OBJECTIVES: Advances in endocrinology and nutrition (E&N) and the importance of its associated disorders require that its teaching within the medical degree meets adequate standards of quality and homogeneity Our objective was to expand the data on E&N undergraduate teaching in Spain. METHODS: We designed an observational, cross-sectional web-based study addressed to the coordinators of E&N teaching at the 42 faculties of medicine that had taught the subject during the 2020-2021 academic year...

Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) is a spectrum of diseases characterized by insensitivity of target tissues to the action of parathyroid hormone and, consequently, by the presence of hyperphosphatemia and hypocalcaemia of varying severity. Early-onset obesity is a feature of PHP type 1A. This article discusses the need to establish uniform criteria to guide the nutritional management of patients with PHP. A decrease in energy expenditure calls for an adjustment of the energy content of the diet. Reducing the intake of foods rich in inorganic phosphorus helps to manage hyperphosphataemia...

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Previous studies have shown that there is decreasing interest in E&N among medical students. The aim of our study was to evaluate the perception of E&N among a sample of medical students. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We surveyed 2252 students prior to taking the exam that allows access to specialised training in Spain. RESULTS: Overall, 9.9% (222 participants) would probably choose E&N. The most positive aspects in includes of the specialty are its logical pathophysiological basis (54%) and that the work is dynamic and varied (27%), while the least attractive aspects are the few interventional techniques...

INTRODUCTION: The comparison between specialties or the analysis of evolution over time of a speciality in the Spanish exam for accessing to the resident physicians training programme (RPTP) is difficult due to the changing of the number of places offered. In this paper we describe two parameters (quotation index and quotation order) that objectify the relationship between supply and demand for places in a given medical speciality in a RPTP call and analyse the evolution of the speciality of Endocrinology and Nutrition (E&N)...

INTRODUCTION: In 2020 the pandemic caused by SARS-COV-2 demanded an enormous number of healthcare resources in order to guarantee adequate treatment and support for those patients. This study aims to assess caloric and protein intake and evaluate its associations with relevant clinical outcomes in critically ill with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients. METHODS: A nationwide, multicentre prospective observational study including twelve Argentinian intensive care units (ICUs,) was conducted between March and October 2020...

During pregnancy, thyroid function disorders are associated with multiple complications, both maternal and foetal. In recent years, numerous Clinical Practice Guidelines have been developed to facilitate the identification and correct management of thyroid disease in pregnant women. However, this proliferation of guidelines has led to confusion by proposing different cut-off points for reference values and different recommendations for similar situations. For this reason, the Sociedad Española de Endocrinología y Nutrición and the Sociedad Española de Ginecología y Obstetricia have prepared this Consensus Document, with the aim of creating a framework for joint action to unify criteria for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid dysfunction in these patients...

Postprandial hyperinsulinaemic hypoglycaemia is a common complication of bariatric surgery. Although in general its evolution is mild and self-limited, it can lead to neuroglycopaenia and compromise the patient's safety and quality of life. The aim of this document is to offer some recommendations to facilitate the clinical care of these complex patients, reviewing the aetiopathogenesis, its diagnosis and treatment that, sequentially, will include dietary and pharmacological measures and surgery in refractory cases...

Endocrinology and Nutrition is a medical specialty covering the study and treatment of diseases of the endocrine system, metabolism and those derived from the nutritional process, including knowledge of diagnostic techniques and dietary and therapeutic measures. In order to develop these activities and plan the management of resources allocated for this purpose, the so-called Portfolio of Services of the specialty has to be defined. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is one of the most complex hormonal regulatory systems, involving several organs that interact to regulate multiple body functions. The study of this system initially focused on investigating its role in the regulation of both cardiovascular function and related pathologies. From this approach, pharmacological strategies were developed for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. However, new findings in recent decades have suggested that the RAS is much more complex and comprises two subsystems, the classic RAS and an alternative RAS, with antagonistic effects that are usually in equilibrium...
