PURPOSE: To investigate the impact on caregivers of caring for a child with congenital upper extremity differences. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, caregivers of patients enrolled in the multi-institutional Congenital Upper Limb Difference (CoULD) registry were contacted. Demographic information and the Impact on Family Scale (IOFS), a validated measure of perceived caregiver strain, were collected. Patient-reported outcome measures from the CoULD registry, the Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI), and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) were also analyzed for correlation with IOFS...

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of combining adhesion release under brachial plexus block with silver needle warm acupuncture for the treatment of frozen shoulder, compared to adhesion release under brachial plexus block alone. METHODS: A total of 72 patients with frozen shoulder were randomly assigned to receive either adhesion release under brachial plexus block (control group) or adhesion release under brachial plexus block plus silver needle warm acupuncture (treatment group)...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of two different applications of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on the reduction of postoperative acute pain after hip fracture surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, 120 patients undergoing hip surgery were divided into three groups. The first group received patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) with epidural fentanyl and additional medications. The second group received lumbar plexus and sciatic nerve transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (LS-TENS) along with the same medication protocol as the first group...

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) remain an important health problem. PNIs mostly affect young men as this age group is mostly involved in road traffic accidents and other injuries at workplace. PNI can occur from foreign bodies like metal chips while working in industries using lathe machines. Among PNI's, injuries to the ulnar nerve, the brachial plexus and the median nerve are the most frequent lesions encountered. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This presentation is on a series of 18 cases of nerve injuries among industrial workers located from finger level up to the arm excluding the brachial plexus due to metallic foreign bodies entering while operating lathe machines over a period of two years with patients being followed-up over a one year period...

The notion that the central nervous system is an immunologically immune-exempt organ has changed over the past two decades, with increasing evidence of strong links and interactions between the central nervous system and the peripheral immune system, both in the healthy state and after ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Although primary injury after stroke is certainly important, the limited therapeutic efficacy, poor neurological prognosis and high mortality have led researchers to realize that secondary injury and damage may also play important roles in influencing long-term neurological prognosis and mortality and that the neuroinflammatory process in secondary injury is one of the most important influences on disease progression...

BACKGROUND: Susac syndrome (SS) describes an endotheliopathy of vessels in the central nervous system. Retinal involvement plays a central role in the manifestation of the disease. OBJECTIVE: This case-control study investigated the macular microvasculature in patients with chronic SS compared to controls using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: 12 eyes of 12 patients with SS were compared with age-matched healthy control subjects with regard to their OCT angiographic parameters...

INTRODUCTION: Varicocele is a condition in which the veins in the spermatic cord become enlarged and twisted. Varicocele is widely recognized as the leading cause of male infertility due to its significant impact on reproductive health in men. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the diameter of the varicose vein and the recovery rate of the spermogram after varicocelectomy. Also, the effect of body mass index (BMI) on sperm parameters after varicocelectomy...

BACKGROUND: There are some functional bradyarrhythmias that are caused by a dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system, for which a therapeutic strategy of cardioneuroablation (CNA) is conceivable. CASE SUMMARY: In this study, we report the case of a 19-year-old woman with a non-congenital third-degree atrioventricular block (AVB), symptomatic for lipothymia and dyspnea caused by mild exertion. She had a structurally normal heart and no other comorbidities. The atropine test and the exercise stress test documented a sinus tachycardia at 190 bpm with a 2:1 AVB, a narrow QRS, and an atrioventricular conduction of 1:1 until reaching a sinus rhythm rate of 90 bpm...

We report the case of a 28-year-old patient who developed acute transient brachial plexopathy secondary to surgical management of an atrophic clavicle nonunion. The treatment was conservative, with symptom resolution at 4 months after surgery. This is the first reported case with electromyographic and neuroconduction follow-up, demonstrating complete and spontaneous resolution of axonal damage. The limited number of cases reported in the scientific literature allows for exploring some underlying causes of the acute plexopathy depending on the nature of the non-union (hypertrophic or atrophic)...

BACKGROUND: Using in vivo neuroimaging techniques, growing evidence has demonstrated that the choroid plexus (CP) volume is enlarged in patients with several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. However, although animal and postmortem findings suggest that CP abnormalities are likely important pathological mechanisms underlying amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the third most common neurodegenerative disease, no available study has been conducted to thoroughly assess CP abnormalities and their clinical relevance in vivo in ALS patients to date...

INTRODUCTION: Hirschsprung's disease (HD) is characterized by the absence of ganglion cells in the submucosal and myenteric plexuses of the colon as a result of disorders in the migration and differentiation of enteric neural crest cells during embryogenesis. It is a cross-factor condition, with more than 11 genes identified in its pathogenesis, including the RET proto-onco gene. Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is widely used animal model of multiple sclerosis (MS). The disease is characterized by demyelination and neurodegeneration triggered by infiltrated autoimmune cells and their interaction with astrocytes and microglia. While neuroinflammation is most common in the spinal cord and brainstem, it is less prevalent in the cerebellum, where it predisposes to rapid disease progression. Because the induction and progression of EAE are tightly regulated by adenosinergic signaling, in the present study we compared the adenosine-producing and -degrading enzymes, ecto-5'-nucleotidase (eN/CD73) and adenosine deaminase (ADA), as well as the expression levels of adenosine receptors A1 R and A2A R subtypes in nearby areas around the fourth cerebral ventricle-the pontine tegmentum, the choroid plexus (CP), and the cerebellum...

BACKGROUND: Marine organisms with sessile adults commonly possess motile larval stages that make settlement decisions based on integrating environmental sensory cues. Phototaxis, the movement toward or away from light, is a common behavioral characteristic of aquatic and marine metazoan larvae, and of algae, protists, and fungi. In cnidarians, behavioral genomic investigations of motile planulae larvae have been conducted in anthozoans (corals and sea anemones) and scyphozoans (true jellyfish), but such studies are presently lacking in hydrozoans...
