Mucobilia is a rare condition characterized by the accumulation of abundant mucus within the intra- or extrahepatic biliary tree. A variety of hepatobiliary and pancreatic neoplasms are mucin producing and have been associated with the development of mucobilia including biliary mucinosis, biliary papillomatosis, mucin-producing cholangiocarcinoma (MPCC), or cystic neoplasms of the pancreas or biliary tree (cystadenoma or cystadenocarcinoma). We report the case of 46 year-old male with a biliary cystadenocarcinoma of the caudate lobe which resulted in chronic biliary obstruction and relapsing cholangitis...

Cholangiocarcinoma is the second most common primary tumor of the liver after hepatocellular carcinoma and accounts for 5 to 25% of primary hepatic malignancies. Patients with intrahepatic or peripheral cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) most often present at an advanced stage leading to a poor prognosis. A review of the literature has produced only 10 patients who have survived over five years. We review the case of a young woman with a large cholangiocarcinoma, who has been disease free for eight years. The patient was treated with a right hepatic lobectomy, and received 4 cycles of 5-fluorouracil and levamisole postoperatively...

OBJECTIVE: We present the clinical features and outcomes of 22 surgically treated and histopathology-proven cases of mucin-producing cholangiocellular carcinoma (MPCCC). BACKGROUND: Cholangiocellular carcinoma (CCC) is an uncommon malignancy. Unlike hepatocellular carcinoma, it is difficult to set up a high-risk group, and a specific tumor marker has yet to be found. Chronic liver disease is usually not found to be associated with CCC. Information about patients with MPCCC is limited, and the frequency of MPCCC in all patients with CCC has not been reported...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To report the results of surgical treatment of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma with different procedures and to find the factors that may affect the long-term survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1987 to 1994, 57 patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma underwent laparotomy. Among them, resection was performed in 27 patients, operative drainage in 14 patients and biopsy only in 14 patients. The liver resections included 9 right lobectomies, 14 left lobectomies and 4 hilar resections...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Radical resection for patients with peripheral cholangiocarcinoma is rare. Prognostic factors related to survival with peripheral cholangiocarcinoma after hepatectomy have not yet been reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 41 hepatectomized patients with peripheral cholangiocarcinoma, a computer analysis of 14 clinicopathological factors on patients survival was performed with univariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS: Median and mean survival times for patients with peripheral cholangiocarcinoma after hepatectomy were 12...

BACKGROUND: Hepatolithiasis associated with cholangiocarcinoma is not often encountered. During the past 3 years, an increased incidence of patients with hepatolithiasis associated with cholangiocarcinoma was noted. Data were needed to reliably determine the incidence of this disease. METHODS: Data concerning the relationship between cholangiocarcinoma and hepatolithiasis are presented. The treatment modalities and factors that influence long-term survival are discussed...

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is a rare disease. The prognostic factors of resectable cholangiocarcinoma have not been previously reported. Nineteen patients (10M, 9F) with resectable cholangiocarcinoma were investigated to find factors that might influence prognosis. The cumulative survival rate was measured using the Kaplan-Meier method. The log-rank test was used to compare two survivals. Age, sex, tumor size, and positive tissue carcinoembryonic antigen were factors that had no influence on prognosis...

Mucobilia is a rare condition, with copious mucus secretion within the extrahepatic bile ducts resulting in obstructive jaundice and cholangitis. Fifteen patients with mucobilia were treated over an 11 year period. Preoperative study included ultrasonography (15), cholangiography (15), liver scanning (2) and computed tomographic (CT) scanning (1). The diagnosis was made preoperatively in 26.6% (4/15) of the patients. The preoperative diagnosis was based on 1) mucinous substance draining out from the papilla after endoscopic cannulation or percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage fistula 2) multiple amorphous filling defects of the bile duct on cholangiograph 3) biliary duct dilatation with an intrahepatic or liver tumor on image study (sonography or CT scan)...

Free-floating tumor debris or mucobilia as a cause of intermittent obstruction has been described infrequently. A patient with intermittent jaundice caused by tumor emboli from an intrahepatic polypoid mucinous cholangiocarcinoma is presented. Symptoms of intermittent jaundice and midepigastric pain persisted over 5 years despite an initial cholecystectomy and common bile duct exploration before definitive diagnosis and treatment of an hepatic trisegmentectomy (segments II, III, and IV). Intraductal mucin was confirmed intraoperatively and pathologically as the cause of the obstructive jaundice...
