PURPOSE: To describe the pathophysiology of secondary macular hole (MH) in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 360 consecutive primary fovea-off RRDs presenting to St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, from January 2012 to September 2022 were included. Preoperative OCT was assessed for bacillary layer detachment (BALAD) abnormalities. Histological sections of normal eyes were assessed to inform OCT interpretations. Primary outcome measure was the progression of BALAD to full-thickness MH (FTMH)...

RATIONALE: Development and spontaneous closure of a macular hole (MH) in a vitrectomized eye is relatively rare. We report our findings in a case in which vitrectomy was performed successfully to treat a vitreous hemorrhage (VH), but a MH developed eight months later. The MH spontaneously closed 2 weeks later, but then reopened. A second vitrectomy was performed with insertion of the internal limiting membrane flap into the MH which led to the successful closure of the MH. The purpose of this article is to present an explanation of how MH developed in this eye without vitreous traction...

OBJECTIVES: The objcetive is to compare the anatomic and functional outcomes of vitrectomy between internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling and non-ILM peeling in diabetic tractional retinal detachment (TRD). METHODS: Twenty-three eyes with diabetic TRD with ILM peeling were compared with twenty-four eyes with non-ILM peeling. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was recorded at baseline and 3, 6, 9, 12 months, and end of follow-up. The mean retinal thickness across nine different regions that defined in the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) were obtained...

PURPOSE: To investigate the impact of phacoemulsification on posterior vitreous detachment formation in eyes with vitreomacular traction (VMT) with or without macular holes. METHODS: A retrospective search of the medical records was conducted to identify patients with VMT who underwent cataract surgery at Mass Eye and Ear from 2016 to 2021. Patient demographics, ocular comorbidities, and clinical characteristics were extracted from the record, and optical coherence tomography images were assessed to confirm VMT and the presence of a lamellar or full-thickness macular hole (FMTH)...

SIGNIFICANCE: Spontaneous closure of an idiopathic full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) is a rare event. The underlying mechanisms are unclear due to the difficulty in detecting subtle structural changes even with serial imaging. Previous reports are largely optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based but multimodal imaging could highlight new information. PURPOSE: to report the spontaneous closure of an idiopathic FTMH (iFTMH), its recurrence and late closure documented by serial OCT integrated with multimodal imaging modalities and microperimetry (MP)...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to report a case of spontaneous formation and resolution of a lamellar macular hole in a patient with diabetic macular edema treated with steroid implants. METHODS: This study is a case report. RESULTS: A 53-year-old man presented with blurry vision and was found to have diabetic macular edema that remained refractory to treatment despite multiple short-term intravitreal steroid implants. He was eventually treated with an intravitreal fluocinolone acetonide implant and was subsequently noted to have developed a lamellar macular hole that then resolved spontaneously without any additional therapy...

PURPOSE: To present a case of a myopic macular hole that spontaneously closed twice in the presence of a broadly adherent posterior hyaloid membrane. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 49-year-old man with high myopia and pseudophakia had a full-thickness macular hole in the left eye. The hole spontaneously closed in all retinal layers before the elective surgery, but the macular hole recurred one month later. The hole started sealing again spontaneously after one month, leaving a defect in the outer retinal layers...

PURPOSE: Myopic choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and myopic traction maculopathy are major complications of pathologic myopia, and myopic foveoschisis (MF) is one of several symptoms that can be included under the general term "myopic traction maculopathy"; however, only a few cases will have MF around the myopic CNV. We report three cases with MF around myopic CNV that followed different clinical courses observed using swept-source optical coherence tomography. OBSERVATIONS: Case 1 was a 69-year-old woman with an axial length of 29...

PURPOSE: For the treatment of lamellar macular hole (LMH), the recent development of a lamellar hole-associated epiretinal proliferation (LHEP) embedding technique is likely to improve functional and anatomical results. However, the peeling of LHEP is often technically challenging. We have developed a new technique using a backflush needle with a silicone tip cannula that seems safer and more effective for use in LHEP embedding. BACKGROUND: Myopic traction maculopathy (MTM) are retinal disorder caused by traction force on the macula, which can lead to varying degrees of vision loss in eyes with high myopia. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an effective imaging technique for diagnosing, detecting and classifying retinopathy. MTM has been classified into different patterns by OCT, corresponding to different clinical strategies. PURPOSE: We aimed to engineer a deep learning model that can automatically identify MTM in highly myopic (HM) eyes using OCT images...
