Epidermoid cysts are infrequent lesions occupying the intracranial space, comprising approximately 1-2% of all intracranial tumors. Brainstem epidermoids are exceptionally uncommon in children; up until now, only a few scattered case reports have been documented in the literature regarding this unique location. These cysts commonly arise from the inclusion of ectodermal elements during neural tube closure. Complete excision of these cysts is challenging due to their close proximity and adherence to the brainstem, which makes it difficult to achieve...

Verrucous cysts are uncommon types that cannot be distinguished from epidermal inclusion cysts clinically and require histopathological analysis and human papillomavirus (HPV) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for accurate diagnosis. The pathogenesis of verrucous cysts is thought to involve HPV infection, either of an existing cyst or through direct infection of keratinocytes, leading to new cyst formation. While verrucous cysts can affect individuals of any sex and are typically found on the trunk, extremities, and face, they are particularly notable for their potential association with high-risk HPV types, such as 16 and 18, which may lead to malignant transformation...

Malignant transformation of epidermoid cysts is a rare complication. Most of the previously reported cases have involved postoperative malignant transformations. We present a case of malignant transformation of a nonpostoperative epidermoid tumor into squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) that occurred in a 61-year-old Chinese woman. The patient's initial cranial MRI scan showed an epidermoid cyst with marginal enhancement in the pre-pontine cistern, and the lesion gradually enlarged after 10 months. A craniotomy was performed using to remove part of the tumor via the right retrosigmoid approach, and postoperative pathology confirmed that the transformation of the epidermoid cyst was malignant...

Pathologies of the vagina are important causes of symptoms related to the genital tract in women. They can be missed on transabdominal ultrasonography (USG), which is the baseline modality used for evaluation of gynaecological complaints. Transperineal USG and MRI are the imaging modalities of choice for evaluation of the vagina. Diseases of the vagina can be grouped depending upon the age group in which they occur. In children and young adults, congenital anomalies like longitudinal or transverse vaginal septum, imperforate hymen, vaginal aplasia or atresia, and rectovaginal fistula can be seen...

The high incidence of epithelial malignancies in HIV-1 infected individuals is associated with co-infection with oncogenic viruses, such as high-risk human papillomaviruses (HR HPVs), mostly HPV16. The molecular mechanisms underlying the HIV-1-associated increase in epithelial malignancies are not fully understood. A collaboration between HIV-1 and HR HPVs in the malignant transformation of epithelial cells has long been anticipated. Here, we delineated the effects of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase on the in vitro and in vivo properties of HPV16-infected cervical cancer cells...

In this study, doxorubicin was loaded in a chitosan-albumin nanogel with the aim of improving its stability and exploring the potential of the system in the treatment of skin cancer. Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction confirmed the encapsulation of the drug. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the spherical shape of the nanogel particles. The drug-loaded nanogel was characterized with a small diameter of 29 nm, narrow polydispersity (0.223) and positive zeta potential (+34 mV). The exposure of encapsulated doxorubicin to light (including UV irradiation and daylight) did not provoke any degradation, whereas the nonencapsulated drug was significantly degraded...

Epidermoid cysts, also known as keratin cysts, are benign cystic malformations containing keratin and lipid-rich debris. These lesions generally present as painless, nontender, soft tissue masses. They can involve any part of the body but most commonly involve face, chest, back, and genital areas. They can have both congenital and acquired presentation. They are in general seen as a solitary skin nodule but can rarely present as multiple skin nodules. We present a case of a 52-year-old male patient who presented with multiple skin nodules involving face, chest, and back...

Epidermoid cysts rarely present in the submandibular area, constituting approximately less than 7% of all cystic lesions in the head and neck region and less than 0.01% of all oral cavity cysts. Therefore, epidermoid cysts can be easily misdiagnosed, as the differential diagnosis for a submandibular area mass is very broad. Imaging can help define characteristics of the mass; however, a pathologic specimen is usually required for the final diagnosis. Surgical excision is often required and tolerated well by most patients...

Dermoid cyst (DC), a rare benign tumor of developmental origin that develops from mesoderm and ectoderm, is frequently identified in children. DC refers to three cysts that are histologically related, namely, DC, epidermoid cyst, and teratoma. About 70% of DCs are discovered in children aged five years or younger, with the majority being congenital. DC of the head and neck are rare, accounting for only 7% of all such cysts. DC, or benign cutaneous tumors, tend to grow and persist. The presence of epithelial cells along the lines of embryonic closure results in a DC...

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare idiopathic cerebrovascular disorder that causes transient ischemic attack (TIA) and ischemic stroke in the pediatric population. Herein, we report an extremely rare case of Moyamoya syndrome (MMS) and late-onset idiopathic aqueduct stenosis, a unique form of non-communicating hydrocephalus. A 17-year-old female presented with an intractable headache and occasional faintness. Pertinent medical history included a fourth ventricle epidermoid cyst without any evidence of aqueduct stenosis, which was surgically removed when she was two years of age...

Dermal sinus tracts (DSTs) are congenital lesions that connect the cutaneous ectoderm with the underlying neuroectodermal tissues. They are typically midline, solitary lesions. Multiple, and atypically located DSTs have been only rarely described. We present two cases of multiple and laterally located DSTs. The first presented with bacterial meningitis and two tracts in the right buttock, one of which entered the spinal canal through the S3 neural foramen. The second child had three midline lumbar DSTs, one subcutaneous dermoid cyst and one intradural epidermoid cyst...

BACKGROUND: A peri-implant cystic lesion is a rare finding, and to date most investigators have considered that its pathogenesis is caused by trauma and infection related to dental implantation. However, the pathogenesis of these cysts remains unclear and is recognized to have multifactorial origins. We present a fascinating case of a patient who suffered from persistent headaches for three months due to an epidermoid cyst located in the prepontine cistern. Epidermoid cysts are a very uncommon type of intracranial tumor, known for their slow growth and gradual onset of neurological symptoms. In this particular case, our patient, a 35-year-old, experienced a headache that was accompanied by dizziness, photophobia, and pain when moving their eyes. Further imaging revealed a cystic lesion in the prepontine cistern, which had a mass effect on the pons...
