Seminal oxidative stress (OS) is well-known to affect male fertility status. The discrepancy in OS measurement has hindered its clinical use as a quality indicator for semen. Some tests measured single markers of oxidants or reductants, leading to lack of standardization of results. Oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) is a better representative for OS as it provides an overall measure of the activity of both oxidants and reductants. ORP assessment by MiOXSYS has been introduced as a measure of OS with high specificity in differentiating fertile from infertile semen samples...

OBJECTIVE: Previous study conducted by the Turkish Society of Andrology in 1999 reported the prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) as 69.2% in men of ≥40 years of age, using a single-item non-validated question. This rate seemed to be higher compared to the studies reported worldwide. So, there was a need to carry out another epidemiological study by using validated questionnaires. Our aim was to investigate ED prevalence, severity, and its correlates in men aged ≥40 years using validated tools...

OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of OSA in men presenting with ED at a single centre. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: All men attending a specialised andrology outpatient department with a new diagnosis of erectile dysfunction were included in this prospective study. All patients completed 3 questionnaires: International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and 2 sleep questionnaires. The sleep questionnaires used were the 'OSA screening' questionnaire and the Insomnia severity index'...

The integrity of sperm deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA) is one of the determinants that ensure normal fertilization, implantation, pregnancy, and the generation of a healthy progeny. Assessment of sperm DNA fragmentation has gained importance as a tool to provide significant information regarding sperm quality, and it can independently predict sperm fertilizing potential. The sperm chromatin dispersion (SCD) assay is one of the available techniques to detect sperm DNA damage with results comparable to the gold standard - Sperm Chromatin Structure Assay...

Uncertainty of measurement has become a paramount factor to consider in pathology. In the UK, consideration of uncertainty of measurement is mandatory for medical laboratories who apply to be accredited against ISO15189:2012 via the United Kingdom Accreditation Service. This guideline intends to help those working within diagnostic andrology to better understand the concept of uncertainty, and how it can be applied to semen analysis and post-vasectomy semen analysis. The various areas where uncertainty may exist are identified, and guidance is provided to minimise this uncertainty...

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study is to assess impairment of spermatogenesis induced by varicocele in, to our knowledge, the largest single-centre caseload available to date. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study on 4230 consecutive patients attending our Department for andrological outpatient assessment and preconception check-ups between 2011 and 2014. A total of 2113 patients had varicocele (Group V), while the remaining 2117 were selected as the control group (Group C)...

OBJECTIVE: To explore the potential relationship between erectile dysfunction (ED), low testosterone levels, and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study on patients referred to the andrology unit in 7 Spanish centers. The ED was diagnosed and graded using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) score. Total testosterone, the prevalence of each comorbidity, and the CCI were compared between patients with different grades of ED...

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate seminal oxidant-antioxidant activity in idiopathic and varicocele infertility in men. METHODS: Total anti-oxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS), paraoxonase (PON1), aryl esterase (ARE), and total thiol levels (TTL) were measured in seminal plasma with an autoanalyzer. The TOS/TAC ratio was determined as the oxidative stress index (OSI). A histopathological evaluation of the sperm was performed in the andrology laboratory of the hospital...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Concerns about the detrimental effects of occupational and environmental exposure on male reproductive function have been raised by reports of declining sperm quality over the last decades. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between altered semen parameters and exposure to occupational risk factors as assessed by questionnaire. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study among a population of 2122 men who underwent andrological investigation for couple infertility...

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of D-ribose and L-cysteine on aluminum-induced testicular damage in male Sprague-Dawley rats. METHOD: A total number of thirty-five (35) adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups (AD). Group A (comprised five (5) rats) was designated the Control Group that received Physiological Saline; while groups B, C, and D (comprised ten (10) rats) were given 75 mg/kg, 150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg of body weight of aluminum chloride respectively for 39 days...

OBJECTIVE: To define the precise cellular localization of ciliated bronchial epithelium 1 (CBE1) in the human testis and test its relationship to impaired spermatogenesis. DESIGN: Gene expression analysis, and histologic and immunohistochemical evaluation. SETTING: University research laboratories and andrologic outpatient clinic. PATIENT(S): Forty-three human testicular biopsies: 12 biopsies showing normal spermatogenesis (NSP), 8 with maturation arrest at level of spermatocytes (STA), 8 with maturation arrest at level of spermatids (SDA), 4 with scattered elongating spermatids, and 12 with Sertoli cell-only syndrome, with an additional 5 semen samples from healthy donors...

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence indicates that a systemic state of inflammation may impair fertility, but data about psoriatic males are scarce. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess gonadal function in psoriatic males implementing our knowledge about fertility in these subjects. METHODS: Male psoriatic patients, aged between 18 and 55 years, and a group of healthy subjects matched for age, BMI and geographic origin were enrolled. All subjects underwent a complete physical and andrological examination, standard semen analysis, complete microbiological analysis and ultrasound evaluation of sexual glands...

Breasts, including the nipple and areola, have two functions: lactation and as an erogenous area. Male breasts are much less studied that those of women. In men, breasts have only an erotic function. Because there is dense and very well organized innervation of the nipple-areola complex in men, nipple erection occurs frequently and via different mechanisms from penile erection. Although it seems to be less important for men than for women and it is poorly studied, the erotic value of breast stimulation is notable...

To investigate the association between coronary heart disease (CHD) and erectile dysfunction (ED) in Chinese Han population. Patients who went to the andrological out-patient clinic of our hospital between August 1, 2015 and May 1, 2016 and met all eligible criteria were enrolled in this study. The patients diagnosed as ED using self-administered International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) questionnaire were considered as case group and others were considered as control. The cases were categorized as mild, moderate, and severe ED...

Cryopreservation of human spermatozoa is a highly efficient procedure for managing male fertility, and much of its successful application seems to have a crucial impact on the reproductive outcome of assisted reproduction technologies. Here, we present, explain, and describe the slow freezing method for preserving human spermatozoa, which is currently the most commonly used freezing technique in most clinical andrology laboratories.
