Ischemia-reperfusion injury is the major manifestation of ischemic heart disease, which facilitates cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure and death. Oxidative stress and apoptosis have been involved in the pathogenesis of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. Modern pharmacological studies have indicated that the extracts and active compounds of Cortex Dictamni exhibit antioxidative and cardiovascular protective activities. This study was designed to investigate the protective effect of aqueous extract of Cortex Dictamni (CDAE) on regulating hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R)-induced cardiomyocytes oxidative stress and apoptosis...

A novel and efficient organic amine and organosolv synergetic pretreatment method was developed to overcome the recalcitrance of lignocellulose to produce fermentable sugars and high-quality salt-free lignin. After optimization of the process parameters, a delignification of 81.7% and total sugar yield of 83.2% (87.1% glucose, 75.4% xylose) could be obtained using n-propylamine (10mmol/g, biomass) as a catalyst and aqueous ethanol (60%, v/v) as a solvent. The susceptibility of the substrates to enzymatic digestibility was explained by their physical and chemical characteristics...

Non-productive enzyme binding onto lignin is the major inhibitory mechanism, which reduces hydrolysis rates and yields and prevents efficient enzyme recycling in the hydrolysis of lignocellulosics. The detailed mechanisms of binding are still poorly understood. Enzyme-lignin interactions were investigated by comparing the structural properties and binding behaviour of fungal monocomponent enzymes, cellobiohydrolases TrCel7A and TrCel6A, endoglucanases TrCel7B and TrCel5A, a xylanase TrXyn11 and a β-glucosidase AnCel3A, onto lignins isolated from steam pretreated spruce and wheat straw...

The bioethanol fermentation of pretreated corncob was investigated using Spathaspora passalidarum U1-58, which simultaneously utilizes glucose and xylose for high-efficiency ethanol production. Two approaches, namely, separate hydrolysis and co-fermentation (SHCF) and simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation (SSCF), were optimized to test the ethanol fermentation potential of U1-58. The highest ethanol titer of 42.46g/L and yield of 72.12% were acquired in SHCF, whereas 53.24g/L ethanol and yield of 75...

This paper is mainly a review of the author's previous research, which was aimed at establishing a theoretical protocol for the design and operation of flocculators based on data from experiments and simulations of the flocculation process. Flocculation is the main pretreatment process of the rapid sand filtration system, and the process produces settleable flocs in the sedimentation basin, reducing the solid load flowing to the sand filter. We tried to make the transition from empirical to theoretical approaches in the design and operation of flocculators by combining the three categories of flocculation research: floc characteristics, flocculation kinetics, and engineering aspects of flocculation...

Apoptosis plays a role in the process of tissue damage after myocardial infarction (MI). This study was designed to investigate the possible effect of cerebrolysin against apoptosis triggered by oxidative cell stress in myocardial ischemia induced by isoproterenol in rat. Rats were pretreated with cerebrolysin 5 mL/kg intraperitoneally for 7 days and intoxicated with isoproterenol (ISO, 85 mg/kg, sc) on the last 2 days. Hearts were excised and stained to detect the infarction size. Serum levels of cardiotoxicity indices as creatine kinase isoenzyme (CK-MB) and troponin I (cTnI) as well as the cardiac oxidative stress parameters as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and superoxide dismutase were estimated...

Homocysteine (Hcy)-triggered endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-mediated endothelial cell apoptosis has been suggested as a cause of Hcy-dependent vascular injury. However, whether ER stress is the molecular mechanism linking Hcy and cardiomyocytes death is unclear. Taurine has been reported to exert cardioprotective effects via various mechanisms. However, whether taurine protects against Hcy-induced cardiomyocyte death by attenuating ER stress is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the opposite effects of taurine on Hcy-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis and their underlying mechanisms...

