Obesity and overweight are significant global health issues, and numerous obesity intervention studies have been conducted. Summarizing current knowledge of interventions aims to inform researchers and policymakers to keep up-to-date with the latest scientific advancements and trends. In this review, we comprehensively retrieved and screened 4,541 studies on obesity intervention published between 2018 and 2022 in the Web of Science Core Collection, and objectively presented research frontiers using bibliometric analysis...

BACKGROUND: The adoption of electric vehicles for mobility is seen as a major step towards the conservation of the environment. In India, slow-moving Electric 3-Wheelers (E3Ws) have been adopted for last-mile connectivity. The present study investigated the impact of slow-moving electric 3-wheelers on the environment in terms of emissions and traffic performance in mixed conditions. METHODS: Field traffic data from a section of road in the city of Lucknow was collected and used for the calibration of the traffic model...

This study was the first to investigate the levels of heavy metals in commercially important fish species ( Lates niloticus and Oreochromis niloticus ) and the human health risk in Southern Ethiopia. Sixty fish samples were collected from the Omo delta. The target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI), and target cancer risk (TCR) were used to estimate the human health risks. The mean levels of heavy metals detected in the liver and muscle of Lates niloticus generally occurred in the order of Fe> Zn > Pb > Cu >Mn> Cr > Co > Ni and Fe > Pb > Zn >Mn > Cu > Co > Cr >Ni, respectively...

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has not only posed significant challenges to public health but has also impacted every aspect of society and the environment. In this study, we propose an index of notifiable disease outbreaks (NDOI) to assess the impact of COVID-19 on other notifiable diseases in Shanghai, China. Additionally, we identify the critical factors influencing these diseases using multivariate statistical analysis. We collected monthly data on 34 notifiable infectious diseases (NIDs) and corresponding environmental and socioeconomic factors (17 indicators) from January 2017 to December 2020...

Background: Socioeconomic Status (SES) is a potent environmental determinant of health. To our knowledge, no assessment of genotype-environment interaction has been conducted to consider the joint effects of socioeconomic status and genetics on risk for metabolic disease. We analyzed data from the Mexican American Family Studies (MAFS) to evaluate the hypothesis that genotype-by-environment interaction (GxE) is an essential determinant of variation in risk factors for metabolic syndrome (MS). Methods: We employed a maximum likelihood estimation of the decomposition of variance components to detect GxE interaction...

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in natural waters are of escalating global concern due to their detrimental impact on environmental health. Emerging evidence indicates that algae-bacteria symbionts can affect HAB features, though much about this interplay remains largely unexplored. The current study isolated a new species of Mucilaginibacter (type strain JXJ CY 39T ) from culture biomass of the bloom-causing Microcystis aeruginosa FACHB-905 (Maf) from Lake Dianchi, China. Strain JXJ CY 39T was an aerobic, Gram-stain-negative rod bacterium that grew at 5-38°C, pH 4...

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella Infantis has disseminated worldwide, mainly linked to the consumption of poultry products. Evidence shows dissemination of this pathogen in Chile; however, studies are primarily limited to phenotypic data or involve few isolates. As human cases of Salmonella Infantis infections have substantially increased in recent years, this study aimed to characterise the genomic epidemiology and antimicrobial-resistance profiles of isolates obtained from different sources, aiming to inform effective surveillance and control measures...

Building fires can be considered a risk to the health and safety of occupants. Environmental factors in building fires might affect the speed of an evacuation. Therefore, in this study participants ( N  = 153) were tested in an experimental design for the effects of (1) a fire alarm, (2) darkness and (3) the use of emergency exit signs on building evacuation time. In addition, the effects of age and gender on evacuation time were investigated. The main results indicate that the combination of a fire alarm, darkness and not illuminated emergency exit signs had a significant negative influence on evacuation time, namely an increase in evacuation time of 26...

The mode of action (MOA) underlying perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)-induced liver tumors in rats is proposed to involve peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) agonism. Despite clear PPARα activation evidence in rodent livers, the mechanisms driving cell growth remain elusive. Herein, we used dose-responsive apical endpoints and transcriptomic data to examine the proposed MOA. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with 0, 1, 5, and 15 mg/kg PFOA for 7, 14, and 28 days via oral gavage...

Through an online experiment, 1,062 U.S. adults were randomly assigned to one of four conditions as part of a 2 (information type: conflicting vs...

Resilience is common, yet our understanding of key biopsychosocial and environmental correlates is limited. Additionally, perceived resilience is often conflated with absence of psychiatric symptoms. Marines and Corpsmen did not differ significantly on psychosocial or clinical factors, and 50...

Selenium (Se) bioaccumulation and toxicity in aquatic vertebrates have been thoroughly investigated. Limited information is available on Se bioaccumulation at the base of aquatic food webs. Additional Se bioaccumulation assays were conducted in the laboratory with these BMI to (i) confirm field results, (ii) compare Se bioaccumulation in lab-read and native H...

In view of health and environmental concerns, together with the upcoming restrictive regulations on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), less impactful materials must be explored for the hydrophobization of surfaces. Polysaccharides, and especially chitosan, are being explored for their desirable properties of film formation and ease of modification. We present a PFAS-free chitosan superhydrophobic coating for textiles deposited through a solvent-free method. By contact angle analysis and drop impact, we observe that the coating imparts hydrophobicity to the fabrics, reaching superhydrophobicty (θA  = 151°, θR  = 136°) with increased amount of coating (from 1...

Dairy production systems display a wide range of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission characteristics influenced by factors like geographical location, farm size, herd composition, milk yield, management practices, and existing infrastructure. Effective national GHG mitigation plans for the dairy industry should incorporate strategies that account for the diversity within this system. This paper aims to introduce a multi-scale framework to assess the GHG mitigation potential within the Israeli dairy system. It begins by analyzing the GHG intensity per unit of milk produced by a representative sample of 145 farms (20 % of the national dairy farms)...
