As intra-articular corticosteroid injections (CSIs) are a common treatment for osteoarthritis, physicians must well understand their potential side effects. Postinjection flares are an acute side effect of intra-articular CSIs, with symptoms ranging from mild joint effusion to disabling pain. The present case involved a severe postinjection flare that occurred after the patient, a 56-year-old woman with moderate osteoarthritis in the left knee, received 2 mL of 1% lidocaine and 2 mL (40 mg) of triamcinolone acetonide (Kenalog)...

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Lumbar zygapophyseal joint (Z-joint) synovial cysts can cause low back pain (LBP), spinal stenosis, and lower extremity radiculopathy. In the literature, there are several minimally invasive techniques described with mixed results. Typical recommended treatment is surgical resection of the cyst. Currently, there is little information available concerning the efficacy and outcome with treatment of Z-joint synovial cyst by percutaneous, fluoroscopic, contrast-enhanced distention, and rupture...

AIM: To compare the efficacy and side-effects of posterior sub-Tenon injection of triamcinolone acetonide (Kenalog) with orbital floor injection of methylpredisolone acetate (Depomedrone) in the management of posterior uveitis. METHODS: Non-randomized comparative prospective clinical study. Sixty-four eyes from 60 consecutive patients with non-infectious posterior uveitis requiring treatment were allocated on an alternate 1:1 basis to receive either orbital floor methylprednisolone or sub-Tenon triamcinolone using standard procedures and assessed at 6 and 12 weeks...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
V K Ignat'ev
Long-term follow-up of 240 rheumatoid arthritis patients provided evidence for rather high efficacy of local antiinflammatory x-ray treatment: 63.7% and 37.8% of responses in 3 and 12 months, respectively. The author thinks x-ray therapy superior to local laser irradiation. More effects were reached in intraarticular injection of glucocorticoids (kenalog) prior to x-ray exposure. No side effects were registered.

Based on the clinical, experimental and biomechanical studies the authors suggest intraarticular treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and deforming osteoarthrosis (DOA) by means of artificial synovial fluid (ASF) developed with the use of polymers and biopolymers. Rheological studies performed with the use of a Rheotest-2 apparatus and ultrasonic interferometry of the samples of normal, RA, DOA synovial fluid and ASF demonstrated that medium-molecular-weight polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and PVP hyaluronate appeared the most similar to natural synovial fluid, PVP-hyaluronate, PVP and its complexes with other drugs (cyclophosphamide, hydrocortisone, arteparone) were applied intraarticularly to the treatment of 520 patients with RA and DOA...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
V V Popov, N V Bunchuk, N P Apenysheva
The effectiveness of intra-articular administration of kenalog, hydrocortisone, gordox and polyvinylpyrrolidone to patients with gonarthrosis and concurrent synovitis was studied. Kenalog and hydrocortisone were more effective than placebo, while gordox, polyvinylpyrrolidone and placebo had similar effect. Kenalog and hydrocortisone had nearly the same favourable effect in synovitis. Only one patient treated with gordox had side effects. Signs of synovitis were analysed and its most typical symptoms specified...

A group of 145 patients with severe intrinsic bronchial asthma symptoms was treated with repeated intramuscular injections of triamcinolone acetonide (Kenalog) during an average period of two years. Kenalog was administered mainly to persons with persistent attacks of asthmatic dyspnea and frequent recurrent infections of the respiratory tract in which other drugs, including orally administered steroids, did not lead to any improvement in the asthmatic symptoms. The results of therapy were excellent (total disappearance of asthmatic manifestations) or good (considerable improvement of asthma symptoms) in 88...

Clinical experience with triamcinolone acetonide (Kenalog) injections into the nasal turbinates for allergic and vasomotor rhinitis is reported by two authors. Gratifying results have occurred in most of the over 60,000 patients treated, with no serious side effects. Two cases of intravascular injections of another corticosteroid reaching the retinal circulation are reported, and methods for preventing this complication are proposed.
