Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a very common condition and its prevalence is increasing worldwide. The CARHES study in Italy showed a prevalence of 6.5% in women and 7.5% in men. As a matter of fact, an early diagnosis is essential to slow down the progression and improve the renal and cardiovascular prognosis. For this purpose the A.N.Di.P. association (National Association of Peritoneal Dialysis-Onlus "Enzo Siciliano ") organized the DAY OF PREVENTION OF RENAL DISEASES which was held in AMATRICE the 15th of July 2017 called "WE START A NEW PATH OF LIFE TOGETHER"...

Background: The overall risk of some cancers is increased in patients receiving regular dialysis treatment due to chronic oxidative stress, a weakened immune system and enhanced genomic damage. These patients could benefit from the same antineoplastic treatment delivered to patients with normal renal function, but a better risk/benefit ratio could be achieved by establishing specific guidelines. Key considerations are which chemotherapeutic agent to use, adjustment of dosages and timing of dialysis in relation to the administration of chemotherapy...

OBJECTIVE: to analyze the frequency of hypoparathyroidism and of its recurrence after parathyroidectomy in dialysis patients according to different existing classifications. METHODS: we conducted a retrospective study of 107 consecutive dialysis patients undergoing total parathyroidectomy with immediate autograft in a tertiary hospital from 2006 to 2010. We studied the changes in PTH levels in the postoperative period over time. Were grouped patients according to different PTH levels targets recommended according to the dosage method and by the American and Japanese Nephrology Societies, and by an International Experts Consortium...

Objective: To present the result of upgrading a clinical gamma-camera to be used to obtain in vivo tomographic images of small animal organs, and its application to register cardiac, renal and neurological images. Methods: An updated version of the miniSPECT upgrading device was built, which is composed of mechanical, electronic and software subsystems. The device was attached to a Discovery VH (General Electric Healthcare) gamma-camera, which was retired from the clinical service and installed at the Centro de Imagem Pré-Clínica of the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein...

Haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) is a clinical entity defined as the triad of nonimmune haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute renal failure, in which the underlying lesions are mediated by systemic thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA). Different causes can induce the TMA process that characterizes HUS. In this document we consider atypical HUS (aHUS) a sub-type of HUS in which the TMA phenomena are the consequence of the endotelial damage in the microvasculature of the kidneys and other organs due to a disregulation of the activity of the complement system...

Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome is the most common glomerular disease in childhood, affecting 1 to 3 per 100,000 children under the age of 16. It most commonly occurs in ages between 2 and 10. Its cause is unknown, and its histology corresponds to minimal change disease in 90% of cases, or focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. Steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome represents 10-20% of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome in pediatrics. It has a poor prognosis, and its management is a significant therapeutic challenge. Half of patients evolve to end-stage renal disease within 5 years, and are additionally exposed to complications secondary to persistent NS and to the adverse effects of immunosuppressive therapy...

The Piedmont Group of Clinical Nephrology compared the activity of 15 nephrology centers in Piedmont and Aosta Valley as regards bone protection in patients on corticosteroids therapy. Fracture prevalence shows great variability: in 4/15 centers (27%) no fractures were found, in 6/15 centers (40%) fractures were present in 1-4% of cases, in 1 center in 18% of patients. Clinical risk of fracture was based on sex, age and postmenopausal status in 11/14 of the centers (79%), history of fractures and bone disease in 4/14 centers (27%), smoking and alcohol consumption in 3 and 2 centers respectively, glucocorticoid dose and duration in 4, in children bone age and calcium phosphorus status...

The aim of this article is to update the 2010 recommendations on the evaluation and management of renal disease in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. Renal function should be monitored in all HIV-infected patients. Tubular function tests should include determination of serum phosphate levels and urine dipstick for glycosuria...

Chronic renal failure is a high morbidity and mortality condition, with its terminal phase incidence and prevalence steadily growing year after year. According to the Sociedade Brasileira de Nefrologia [Brazilian Society of Nephrology], the main causes of renal failure are arterial hypertension, glomerulonephritis and diabetes mellitus. Several factors are implied on chronic renal failure patients' risk of mortality, particularly age, diabetes and associated co-morbidities. For patients below 50 years old, the 5 years survival rate is 62% and for those above this age and with diabetes mellitus, just 23%...

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, several bodies produce renal guidelines, potentially leading to duplication of effort while other topics may remain uncovered. A collaborative work plan could improve efficiency and impact, but requires a common approved methodology. The aim of this study was to identify organizational and methodological similarities and differences among seven major renal guideline bodies to identify methodological barriers to a collaborative effort. METHODS: An electronic 62-item survey with questions based on the Institute of Medicine standards for guidelines was completed by representatives of seven major organizations producing renal guidelines: the Canadian Society of Nephrology (CSN), European Renal Best Practice (ERBP), Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcome (KDIGO), Kidney Health Australia-Caring for Australians with Renal Insufficiency (KHA-CARI), Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiative (KDOQI), Sociedad Latino-Americano de Nefrologia e Hipertension (SLANH) and United Kingdom Renal Association (UK-RA)...
