SCOPE: Momordica charantia (M. charantia) has anti-diabetic effects, and cucurbitane-type triterpenoid is one of the compounds of M. charantia. This study aimed to investigate whether the new cucurbitane-type triterpenoids affect insulin sensitivity both in vitro and in vivo, and the underlying mechanisms. METHODS AND RESULTS: Four compounds (C1-C4) isolated from the ethanol extract of M. charantia enhanced glucose uptake in C2C12 myotubes via insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) rather than via adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase...

Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cusson is a frequently used traditional Chinese medicine that treats gynecological diseases and carbuncles. However, the mechanism of action of C. monnieri remains to be fully elucidated. The present study examined the cell cycle arrest and apoptotic effects resulting from ethanol extract of C. monnieri (CME) in HepG2 (wild‑type p53) and Hep3B (p53‑null) hepatocellular carcinoma cells. An MTT assay was used to confirm the anti‑proliferative effect of CME. The cells were stained with Hoechst 33342 or propidium iodide...

Spirulina maxima, a microalga containing high levels of protein and many polyphenols, including chlorophyll a and C-phycocyanin, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory therapeutic effects. However, the mechanisms where by Spirulina maxima ameliorates cognitive disorders induced by amyloid-β 1-42 (Aβ1-42) are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated whether a 70% ethanol extract of Spirulina maxima (SM70EE) ameliorated cognitive impairments induced by an intracerebroventricular injection of Aβ1-42 in mice...

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Myrianthus arboreus P. Beauv. is a tropical tree used in African folk medicine, including for diabetes. However, little research has yet been conducted to support this ethnopharmacological use of this plant. The present study sought to determine the antidiabetic potential of root bark extracts through cell-based bioassays of liver and muscle glucose homeostasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four extracts were obtained from crude root bark powder: 1 aqueous (AQ), 2 ethanol (EtOH), 3 alkaloid enriched (Alk) (obtained from methanol extract) and 4 dichloromethane (Dic) extracts...

Actinidia arguta (Siebold et Zucc.) Planch. ex. Miq. is one of the most recently domesticated fruit species with increasing commercial production worldwide. It is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine and is used to reduce blood glucose and treat atopic dermatitis. In addition, it possesses antioxidant, anticancer, and antiallergic properties. In this study, we investigated the physical antifatigue and exercise performance effects of A. arguta crude alkaloids (AACA) extracted with 70% ethanol. Four groups of male Kunming mice (n = 16) were orally administered AACA at doses of 0 mg/kg/d (vehicle), 50 mg/kg/d (AACA-50), 100 mg/kg/d (AACA-100), or 200 mg/kg/d (AACA-200) for 28 days...

Banana is an extensively cultivated plant worldwide, mainly for its fruit, while its ancillary product, the banana pseudostem, is consumed as a vegetable and is highly recommended for diabetics in the traditional Indian medicine system. The present study was aimed at elucidating the mechanism of antihyperglycaemia exerted by the ethanol extract of banana pseudostem (EE) and its isolated compounds viz., stigmasterol (C1) and β-sitosterol (C2), in an alloxan-induced diabetic rat model. Diabetic rats which were administered with C1, C2 and EE (100 and 200 mg per kg b...

The effects of Canavalia gladiata ethanolic extract on endurance swimming capacity were evaluated in a mouse model. The mice were orally administered distilled water (CON), hot water extract (CGW), or 80% ethanol extract (CGE). The swimming time to exhaustion was significantly prolonged in the CGE group. Of the three groups, the CGE showed the lowest blood lactate and the highest nonesterified fatty acid and muscle glycogen levels. These results suggest that the administration of CGE could improve endurance swimming capacity by enhancing lipid catabolism and thereby preserving glycogen stores...

BACKGROUND: Inspite of introduction of oral hypoglycemic agents, diabetes and its related complications remains to be a major clinical problem. The aim of this study was to investigate the antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant activities of Grewia asiatica (Linn) stem bark in alloxan induced diabetic rats. METHODS: Diabetes was induced by a single dose of intraperitoneal injection of alloxan (110 mg/kg) in Norwegian Long Evans rats. Ethanol extract of barks from Grewia asiatica (GAE 200 and 400 mg/kg) and metformin (150 mg/kg) were orally administered once daily for 15 days...
