For more than half a century, biologist Julian Huxley's term, the "Modern Synthesis", has been used as a label for a model of biological evolution where genetic influences are viewed as a principal source of creativity and change. Over the years, as evidence has accumulated that there are many other, far more important factors at work in evolution, theoretical "compromises," such as the so-called "Extended Synthesis", have been proposed. This is no longer tenable. It is time to abandon the Modern Synthesis, and its doppelganger "The Selfish Gene"...

Immersive virtual reality-based training and research are becoming more and more popular and are in continuous development. For instance, it is now possible to be trained by one's virtual self (i.e., doppelganger), meaning that a trainee can participate in a training program in which the trainer resembles the trainee. While past research involving doppelgangers showed promising results, findings revealed gender effects such that doppelganger-based training seems to be beneficial only for male trainees. In the present research, we contribute to this literature by investigating the emotional reactions and perceptions that people have when they meet a virtual human in immersive virtual reality...

This study attempted to assess the reproducibility of 2D and 3D forensic methods for facial depiction from skeletal remains (2D sketch, 3D manual, 3D automated, 3D computer-assisted). In a blind study, thirteen practitioners produced fourteen facial depictions, using the same skull model derived from CT data of a living donor, a biological profile and relevant soft tissue data. The facial depictions were compared to the donor subject using three different evaluation methods: 3D geometric, 2D face recognition ranking and familiar resemblance ratings...

The cytoplasm is a complex, crowded, actively-driven environment whose biophysical characteristics modulate critical cellular processes such as cytoskeletal dynamics, phase separation, and stem-cell fate. Little is known about the variance in these cytoplasmic properties. Here, we employed particle-tracking nanorheology on genetically encoded multimeric 40-nm nanoparticles (GEMs) to measure diffusion within the cytoplasm of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. We found that the apparent diffusion coefficients of individual GEM particles varied over a 400-fold range, while the differences in average particle diffusivity among individual cells spanned a 10-fold range...

Quadruplets are at elevated physical risks at prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal levels, relative to twins. A brief review of this area is followed by discussion of a female quadruplet with three co-quadruplet brothers. Next, several timely twin research reports are examined. The topics include antenatal corticosteroids and twins' neonatal outcomes, the meaning of fatherhood in families with twins, what doppelgängers (look-alikes) reveal about physical and behavioral similarity, and monozygotic (MZ) co-twin discordance for asymmetric pigmented paravenous chorioretinal atrophy...

Here, we detail the use of doppelgangerIdentifier (DI), providing software installation, data preparation, doppelgänger identification, and functional testing steps. We demonstrate examples with biomedical gene expression data. We also provide guidelines for the selection of user-defined function arguments. Doppelgänger effects (DEs) occur when samples exhibit chance similarities such that, when split across training and validation sets, inflates the trained machine learning (ML) model performance. This inflationary effect causes misleading confidence on the deployability of the model. Thus, so far, there are no tools for doppelgänger identification or standard practices to manage their confounding implications. We present doppelgangerIdentifier , a software suite for doppelgänger identification and verification...

Lipomatous tumors are among the most common soft tissue lesions encountered by the general surgeon. Shared history and clinical presentation make differentiation between benign lipomas and low-grade liposarcomas a diagnostic dilemma. This article reviews the epidemiology, clinical history, diagnostic workup, management, natural history, and surveillance of benign lipomas and atypical lipomatous tumors/well-differentiated liposarcomas. Although it is important that aggressive, potentially malignant atypical lipomatous tumors and liposarcomas be managed in a multidisciplinary, preferably high-volume setting, it is equally as important for the nonspecialist general surgeon to be familiar with lipoma and its doppelganger-the well-differentiated liposarcoma...

Centrosomes are best known as the microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs) of eukaryotic cells. In addition to their classic role in chromosome segregation, centrosomes play diverse roles unrelated to their MTOC activity during cell proliferation and quiescence. Metazoan centrosomes and their functional doppelgängers from lower eukaryotes, the spindle pole bodies (SPBs), act as important structural platforms that orchestrate signaling events essential for cell cycle progression, cellular responses to DNA damage, sensory reception and cell homeostasis...

The issue of duplicates and duplication in ethnographic collection is frequently regarded as a process that begins and ends in the museum as a fundamental act of the process of curating. In contrast, this article maintains, this practice occurred all along the chain of collecting, where indigenous artefacts operated as items of exchange in the context of the colonial encounter. Using the example of German New Guinea, the article maintains that epistemological concerns, as symbolic currency both in terms of inter-museum exchange and in terms of contributing to individual and institutional prestige, guiding ethnographic intuitions had little influence on colonial resident collectors...

Various suborganelles are delimited by lipid bilayers, in which high spatial and temporal morphological changes are essential to many physiological and pathological processes of cells. However, almost all the amphiphilic fluorescent molecules reported until now are not available for in situ precise tracking of membrane dynamics in cell apoptosis. Here, the MO (coumarin pyridine derivatives) was devised by engineering lipophilic coumarin and cationic pyridine salt, which not only lastingly anchored onto the plasma membrane in dark due to appropriate amphipathicity and electrostatic interactions but also in situ reflected the membrane damage and heterogeneity with secretion of extracellular vesicles (EVs) under reactive oxygen species regulation and was investigated by two-photon fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy...

Face recognition assessments that use images of celebrities require not only face recognition ability but also pop-culture knowledge and successful recall of identifying information. Here, we introduce a task designed to measure face recognition more specifically: the Famous Faces Doppelgangers Test (FFDT). Participants ( N = 57,407) identified 40 celebrities paired with lookalike doppelgangers, allowing face recognition ability to be assessed without requiring information recall. In addition, participants reported whether they were familiar with each celebrity, allowing poor face recognition ability to be differentiated from low pop-culture knowledge...

Machine learning (ML) models have been increasingly adopted in drug development for faster identification of potential targets. Cross-validation techniques are commonly used to evaluate these models. However, the reliability of such validation methods can be affected by the presence of data doppelgängers. Data doppelgängers occur when independently derived data are very similar to each other, causing models to perform well regardless of how they are trained (i.e., the doppelgänger effect). Despite the abundance of data doppelgängers in biomedical data and their inflationary effects, they remain uncharacterized...

The synthesis and characterization of the double perovskite SrLaLiOsO6 is presented. It is isostructural ( P 21 / n ) and isoelectronic (5d2 ) with SrLaMgReO6 , which has been reported previously. The cell volumes are the same to within 1.4%: i.e., these perovskites are doppelgängers. In a previous study SrLaMgReO6 showed no sign of spin order to 2 K. New data at lower temperatures disclose a maximum in the dc susceptibility near 1.5 K. As the Curie-Weiss (C-W) temperature (Θ) for this material is -161 K, an enormous frustration index, f ≈ 100, is implied ( f = |Θ|/ T ord )...

During autoscopic phenomena, people perceive a double of themselves in extrapersonal space. Such clinical allocentric self-experiences sometimes co-occur with auditory hallucinations, yet experimental setups to induce similar illusions in healthy participants have generally neglected acoustic cues. We investigated whether feeling the presence of an auditory double could be provoked experimentally by recording healthy participants' own versus another person's voice and movements using binaural headphones from an egocentric (the participants' own) and an allocentric (a dummy head located elsewhere) perspective...

In a within-subjects design, participants were exposed to four virtual characters of different degrees of realism and observer similarity (avatar numbers AN=1-4), ranging from an abstract stickperson to a personalized doppelganger avatar designed from 3d scans of the observer...
