OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to characterize and identify correlates of healthy days at home (HDaH) before and after TBI requiring inpatient rehabilitation. Setting: Inpatient hospital, nursing home, and home health services. PARTICIPANTS: Average of n= 631 community-dwelling fee-for-service age 66+ Medicare beneficiaries across 30 replicate samples who were hospitalized for traumatic brain injury (TBI) between 2012 and 2014 and admitted to an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) within 72 hours of hospital discharge...

BACKGROUND: Ageing populations are increasing the demand for knee arthroplasty. Concurrently, the prevalence of medical comorbidities are rising too. The Self-Administered Comorbidity Questionnaire was developed to provide a patient's assessment of their own comorbidities whereas the American Society of Anesthesiologists grades and the Charlson Comorbidity Index utilise clinical evaluation to objectively measure perioperative morbidity and mortality risk. The primary aim of this study was to compare Self-Administered Comorbidity Questionnaire scores with American Society of Anesthesiologists grades and Charlson Comorbidity Index scores...

Traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) has significant physical, psychological, and socioeconomic impacts. However, the epidemiological characteristics and treatment patterns of TSCI in South Korea remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate TSCI incidence and treatment behaviors in South Korea from 2008 to 2020. We included data from 30,979 newly diagnosed TSCI patients obtained from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA). Treatment trends, location of surgery, surgical method, comorbidities, factors affecting hospital stay, and risk factors affecting readmission were analyzed...

(1) Background: Patients' comorbidities play an immanent role in perioperative risk assessment. It is unknown how Charlson Comorbidity Indices (CCIs) from different sources compare. (2) Methods: In this prospective observational study, we compared the CCIs of patients derived from patients' self-reports and from physicians' assessments with hospital administrative data. (3) Results: The data of 1007 patients was analyzed. Agreement between the CCI from patients' self-report compared to administrative data was fair (kappa 0...

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) catheter ablation in cancer patients has been evaluated in very few studies. We aimed to investigate utilization trends and in-hospital outcomes of AF catheter ablation among cancer patients in a large US inpatient registry. Methods: Utilizing the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database, patients who underwent AF catheter ablation between 2012 and 2019 were identified. Sociodemographic, clinical data, in-hospital procedures and outcomes were collected. Baseline characteristics and in-hospital outcomes were compared between patients with and without cancer...

Objectives: To examine whether severe Gulf War illness (SGWI) case status was associated with longitudinal multimorbidity patterns. Methods: Participants were users of the Veteran Health Administration Health Care System drawn from the Gulf War Era Cohort and Biorepository ( n = 840). Longitudinal measures of multimorbidity were constructed using (1) electronic health records (Charlson Comorbidity Index; Elixhauser; and Veterans Affairs Frailty Index) from 10/1/1999 to 6/30/2023 and (2) self-reported medical conditions (Deficit Accumulation Index) since the war until the survey date...

BACKGROUND: ARASENS has demonstrated the efficacy and safety for darolutamide (DARO) with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) plus docetaxel in metastasis hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC). There is a lack of reports for DARO with ADT in mHSPC though the regimen is used in clinical from time to time. Moreover, recent studies have supported the importance of early and rapid prostate-specific antigen (PSA) reduction, which correlates with reduced disease progression and improved survival in patients with mHSPC...

INTRODUCTION: Patients with hormone receptor positive breast cancer are recommended at least five years of adjuvant endocrine therapy, but adherence to this treatment is often suboptimal. We investigated longitudinal trends in adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) adherence among premenopausal breast cancer patients and identified clinical characteristics, including baseline comorbidities and non-cancer chronic medication use, associated with AET adherence. METHODS: We included stage I-III premenopausal breast cancer patients diagnosed during 2002-2011 and registered in the Danish Breast Cancer Group clinical database who initiated AET...

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal vaccination is a preventive method to reduce pneumonia related mortality. However, real-world data on efficacy of the pneumococcal vaccine in reducing mortality is lacking, especially in elderly patients. This study was conducted to assess the effects of prior pneumococcal vaccination in elderly pneumonia patients. METHODS: The data was procured from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment and Quality Assessment database. BACKGROUND: Statins may reduce the risk of recurrent gallstone disease by decreasing bile cholesterol saturation and pathogenicity. However, limited studies have investigated this issue. This study aimed to assess whether statin doses and serum cholesterol levels were associated with a decreased risk of recurrent biliary stone diseases after the first event index, with a follow-up time of 15 years. METHODS: Based on the Chang Gung Research Database (CGRD) between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2020, we enrolled 68,384 patients with the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth and Tenth Revision codes of choledocholithiasis...

We assessed 160 patients who received imipenem/cilastatin/relebactam for ≥2 days. At treatment initiation, median Charlson Comorbidity Index was 5, 45% were in the intensive care unit, and 19% required vasopressor support. The in-hospital mortality rate was 24%. These data advance our understanding of real-world indications and outcomes of imipenem/cilastatin/relebactam use.
