We have devised a simple high-throughput screening compatible fluorescence polarization-based assay that can be used to detect the elongation activity of nucleic acid polymerase enzymes. The assay uses a 5' end-labeled template strand and relies on an increase in the polarization signal from the fluorescent label as it is drawn in toward the active site by the action of the enzyme. If the oligonucleotide is sufficiently short, the fluorescence polarization signal can also be used to detect binding prior to elongation activity...

In the group of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), besides paresthesias in their fingers, we can see paresthesias in forearm; pain in elbow, sholder and neck, which is a reason for complicated diagnosis of it. This kind of complexnost of differential diagnosis pain in hand, is a reason for complet and strict diagnostic procedure. There are 30 patients with clinical and neurophysological findings for CTS in this paper who made provocative tests. Analising their results we made diagnosis of KTS.

Coiled coils comprise two or more helices characterized by a heptad repeat of amino acids denoted a through g. The buried a and d positions are usually occupied by hydrophobic residues. Fos dimerizes via a coiled coil (leucine zipper) with Jun family members to form the transcription factor AP-1. Fos homodimers are relatively unstable due to unfavorable interhelical electrostatic interactions within the Fos two-stranded coiled coil. The Fos coiled coil contains two polar position a Lys residues (Lys 16 and Lys 30 of Fos-p1, a peptide corresponding to the coiled-coil domain of v-Fos)...

PURPOSE: Previous studies at our laboratory identified 6 bladder cancer specific nuclear matrix proteins termed BLCA-1 to 6. We recently developed an immunoassay that detects the bladder cancer specific nuclear matrix protein BLCA-4. We analyzed urine samples from patients with bladder cancer, those with spinal cord injury and normal volunteers to determine the BLCA-4 level in these 3 groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Urine samples obtained from 51 normal controls, and 54 patients with bladder cancer and 202 with spinal cord injury were tested for BLCA-4...

Two advances in cardiac pacing have resulted in an internal conflict in some pacemakers. One is the development of a standard lead physiological sensor and the other is protection from electromagnetic interference (EMI). One popular type of standard lead sensor uses sub-threshold pulses to measure intracardiac and intrathoracic impedance changes, i.e., minute ventilation. Recent clinical observations and extensive in vitro testing have verified that digital cellular phones can be troublesome. Large feedthrough capacitors (FCs), effective in blocking the EMI, will preclude sensing of the standard impedance-based signals...

Patients with complete heart block on a spontaneous, or iatrogenic basis who also have recurrent supraventricular tachycardias, particularly atrial fibrillation and flutter, are often difficult to manage. Various techniques include: independently programmable maximum tracking and maximum sensor rates, limiting the maximum atrial tracking rate to the sensor response of the pacemaker, or automatically switching from DDDR to VVIR based upon the sensed atrial rate. This article will describe a mode switch algorithm that allows for an independently programmable atrial tachycardia detection rate (ATDR)...

To discover whether the American woman has a preconceived idea of her newborn's appearance, ten primigravidas were asked to draw their newborns-to-be and were interviewed about their expectations. Responses were analyzed for recurring themes and compared with a stereotypical baby described by Lorenz. The informants' general descriptions of their newborns-to-be were specific to the particular family. The newborns were closer in appearance to an older baby than to a newborn. The informants' newborns had two of the Lorenz's six stereotypical attributes...

The cecoureterocele differs from the usual ectopic ureterocele because it extends outside the bladder and may obstruct the urethra. The differentiation requires careful examination of the urethra by a voiding cystourethrogram and cystoscopy. We describe the management of a girl with bilateral cecoureteroceles who presented as a newborn with urinary retention and sepsis. Surgical correction of the cecoureterocele may differ from that required for the usual ectopic ureterocele.

The advent of telemetry of the endocardial electrogram is a new capability. It must be convenient to use if it is to gain acceptance. Our experience is still growing but already it is confirming information that was either deduced or previously only available by active invasive procedures. The potential value of the technology has only been touched upon in this presentation. We are convinced that it will grow and that its value will be further established as more physicians have an opportunity to use it and gain additional experience...

We assessed 18 fetuses who harbored a urinary tract malformation that was diagnosed by antenatal sonography. The antenatal diagnosis corresponded to the postnatal diagnosis in 66 per cent of the cases. We review the course of 6 fetuses who had catheters placed percutaneously to drain dilated urinary tracts that were believed to be caused by posterior urethral valves (5) or an obstructed megaureter (1). Only 2 of these fetuses exhibited valves postnatally. No fetus had any recognized benefit from the antenatal intervention...

A new device for coupling the pulse from a standard laboratory stimulator to commercially available implanted pacemakers for use in noninvasive electrophysiology testing has been developed. When programmed to an electrophysiology mode, a 37 kHz carrier wave, generated by the programmer, maintains communication with the implanted pacemaker. Stimuli generated from a standard lab stimulator cause a break in the carrier wave and an output from the pacemaker. Cycle lengths as short as 127 msec can be attained. In addition to standard electrophysiology testing, this noninvasive electrophysiological technique can be used to fibrillate the heart to test the efficacy of automatic implantable cardioverter/defibrillators...

The ability to stimulate one chamber through a lead or output circuit to the opposite cardiac chamber is termed cross-stimulation. Three examples of this phenomenon are presented. The first involves the close proximity of the atrial lead to the ventricular myocardium with ventricular capture occurring at sufficiently high outputs; the second is due to the basic design of dual unipolar pacing systems which have output circuits that share a common anode; the third is a self-limited eccentricity of one device that occurs only during the first phase of magnet-induced asynchronous pacing...

The morphological substrates of pigmented and depigmented skin as well as the structural characteristics of spontaneously developing melanomas were revealed by clinical, light- and electron microscopic methods in gray horses (Lipizzaner breed) from the Vienna Spanish Riding School. On clinical investigations in a group of 31 older horses (more than 10 years old) 20 exhibited melanomas, whereas 23 younger animals (less than 10 years of age) had no evidence for visuable melanotic tumors. Concomitantly with the progressive graying of the hair a depigmentation of the skin was frequently observed...
