Pediatric oncology has achieved major progress by continuous optimization of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. In the interdisciplinary team, the ophthalmologist plays an important role. In the field of strabismus and neuro-ophthalmology clinical symptoms as strabismus, visual loss, anisocoria, visual field defects, and involuntary eye movements may be key indicators of childhood cancer. The appropriate diagnostic workup as well as the diagnostic and therapeutic steps during the course of the disease are important often requiring individually tailored approaches...

The acronym IBD identifies the ulcerative colitis (URC), Crohn's disease (CD) and the undeterminate colitis (UC) 7. Inflammatory bowel diseases are characterized by variegated etiopathogenesis, probably autoimmune. They have in common a histological damage of a granulomatous/ulcerative kind and also the same manifestations which includes the alternation of remissions and exacerbations 1. They have a remarkable familiarity (13.5%) although it is more evident in CD than in URC. The incidence of IBD varies according to different geographical areas but with a steady increasing trend above all in CD and the diffusion seems to be linked to genetic factors (association with HLA-A2 and B 18) and to geographical factors...

An improvement of examination methods in ophthalmology, technical digitalisation and knowledge of validity of examinations in various diseases contributes to early diagnostics, thereby leading to an opportunity for early treatment of eye disorders. Standard introduction of the so-called optical coherence tomography into the ophthamological clinical practice facilitated new options for a detailed analysis of pathological processes in the particular layers of the retina (Fig. 2, Ref. 5). PURPOSE: We studied the prevalence of neutralization antibodies against human adenovirus (hADV) in ophthalmological medical workers as one measure for the prevention of nosocomial infection. METHODS: The prevalence of neutralization antibodies against hADV-3, -4, -7, -8, -11, -19, and -37, which can cause conjunctivitis, was measured in 288 workers at ten ophthamological facilities in Japan. We studied the prevalence in different facilities, different generations, different types of workers (doctors, nurses, and others), and their medical history of hADV conjunctivitis...

Objective assessment of autonomic dysfunction in familial dysautonomia (FD) is largely based on the analysis of cardiovascular responses to challenge maneuvers such as orthostatic stress. Infrared pupillometry (IPM) provides an additional reliable method for cranial autonomic evaluation and has the advantage of requiring minimal cooperation. This study was performed to determine whether IPM contributes to the assessment of autonomic function in FD patients. In 14 FD patients and 14 healthy controls, we studied absolute and relative light reflex amplitude, pupillary constriction velocity (v(constr)), pupillary diameter, early and late pupillary re-dilatation velocity (v(dil 1), v(dil 2)) after dark adaptation...

In September 1996, seven patients at Hospital A suffered conjunctivitis, hearing loss, diminished vision, and headaches 7-24 h after hemodialysis treatment. Eleven-year-old dialysis modules were identified as a common link between these patients. Degradation of the cellulose acetate (CA) material was identified as the cause of this incident. Degradation products were characterized from retrieved CA dialysis membranes. A series of synthesized CA degradation products was tested in vitro to assess toxicity. Based on the toxicity of the material preparations to the cells, animal tests were performed on selected CA degradation extracts and compared to extracts from actual dialysis membranes...

Cysts of 2 isolates of Acanthamoeba from the cornea of 2 patients with confirmed Acanthamoeba keratitis were tested in vitro for sensitivity to antimycotic agents such as fluconazole, miconazole, amphotericin-B, pimaricin, antiprotozoal agents such as pentamidine isetionate and antiseptics which could be use in the ophthamological region. Pimaricin was the most successful cysticidal agent against the two strains. Sensitivity to pentamidine isetionate showed variation. Fluconazole, miconazole and amphotericin-B were resistant against cysts with concentration of eye drops that have been used in the treatment of Acanthamoeba keratitis...

Two first cousins both suffering from insulin dependent diabetes mellitus since early childhood developed progressive optic atrophy from the age of 5 and 9 years respectively. They had similar ophthamological features which include optic atrophy with cupping, paracentral scotomata, and total achromatopsia. One patient also had stunted growth, delayed puberty and psychiatric disorder. Neither had diabetes insipidus and deafness. It is suggested that they may be a variant of DIDMOAD (Diabetes Insipidus, Juvenile Diabetes Mellitus, Optic Atrophy, Deafness)...

With preferential looking (PL) techniques, especially the Acuity Card Procedure (Teller Acuity Cards), the visual acuity in small children can be determined. PL-testing was used in 294 children in the Strabismus and Amblyopia Department of the Ophthamology Hospital in Kraków. These children had been directed from other ophthalmologic departments. Almost all of them showed general retardation and their visual acuity could not be tested with traditional methods. The testing was considered positive when the visual acuity of each eye could be determined separately...

Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis (ECCL) is a congenital hamartomatous disorder characterised by unilateral skin lesions, lipomas, and ipsilateral ophthamological and cerebral malformations. The disorder is thought to represent a localised form of Proteus syndrome. In this report, a child is described with ECCL and a de novo nonsense mutation in exon 29 (S1745X) of the neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) gene. Although it is possible that both ECCL and NF1 occur coincidentally in this patient, we favour the hypothesis that in exceptional cases a mutation in the NF1 gene might give rise to severe congenital malformations such as ECCL...

The effect of man-made mineral fibers on the human eye was investigated in a cross-sectional study of 15 workers exposed to Rockwool and a matched reference group of 15 people. Eye symptoms, changes in the cellular and mucous content of the conjunctival fluid, break-up time of the precorneal film, the number of microepithelial defects, and the number of dead and degenerated cells on the cornea and bulbar conjunctiva were used as measures of effect. The number of fibers accumulated in the eye and conventional dust sampling methods were used as measures of dose...
