As spring is on the horizon, my children begin to anticipate the end of the school year with thoughts of sleeping in, free days at the pool, and long evenings outside with friends. I, too, look forward to this time of the year, and a much needed hiatus from coaxing kids out of bed, making school lunches, and homework help in the evenings. However, I do not look forward to finding a new "kid sitter" for my preteens and teenager. Choice of childcare is perceived as perhaps one of the most stressful decisions parents must make for their children...

Pediatic Pulmonary & Critical CareSESSION TYPE: Original Investigation SlidePRESENTED ON: Monday, October 27, 2014 at 04:30 PM - 05:30 PMPURPOSE: Status asthmaticus is a common reason for pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission. Continuous nebulized albuterol is commonly used in these patients, but limited data exist to support a specific albuterol dose in critically ill children with status asthmaticus. Overall status asthmaticus care is protocolized in our PICU, but dosage of continuous albuterol is left to the discretion of the treating physician...

Pediatic Pulmonary & Critical CareSESSION TYPE: Original Investigation SlidePRESENTED ON: Monday, October 27, 2014 at 04:30 PM - 05:30 PMPURPOSE: Current care extends survival for some patients (pts) with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). We compare the clinical characteristics of pts with DMD and very prolonged survival (VPS) to pts with early death (ED), to identify potential risk factors.METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of our pts with DMD from 1999-present. DMD diagnosed by clinical features and muscle biopsy and/or genetic testing...

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this multicenter survey is to characterize the use of direct thrombin inhibitors (DTIs) in the pediatric population. The results of this survey may be used to design a prospective multicenter study with the ultimate goal of developing a dosing/titration recommendation for the use of DTIs in the pediatric population. METHODS: This is a multicenter, descriptive study to survey hospitals around the country regarding the use of DTIs (argatroban, bivalirudin, and lepirudin) in the pediatic population...

REVIEW
Marlies P Schijven, Suzanne S Gisbertz, Mark I van Berge Henegouwen
Gastro-esophageal reflux disease is a troublesome disease for many patients, severely affecting their quality of life. Choice of treatment depends on a combination of patient characteristics and preferences, esophageal motility and damage of reflux, symptom severity and symptom correlation to acid reflux and physician preferences. Success of treatment depends on tailoring treatment modalities to the individual patient and adequate selection of treatment choice. PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) were searched for systematic reviews with an abstract, publication date within the last five years, in humans only, on key terms (laparosc* OR laparoscopy*) AND (fundoplication OR reflux* OR GORD OR GERD OR nissen OR toupet) NOT (achal* OR pediat*)...

BACKGROUND: Antibiograms created by aggregating hospital-wide susceptibility data from diverse patients can be misleading. To demonstrate the utility of age- and location-stratified antibiograms, we compared stratified antibiograms for three common bacterial pathogens, E. coli, S. aureus, and S. pneumoniae. We created stratified antibiograms based on patient age (<18 years, 18-64 years, >/=65 years), and inpatient or outpatient location using all 2009 E. coli and S. aureus, and all 2008-2009 S...

BACKGROUND: Renal hyperparathyroidism (rHPT) almost inevitably develops in pediatric patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) and may require parathyroidectomy (PTX) despite intensified conservative therapy. Long-term duration of uncontrolled rHPT may result in disabling osteodystrophy and vascular calcifications. Only a few reports on children undergoing PTX for rHPT are available and mainly consist of case reports with short follow-up periods. To study this entity, we analyzed the course of 23 pediatic patients who underwent PTX for rHPT...

UNLABELLED: Since 1982, mature and immature teratomas have been recruited into the MAHO and MAKEI protocols of the German Society for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology (GPOH) for testicular and non-testicular germ cell tumors in order to study the epidemiology and clinical behaviour of teratomas. Patients were registered in the epidemiologic German Childrens Cancer Registry and the GPOH Childrens Tumor Registry for pathological review. Patients with immaturity grade 2 and 3 according to Gonzales-Crussi were eligible for adjuvant chemotherapy...

The purpose of neonatal screening is to find those that have a high risk for a disorder and therefore need further action for diagnosis and treatment. The separation of the high-risk and low-risk groups is typically achieved by establishing cut-off values for interpretation of the test result. The guidelines should preferably include both a low cut-off and a high cut-off value, with a grey zone between them. The width of the grey zone can be used for defining the quality required by the assay. The present work is based on the use of the EZ Rules software (from Westgard QC, Madison, WI), which automatically selects control rules...

Questionnaires were sent to boarding members of Japanese Society for Allergology (response rate 65.2%; 49 dermatologists [Derma] and 101 pediatricians [Pedia] ) to ask the order of choice in therapy attitudes, in the oral in comparison to the local therapy and in the oral therapy only. As for therapy attitudes, "suppress inflammation" (Infla), "reduce staphylococcal colonization" (Staph), "inhibit scratching" (Scrat), "guard skin from irritation" (Guard), "avoid allergen" (Avoid), and "support psychologically" (Psych) were presented...
