OBJECTIVE:  To characterize and compare the outcomes of omphalocele and gastroschisis from birth to 2 years of follow-up in a recent cohort at a tertiary center. METHODS:  This is a retrospective clinical record review of all patients with gastroschisis and omphalocele admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit between January 2009 and December 2019. RESULTS:  There were 38 patients, 13 of whom had omphalocele, and 25 of whom had gastroschisis...

Primary defect closure is the surgical treatment of choice in gastroschisis. When this is not feasible, a silo is required to progressively reduce the organs and perform a deferred closure of the wall. We present the case of a newborn with gastroschisis that required the use of a silo. Once the silo had been created, the distance between borders did not allow the defect to be closed, so decision was made to conduct releasing aponeurotic incisions for mobilization purposes.Progression was uneventful, and enteral nutrition was initiated at 24 days of life...

Introduction: Rare diseases are characterized by their low prevalence, often of genetic origin, degenerative and life threatening. Objective: To describe mortality by orphan diseases and to analyze its trends in Colombia from 2008 to 2013. Materials and methods: We conducted a descriptive study to analyze mortality rate trends from the death certificates between 2008 and 2013. We calculated specific mortality rates and adjusted by age and sex. Results: Seven thousand one hundred and thirty five deaths were attributed to orphan diseases, and 51...

OBJECTIVES: In gastroschisis pregnancies, a) to correlate prenatal ultrasound variables with postnatal outcome and b) to determine the ideal time for setting the delivery in order to achieve the best neonatal outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective review (2000-2015) of all available gastroschisis whose prenatal findings could be correlated with the neonatal outcome. Two study groups have been defined according to the complications present after birth: favorable gastrosquisis and complicated...

AIM OF THE STUDY: Optimal surgical treatment of patients with gastroschisis remains controversial. Recent studies suggest better outcomes with secondary closure techniques (surgical or preformed silo). The purpose of the study is to identify differences in outcome of infants treated with traditional primary closure (PC) versus surgical silo (SS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of patients primarily treated of gastroschisis between 2004 and 2014. Patients were divided in PC and SS according to abdominal wall closure...

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to study the association of adherence to the Mediterranean diet in early pregnancy maternal and the offspring's risk of gastroschisis. METHODS: Case-control study. We describe 11 cases of gastroschisis in the region of Murcia from 2007 to 2012 and 34 concurrent controls. At the time of diagnosis each of the cases completed a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) consisting of 98 items on the periconceptional diet. Confounding factors: smoking, exposure to cannabis / marihuana, age of the parents, BMI, income and educational level...

INTRODUCTION: In gastroschisis, premature birth may avoid the development of intestinal peel and favour the primary closure. We present the preliminary results obtained after following a multidisciplinary approach to gastroschisis. After prenatal ultrasound diagnosis, preterm caesarean delivery at 34-35 weeks of gestation is programmed. METHODS: Prospective design of a study, where we included all prenatal diagnosed gastrosquisis neonates, from July 2007 to January 2012...
