OBJECTIVES: Fertility services in the UK are offered by over 200 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA)-registered NHS and private clinics. While in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) form part of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance, many further interventions are offered. We aimed to record claims of benefit for interventions offered by fertility centres via information on the centres' websites and record what evidence was cited for these claims...

This study was designed to explore the cyproterone acetate (CPA)-induced andrological hypofunction and its correction by oral administration of lycopene. In this concern, spermatogenic, biochemical, histological and genomic profiles were studied. Cyproterone acetate administration for 1 month helped to develop infertile model rats. A significant recovery was noted in sperm motility, sperm count, sperm viability, hypo-osmotic swelling tail-coiled spermatozoa; activities of testicular ∆(5) , 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD), 17β-HSD, catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD); and levels of conjugated diene (CD), malondialdehyde (MDA), testicular cholesterol and serum testosterone after the administration of lycopene at 1...

Retroperitoneal lymphnode dissection (RPLND) is a fundamental surgical step in the treatment of testicular cancer. Nowadays primary RPLND has partially lost its role in favour of active surveillance (for low risk stage I disease) and short cycle chemotherapy in non-seminomatous germ cell tumour (NSGCT). Conversely, postchemotherapy-RPLND (PC-RPLND) remains the standard treatment for residual masses after chemotherapy. In consideration of curability rate of testicular cancer and the life expectancy of testicular cancer survivors the identification and the prevention of andrological complications became fundamental...

INTRODUCTION: Since the initial description of HIV and AIDS, monumental efforts have been made both in the developed and developing countries to devise strategies and medications to control the disease. The advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy has now meant that the diagnosis of HIV is no longer a life-sentence and compliant patients with HIV can expect life expectancy similar to their noninfected peers. Consequently new challenges have arisen in the management of benign conditions...

OBJECTIVE: To characterize vasectomy reversal practice patterns among American Board of Urology (ABU) certifying urologists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the ABU case logs for certifying urologists from 2008 to 2014. Vasectomy reversal procedures were identified by three CPT codes: 55400 (vasovasostomy), 54900 (epididymovasostomy, unilateral), 54901 (epididymovasostomy, bilateral). Demographic data was obtained and reviewed. Multivariate analysis was determined factors influencing the performance of surgical approach...

STUDY QUESTION: What are the primary causes of severe male factor infertility? SUMMARY ANSWER: Although 40% of all patients showed primary causes of infertility, which could be subdivided into three groups based on the severity of their effect, ~75% of oligozoospermia cases remained idiopathic. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: There are few large-scale epidemiological studies analyzing the causes of male factor infertility. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: A prospective clinical-epidemiological study was conducted at the Andrology Centre, Tartu University Hospital between 2005 and 2013, recruiting male partners of couples failing to conceive a child for over ≥12 months...

The aim of this study was to show limitation as well as potential of micro-endoscopy techniques as an innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approach in andrology. Two kinds of custom-made micro-endoscopes (ME) were tested in ex vivo vas deferens specimen and in post-mortem whole body. The semi-rigid ME included a micro-optic (0.9 mm outer diameter [OD], 10.000 pixels, 120° vision angle [VE], 3-20 mm field depth [FD]) and an integrated fibre-optic light source. The flexible ME was composed of a micro-optic (OD = 0...

Given the increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in males of reproductive age, the objective of this prospective case-controlled study was to investigate the impact of subacute systemic inflammation associated with MetS on seminal cytokines and standard sperm parameters in comparison with healthy men. Between 2011 and 2014, we recruited 27 patients with MetS out of 41 obese patients screened from an internal outpatient clinic. Twenty-seven age-matched healthy controls were enrolled from 54 men requesting vasectomy in a urological outpatient clinic...

Various microRNAs from the miR-371-3 and miR-302a-d clusters have recently been proposed as markers for testicular germ cell tumours. Upregulation of these miRNAs has been found in both the tissue and serum of testicular cancer patients, but they have never been studied in human seminal plasma. The aim of this study was, therefore, to assess the differences in the expression of miR-371-3 and miR-302a-d between the seminal plasma and serum of testicular cancer patients, and to identify new potential testicular cancer markers in seminal plasma...

AIM: To provide a systematic review of epidemiological data regarding the association between erectile dysfunction (ED) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men. SEARCH STRATEGY: A research has been conducted on the Medline database using the keywords: ("erectile dysfunction" or "sexual dysfunction") and ("benign prostatic hyperplasia" or "lower urinary tract symptoms"). The eligibility of studies was defined using the PICOS method in accordance with the PRISMA statement...

INTRODUCTION: Testicular cancer is one of the most frequent in young men and its incidence is increasing in recent years because of incidental finding during routine ultrasound exams. Adenomatous hyperplasia of the rete testis is one of the benign and rare pathological types incidentally detected and very few cases are described in the literature. CASE REPORT: A 40 years old man come to our attention for a balanoposthitis without testicular pain. During andrological examination we performed palpation of the testes and we noticed a palpable nodule of hard consistency in the left testicle...

BACKGROUND: Late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) presents with low serum testosterone (TT) levels and sexual and nonsexual symptoms. Erectile dysfunction affects a man's self-esteem and as a result partner relationship and quality of life. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the andrological clinical profile outcomes of testosterone therapy (TTh) in men (n = 88) with symptomatic LOH complaints and symptoms. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Erectile function was assessed using the International Index of Erectile Function-5 questionnaire at baseline and at 6 and 12 months of TTh...

Conventional microscopic semen analysis does not provide precise information on the fertilizing potential of a male. The traditional basis for semen evaluation is that male fertility is dependent on production of a "proper" concentration/number of motile, morphologically normal spermatozoa in excess to achieve conception. Many independent studies, especially in human medicine, have demonstrated that the absolute number of spermatozoa does not accurately determine fertility, but their functional competence. Many functional tests of spermatozoa are developed over the last decades...

With expanding knowledge on the health benefits of exercise, there is an increasing demand for information on the andrological consequences of participating in sports. These consequences are especially important in the context of infertility problems worldwide. The so-called "male factor" is reported in up to 50% of couples having trouble with conception. The answer to the question, "Is physical activity good for male reproductive health?" is not straightforward. A number of studies have suggested that significant changes in semen parameters may occur due to sports training of certain types, intensities, and durations...
