated by surgical resection.

The introduction of the percutaneous puncture, aspiration, injection of scolecidal agent and reaspiration (PAIR) technique is gaining an increasing acceptance in diagnosis and treatment of abdominal cystic hydatid disease (CHD). Thirty-three patients (12 male & 21 female with age between 15 and 70 years) had 46 cysts in liver, spleen and kidneys (75.7%, 18.2% & 6.1% respectively). Puncture, aspiration, injection of 95% sterile alcohol for 20 minutes and reaspiration (PAIR) was used for treatment of hydatid cysts of different types and sizes...

Surgical treatment of mitral stenosis (MS) usually consists of open mitral commissurotomy (MC) or percutaneous balloon MC, which require a cardiopulmonary bypass or transseptal approach, respectively. We describe here the first surgical management of congenital MS in a dog using a less invasive procedure, a surgical closed MC under direct echo guidance. A 5-year-old female Cairn terrier was referred for ascites, weakness, and marked exercise intolerance for 2 months, which was refractory to medical treatment...

The performance of percutaneous echoguided biopsy in hepatic tumor diagnosis is limited by several factors, among which tumor characteristics such as tumor type, size and location play an important role. With all the advantages offered by ultrasound guidance, the overall sensitivity of this method in the tumor diagnosis has remained around 90%. Contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) guided percutaneous biopsy is a new developed technique aimed at increasing the accuracy of percutaneous biopsies. With new ultrasound devices comprising the split-screen mode, which displays both the CEUS and background B-mode US image simultaneously on a single monitor, the procedure is now technically feasible...

There have been main changes in the methods for the work-up of lung cancer over the last 15 years. Guidelines of the main scientific societies are reviewed. The new methods are discussed: brain nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), positron emission tomography (PET scan), mediastinal nodes biopsy by echoguided endoscopy. These new techniques will change the classical approach as recommended by ATS/ERS.

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the pancreas is a rare tumor. We report a case of a 49 years old patient with a metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the pancreas. Histological diagnosis was established by echoguided biopsy of the liver. Due to that, we cannot be sure that this tumor was not adenosquamous with a metastatic component from only the squamous part of the lesion. Two types of chemotherapy have been performed. The first one was radiochemotherapy with an association of 5FU and cisplatinum. Gemcitabin was the second one...

OBJECTIVES: In chronic prostatitis there are many causes that may provoke a therapeutical failure of a systemic antibiotic treatment. At the moment a consensus has not been reached on the efficacy of the many therapeutical options that are available with not one of these approaches being efficacious in all patients. In our view the main causes of treatment failure are the well-known hurdle to antibiotic diffusion inside the glandular parenchyma associated with the so-called intraprostatic bacterial biofilms and the possible presence of local auto-immune reactions...

Currently, resective hepatic surgery should be considered an echoguided surgical procedure to guarantee conservative but radical resections. A simple and original technique guided by intraoperative ultrasonography, termed the "hooking technique," had been described previously. It enables the ligation sites of the intrahepatic vessels during systematic segmentectomy to be chosen precisely. This report describes a further application of this technique to allow safe ligation of portal vein main branches invaded by tumor thrombi during major hepatectomies...

Biliary drainage is a well-accepted procedure for decompression of bile ducts or drainage of infected bile. Percutaneous biliary drainage (PBD) can be performed under fluoroscopic, combined fluoroscopic-US or pure US guidance. The indications of PBD are not well established being closely related to the possibility of an endoscopic stenting. Generally, PBD is indicated in malignant obstructive jaundice especially if accompanied by cholangitis. The main contraindications of percutaneous biliary drainage are bleeding disorders, ascites and rupture of an echinococcus cyst...

The incidence of prostate cancer is remarkably increased in the last decade. This dramatic epidemiological change can be primarily attributed to the widespread use of prostate specific antigen (PSA) as a diagnostic tool. Nowadays most of the prostate cancers are detected at an early stage and the age of the patients is decreased. This has led to a significantly increase in the number of prostate cancer patients treated by radical prostatectomy. Serum determination of PSA is the standard method to monitor the disease after radical surgery, while other tests can be required only when PSA is detectable...

The Authors evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of echography in hepatic echinococcosis, particularly in the completely liquid types of cysts without septa or hydatid sand and in the solidified forms where the differential diagnosis with other hepatic pathologies can be difficult. The study was carried out with a 7.5 MHz probe and the results were compared with those from the use of a 3.5 MHz probe and from CT, serology for hydatidosis and echoguided sampling. Seventy one patients, 36 with liquid hepatic lesions and 35 with solid hepatic lesions (31 hydatid and 40 non-parasitic), were evaluated echographically, first with a 3...
