Objective To investigate the effects of gender and age on the prevalence and complications of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD). Methods A total of 8429 NAFLD patients were selected from the Health Check-up Center and Outpatient Departments of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University(Qingdao). The questionnaire-based survey, physical examinations, biochemical tests, and liver ultrasonography were performed for all cases.Patients were divided into young group(<45 years),middle aged group(45 years≤age<60 years),and old group(≥60 years)according to age,and the clinical features and laboratory findings were analyzed...

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia and chronic pain have previously associated with HIV infection for over two decades. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of FMS symptoms in an ethnically heterogeneous population of HIV-infected individuals in southern Israel, applying the proposed new diagnostic criteria for diagnosis of fibromyalgia symdrome (FMS). METHODS: 156 HIV-positive patients followed at the AIDS clinic of the Soroka University Medical Center (SUMC) who gave written informed consent were recruited in the trial...

MonoMAC syndrome is characterized by monocytopenia with susceptibility to nontuberculous mycobacterial infections. First recognized in 2011, it is caused by GATA2 mutations and can manifest as disseminated mycobacterial, fungal, and viral infections. While mortality rates for this disorder have been high, it has recently been successfully treated with haploidentical allogeneic stem cell transplant. Since approximately one third of patients may have rheumatologic symptoms, such as erythema nodosum, panniculitis, or arthralgias, rheumatologists may expect to encounter this newly described entity with increasing frequency...

OBJECTIVE: To determine symptom overlaps between functional heartburn (FH), functional dyspepsia (FD), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). METHODS: One hundred and ten patients with frequent heartburn but no mucosa breakage under endoscopy were enrolled consecutively. They were required to fill out a questionnaire. The overlapped symptoms of FD and IBS symptoms were screened using Rome ill criteria. The participants were also examined using Hamilton anxiety scale/Hamilton depression scale...

BACKGROUND: Patients with Marfan syndrome are referred for cardiac surgery due to root aneurysm with or without aortic valve regurgitation. Because these patients are young and frequently present with normal-appearing aortic cusps, valve sparing is often recommended. However, due to the genetic nature of the disease, the durability of such surgery remains uncertain. METHODS: Between February 2004 and June 2012, 100 patients in our department suffering from aortic aneurysm with aortic valve regurgitation underwent elective aortic valve-sparing surgery...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: X-linked Alport syndrome (X-AS) is caused by mutations of the COL4A5 gene, which encodes for the collagen IV α5 chain (α5[COLIV]), resulting in structural and functional abnormalities of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) and leading to CKD. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic value of residual collagen IV chain expression in the GBM of patients with X-AS. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: The medical records of 22 patients with X-AS from 21 unrelated families collected between 1987 and 2009 were reviewed (median age at last follow-up, 19...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of hemoperfusion in the treatment of intermediate myasthenia syndrome (IMS) following acute organophosphate poisoning (AOPP). METHODS: Eighty cases of IMS following AOPP, who were admitted to the Emergency Department of our hospital from 2006 to 2011 and had complete clinical records, were divided into HP treatment group (n = 36) and non-HP (NHP) treatment group (n = 44). The therapeutic efficacy of HP was evaluated by comparing the clinical data of the two groups...

This case report describes a patient with a locally advanced oropharyngeal cancer with a simultaneous paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis. To the best of our knowledge, a paraneoplastic neurological syndrome is a rare complication in head and neck cancer, and has previously not been reported in the literature. One year later, following initial treatment, a small cell lung cancer developed, a tumor frequently associated with this type of paraneoplastic syndrome. The dilemma, therefore, is whether this paraneoplastic symdrome was a secondary complication of the tonsilar concurrent cancer or a metachronous paraneoplastic syndrome prior to small cell lung cancer...

The post polio symdrome (PPS) refers to the development of delayed neuromuscular symptoms among survivors, years after the initial presentation of acute poliomyelitis. The symptoms of PPS vary widely and include flaccid palsy, muscle weakness, scoliosis, osteoarthritis, gait disturbance, sleep apnea syndrome (SAS), dysphagia, chronic lung dysfunction, and others. We report the successful combination of peripheral nerve blocks, femoral and sciatic nerve blocks, for surgery on the lower extremity in a patient with PPS...

Alpha-(1,2)-fucosyltransferase (FUT1) gene has been identified as a candidate gene for regulating the expression of Escherichia coli F18 receptor gene (ECF18R) which promotes adherence of Enterotoxigenic (ETEC) and Verotoxigenic (VTEC) Escherichia coli (E. coli) via F18 fimbriae. In order to illustrate the polymorphisms of FUT1 and their effects on resistance to natural infection by Porcine Respiratory and Reproductive Symdrome Virus (PRRSV) and Haemophilus parasuis, the distributions of different genotypes and the relative risks of disease incidence in pigs were investigated...

INTRODUCTION: Treatment with valproate is associated with an increased risk of teratogenicity compared to other antiepileptic drugs and can cause a complex of serious symptoms usually referred to as "foetal valproate symdrome" which is characterised by major and minor malformations in association with developmental delay. This paper aims to give attention to the syndrome through four case descriptions. Furthermore, possible risk factors and the use of the mutation 677C-T as a risk marker are discussed...

Acute aortic syndrome is an acute lesion of the aortic wall involving the aortic tunica media, with a potencial risk of severe complications. The aortic dissection is the main cause (80%), but other entities, such as the intramural hematoma (15%) and the penetrating aortic ulcer (5%), are a less frequent cause. A 49-year-old man, hypertensive, dyslipemic, and without drug treatment, was admitted in the emergency service due to a sudden pain in the mid-chest approximately 3 hr previously. No pain radiation or hemodynamic affectation were apparent...

There is a disorder that is called Guillain-Barre Symdrome(GBS). Currently, plasmapheresis and high-dose immunoglobulin therapy are used for GBS. Plasmapheresis is one of the blood purifications. When the blood purification is enforced, it should be careful to decrease the blood pressure. In the Tokushima University Hospital, the hematocrit(Ht) values are measured using Crit-Line Monitor(CLM), because the Ht values are rate of red cell in blood, and are relation of the blood pressure. Hence, it is important to predict Ht value using the prediction method...