RATIONALE: The negative affective state, e.g., anhedonia, emerges after abstinence from abused drugs may be linked to the motivational processes of drug craving and relapse. Although anhedonia diminishes over time with drug abstinence, it is not yet rather explicit whether anhedonia exists or not following protracted withdrawal. OBJECTIVES: The behavioral responses to natural rewards were examined after 2 to 3 weeks withdrawal from morphine. Male rats were pretreated with either a binge-like morphine paradigm or daily saline injection for 5 days...

Intracerebroventricular injection of NPS reduces the duration of the ketamine- or thiopental-induced loss of the righting reflex in rats. But the specific EEG activities are unknown. We therefore sought to examine the effects of the NPS-NPSR system on anesthetic-induced characteristics of EEG power spectra and sleep-wake profiles. NPS alone or together with an NPSR antagonist was injected intracerebroventricularly, whereas the propofol (50mg/kg) or ketamine (100mg/kg) was administrated intraperitoneally. NPS (1 or 2nmol) significantly reduced the amount of propofol-induced EEG delta activity and slow wave states (SWS)...

Delineation of lung tumor regions from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) poses many difficulties due to MR signal similarities of the region of interest and surrounding area as well as the influence of respiration. However, accurate segmentation of the tumor region is of utmost importance in planning a radiation therapy since a small error can result in some healthy tissues to receive excessive radiation. This study presents a semi-automated method to delineate lung tumor regions from a sequence of MRIs. The proposed method uses a non-rigid image registration framework to propagate the boundaries of the tumor region in MRI acquired during a radiation treatment stage, given manual segmentation on frames acquired during pretreatment stage...

As a low energy and chemical free process, gravity-driven membrane (GDM) filtration has shown a potential for seawater pretreatment in our previous studies. In this study, a pilot submerged GDM reactor (effective volume of 720 L) was operated over 250 days and the permeate flux stabilized at 18.6 ± 1.4 L/m(2)h at a hydrostatic pressure of 40 mbar. This flux was higher than those in the lab-scale GDM reactor (16.3 ± 0.2 L/m(2)h; effective volume of 8.4 L) and in the filtration cell system (2.7 ± 0...

Reclaimed water (i.e., reused advanced-treated wastewater) offers an alternative water resource. To reduce the health risks associated with its use, efficient virus removal such as with advanced wastewater treatment processes is important. Virus removal by coagulation followed by ultrafiltration (UF) for the treatment of drinking water has been well examined. But its efficacy in wastewater reclamation purpose using secondary treated effluent (SE) from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) as feed water is unclear...

Recent reports have uncovered the multifunctional role of melatonin in plant physiological responses under optimal and sub-optimal environmental conditions. In this study, we explored whether melatonin pretreatment could provoke priming effects in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) plants subsequently exposed to prolonged drought stress (7 days), by withholding watering. Results revealed that the rhizospheric application of melatonin (10 μM) remarkably enhanced the drought tolerance of alfalfa plants, as evidenced by the observed plant tolerant phenotype, as well as by the higher levels of chlorophyll fluorescence and stomatal conductance, compared with non-treated drought-stressed plants...

In China, excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers in greenhouses leads to nitrate accumulations in soil and plants, which then limits productivity. Melatonin, an evolutionarily highly conserved molecule, has a wide range of functions in plants. We analyzed the effects of melatonin pretreatment on the growth, mineral nutrition, and nitrogen metabolism in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. 'Jin You No. 1') when seedlings were exposed to nitrate stress. An application of 0.1 mM melatonin significantly improved the growth of plants and reduced their susceptibility to damage due to high nitrate levels (0...

The mediation of apoptosis-related protein in the TGF-β signaling pathway (ARTS) and X-liked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP) by parkin plays a critical role in preventing Parkinson's disease. We studied whether carnosic acid (CA) could prevent 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced apoptosis by modulating ARTS and XIAP through parkin in SH-SY5Y cells. In cells treated with 6-OHDA, the protein expression of ARTS is increased and XIAP is decreased. Pretreatment of cells with CA reversed these effects. Moreover, CA attenuated the activation of caspase 9 and caspase 7 by 6-OHDA...
