UNLABELLED: Bone strength is important to prevent osteoporotic fractures and determined by bone mass and microarchitecture. This study suggests that having higher lean mass and lower fat mass, avoiding western dietary patterns, and improving steps per day may all be important for maintaining bone mass and microarchitecture in aging. PURPOSE: To describe associations between exposures of lean mass and fat mass, dietary patterns, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), physical activity and grip strength, and bone outcome measures including bone mineral density and microarchitecture in older adults...

A communicating subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and leadless pacemaker system is being developed for patients who require both pacing and ICD therapy. It is important to ensure that the paced morphology from the leadless pacemaker will be sensed appropriately by the subcutaneous ICD. We present 2 cases illustrating our approach and workflow. OBJECTIVE: Parental or caregiver alcohol use, particularly heavy regular or episodic use, can increase the risk of child maltreatment within individual families. At the national level, higher per capita alcohol consumption has been associated with increased child injury mortality in Australia. This study aimed to investigate whether an association exists between substantiated child maltreatment cases, numbers of licensed outlets, and average alcohol sales volumes at the community level (local government area [LGA]) over a 13-year period across Western Australia (WA)...

OBJECTIVE: Using a qualitative design this study aimed to (1) explore the experience of people living with osteoarthritis (OA), (2) gain an understanding of their navigation of the health system and, (3) explore their opinions on the role of exercise and joint replacement surgery for the management of OA. METHODS: Purposive sampling was used to recruit 26 participants with knee OA, aged 45 years and over, from Tasmania, Australia. Semi-structured interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, coded, and thematically analysed to document participant understanding and experience of OA and their opinions on the role of exercise and surgery in managing OA...

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory, neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system which results in disability over time and reduced quality of life. To increase the sensitivity of the EQ-5D-5L for psychosocial health, four bolt-on items from the AQoL-8D were used to create the nine-item EQ-5D-5L-Psychosocial. We aimed to externally validate the EQ-5D-5L-Psychosocial in a large cohort of people with MS (pwMS) and explore the discriminatory power of the new instrument with EQ-5D-5L/AQoL-8D...

BACKGROUND: Sleep difficulties are common in people with multiple sclerosis (MS), but whether associations between poor sleep quality and quality of life are independent of MS symptoms, obesity and other MS-related factors remains unclear. METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses of data from the Australian MS Longitudinal Study (n=1717). Sleep was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale and International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group Rating Scale; health-related quality of life using the Assessment of Quality-of-Life 8-D...

Introduction: Post hoc analyses of osteoporosis trials have suggested that alendronate and strontium ranelate may be associated with a reduction in the progression of spinal radiographic osteoarthritis (OA). We performed an analysis on a subgroup of participants in the horizon PFT trial (a 3-year randomized controlled trial (RCT) of yearly zoledronic acid (ZA) in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis), to evaluate the effect of ZA on the structural progression of spinal osteophytes (OPh) and disk space narrowing (DN)...

Humans are spending an increasing amount of time in space, where exposure to conditions of microgravity causes 1-2% bone loss per month in astronauts. Through data collected from astronauts, as well as animal and cellular experiments conducted in space, it is evident that microgravity induces skeletal deconditioning in weight-bearing bones. This review identifies contentions in current literature describing the effect of microgravity on non-weight-bearing bones, different bone compartments, as well as the skeletal recovery process in human and animal spaceflight data...

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of MRI knee abnormalities in Australian Rules Football (ARF) players and describe their associations with pain, function, past and incident injury and surgery history. INTRODUCTION: 'Drinking occasions' are commonly used to capture quantities of alcohol consumed. Yet this standardised terminology brings with it numerous assumptions and epistemological limitations. We suggest that social changes brought on by COVID-19 restrictions have influenced routines, patterns of time use and drinking practices, highlighting the need to re-examine how we conceptualise drinking and 'drinking occasions' in alcohol research. METHODS: This analysis draws on data gathered from 59 qualitative interviews conducted during the second half of 2020 with Australian drinkers aged 18 and over...

The concept of health promotion emerged in the 1970s, prompting global health leaders to adopt a perspective on maintaining and improving the population's health that accounts for the underlying causes of ill-health and mortality. Health is affected by social, economic and environmental factors, which explains why there are health inequalities within and between countries. Health services have been partly reoriented to focus on promoting health as well as treating ill-health, but health promotion is still misunderstood, including in the nursing profession...

History and physical examination are the diagnostic cornerstones of transient loss of consciousness (TLOC). However, details can be scarce and examination unrevealing, thus making the diagnosis elusive. In a case of convulsive TLOC, the initial diagnosis was incorrect, but a fortuitously captured event on telemetry yielded the diagnosis: extrinsic idiopathic atrioventricular block. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is the most common enzymatic disorder of red blood cells worldwide. The severity of hemolytic anemia varies among individuals with G6PD deficiency, depending on the genetic variant in the G6PD gene; this makes the diagnosis of the condition more challenging in some cases. In this report, we present a case of severe hemolytic anemia and methemoglobinemia in a patient with G6PD deficiency who had been exposed to hydroxychloroquine prescribed for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection...
