As a popular medicinal plant traditionally used in Tibet of China, Nepeta angustifolia C. Y. Wu is mainly administered to treat apoplexia, cerebral haemorrhage, fainting and epilepsy and other symptoms, while its effect on hyperuricemia is still unclear. In the present study, we evaluated the improvement of the 70% ethanol extract of Nepeta angustifolia C. Y. Wu in fructose-induced hyperuricemic mice. The results revealed that Nepeta angustifolia C. Y. Wu significantly decreased blood glucose and blood lipid levels, as well as lowering the urinary levels of uric acid, creatinine and urea nitrogen...

BACKGROUND: Cordia myxa L. (Boraginaceae) is widely distributed in tropical regions and it's fruits, leaves and stem bark have been utilized in folk medicine for treating trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. A population-based study showed that T. cruzi infection is associated with cognitive impairments. Therefore, if C. myxa has ameliorating activities on cognitive function, it would be useful for both T. cruzi infection and cognitive impairments. METHODS: In this study, we evaluated the effects of an ethanol extract of leaves of C...

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most widespread diseases affecting the world's population causing substantial morbidity, mortality and long-term complications. This study was designed to investigate possible hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and antioxidant effect of ethanolic stem bark extract of Anacardium occidentale in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Twenty-eight STZ (60 mg/kg body weight)-induced diabetic, male albino rats were randomly distributed into Groups II-V (7 rats each) and orally administered with water, metformin (14...

Momordica dioica (M. dioica) is a gourd like blooming plant that is readily available in Bangladesh, requiring biological research to discover its therapeutic values. The goal of our research was to see if the ethanolic extract of this plant had any anti-hyperglycemic properties. Water, glibenclamide and M. dioica extracts were fed to Streptozocin induced type-2 diabetic rat models at a dose of 1.25 g/kg body weight (bw) for 28 days to see what kind of effects they had on serum glucose, insulin, liver glycogen and lipid contents...

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive brain disorder, and one of the most common causes of dementia and amnesia. Due to the complex pathogenesis of AD, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Although scientists have made increasing efforts to develop drugs for AD, no effective therapeutic agents have been found. Objectives: Natural products and their constituents have shown promise for treating neurodegenerative diseases, including AD. Thus, in-depth study of medical plants, and the main active ingredients thereof against AD, is necessary to devise therapeutic agents...

We evaluate the chemical composition and antidiabetic properties of the hexane (Hex-Mn) and chloroform (Chlo-Mn) fractions obtained by partition of the crude ethanolic extract from the leaves in rats. Chemical composition analysis of Hex-Mn and Chlor-Mn was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (CG-MS). Aquilaria crassna is a herbal plant that has recently been reported to possess several biological activities. A. crassna leaf extracts have been demonstrated to have a glucose-lowering effect in animal models. However, it is unclear what phytochemical compounds mediate this antidiabetic property. Here, we describe analytical methods for identifying such compounds from dried leaves by differential extractions with ethanol, butanol, ethyl acetate, and water, respectively. The phytochemical compounds in each fraction were further identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry...

The objective of our study was to evaluate the effect of Physalis peruviana L. fruits in the management of diabetes and diabetic nephropathy in relation to its metabolic profile. In-vitro α-amylase, β-glucosidase, and lipase inhibition activities were assessed for the ethanolic extract (EtOH) and its subfractions. Ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction showed the highest α-amylase, β-glucosidase, and lipase inhibition effect. In vivo antihyperglycemic testing of EtOAc in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats showed that it decreased the blood glucose level, prevented the reduction in body weight, improved serum indicators of kidney injury (urea, uric acid, creatinine), and function (albumin and total protein)...
