Introduction: To the best of our knowledge, no previous study regarding the serum telomerase levels in Maras powder users (MPUs) has been founded. The aim of the current study was to investigate serum telomerase levels in smokers and MPUs. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out with 98 patients (36 MPUs, 32 smokers and 30 non-smokers). Blood samples were collected, and after having measured the serum telomerase and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels of the patients, comparison were made between the groups...

Targeted delivery of therapeutics and diagnostics using nanotechnology holds great promise to minimize the side effects of conventional chemotherapy and enable specific and real-time detection of diseases. To realize this goal, we report a clickable and imageable nanovehicle assembled from multiblock polyurethanes (MPUs). The soft segments of the polymers are based on detachable poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and degradable poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), and the hard segments are constructed from lysine- and cystine-derivatives bearing reduction-responsive disulfide linkages and click-active alkynyl moieties, allowing for post-conjugation of targeting ligands via a click chemistry...

OBJECTIVE: One of the spearheads of psychiatric healthcare in the Netherlands is hospital care for patients with a psychiatric comorbidity. In 2014, the Netherlands Psychiatric Association published ten field standards for Medical Psychiatric Units (MPUs). We catalogued healthcare in the Netherlands on the basis of these field standards. DESIGN: Telephone screening, followed by a questionnaire investigation. METHOD: In the period May-August 2015, psychiatrists in 90 hospitals in the Netherlands were approached by telephone with 4 screening questions...

Prostate focal therapy offers men the opportunity to achieve oncological control while preserving sexual and urinary function. The prerequisites for successful focal therapy are to accurately identify, localize and completely ablate the clinically significant cancer(s) within the prostate. We aim to evaluate the evidence for current and upcoming technologies that could shape the future of prostate cancer focal therapy in the next five years. Areas covered: Current literature on advances in patient selection using imaging, biopsy and biomarkers, ablation techniques and adjuvant treatments for focal therapy are summarized...

OBJECTIVES: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common form of cancer among men in the US and the second most common cause of death. It has been observed that an increasing number of newly diagnosed patients exhibit low-risk features and that over-treatment with radical prostatectomy is a growing problem. The feasibility of focal therapy as an organsparing alternative, however, depends on the reliability of imaging techniques to identify, localize and monitor clinically relevant PCa lesions...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of (18)F-flurodeoxiglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ((18)F-FDG-PET/CT) in predicting malignancy of thyroid nodules with indeterminate cytology. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analysed 87 patients who have been scheduled to undergo surgery for thyroid nodule with indeterminate cytology. All patients underwent (18)F-FDG-PET/CT, multiparametric neck ultrasonography (MPUS), and (99m)Tc-methoxyisobutylisonitrile scintigraphy ((99m)Tc-MIBI-scan)...

One factor contributing to the high uncertainty in radiation risk assessment for long-term space missions is the insufficient knowledge about possible interactions of radiation with other spaceflight environmental factors. Such factors, e.g. microgravity, have to be considered as possibly additive or even synergistic factors in cancerogenesis. Regarding the effects of microgravity on signal transduction, it cannot be excluded that microgravity alters the cellular response to cosmic radiation, which comprises a complex network of signaling pathways...

OBJECTIVE: To analyze whether magnetic resonance imaging-ultrasonography (MRI-US) fusion-guided biopsy detects more and clinical significant prostate cancer (PCa) in comparison to conventional transrectal US-guided prostate biopsy (PBX) and to investigate if multiparametric (mp) US during MRI-US fusion can further characterize mpMRI-suspected lesions according to the prostate MRI reporting and data system (PI-RADS). METHODS: From January 2012 to January 2014, 169 patients with a median of 2 negative conventional PBX and/or initially or consistently elevated prostate-specific antigen levels were prospectively included and underwent 3 T mpMRI...

PURPOSE: To investigate the advances and clinical results of the different ultrasound modalities and the progress in combining them into multiparametric UltraSound (mpUS). METHODS: A systematic literature search on mpUS and the different ultrasound modalities included: greyscale ultrasound, computerized transrectal ultrasound, Doppler and power Doppler techniques, dynamic contrast-enhanced ultrasound and (shear wave) elastography. RESULTS: Limited research available on combining ultrasound modalities has presented improvement in diagnostic performance...

Maraş powder (MP), a different type of smokeless tobacco (ST) and prepared from a tobacco of species Nicotiana rustica Linn, is widely used in Turkey. We aimed to investigate the effects of MP on salivary total sialic acid (TSA) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and to compare these parameters in smokers and MP users (MPUs). The salivary TSA and MDA concentrations were significantly higher in the smokers and MPU than those of control subjects and also in MPU than that of smokers. We have also observed that as the number of cigarettes consumed and MP amount increases, TSA and MDA levels increase too...

OBJECTIVE: Although there is a suggestion that the medical psychiatric unit (MPU) may reduce length of hospital stay (LOS), little is known about costs in terms of medical service use and psychiatric interventions in MPU care. METHOD: A record linkage study was conducted, linking cost data of hospital medical service use, LOS, and hospital psychiatric interventions to patients admitted to the MPU of the Maastricht University Medical Centre (MUMC) between 1998 and 2004...

A series of segmented multiblock polyurethanes (MPUs) were synthesized by polyaddition reaction using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO, as a hydrophilic component)/ poly(tetramethylene oxide) (PTMO)/ poly(butadiene diol)(PBD)/1,4-butanediol(BD)/(2-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl) methyl ammonio]ethyl stearyl phosphate)[BESP, as a phospholipids component: 0-42 mol% (0-9 wt%)]. To improve the blood compatibility of biomedical grade polyurethane (Pellethene), the Pellethene was blended with MPUs and then crosslinked using dicumyl peroxide as a crosslinking agent...

A method is described for sampling and averaging individual motor unit potentials (MUPs), which is based on an averaging technique using a special EMG electrode. The needle has two separate electrode surfaces, a conventional coaxial electrode at the tip and a single-fiber electrode opposite the bevel of the tip. With this method it is possible to extract individual MUPs even from interference activity during a moderate or even high muscular effort. The averaging of MPUs gives a good signal-to-noise ratio, which makes the quantification of MPUs precise...
