PURPOSE: To report the retinal phenotype of a rare case of long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCHAD)/trifunctional protein (TFP) deficiency diagnosed in his late 40s with ocular findings of diffuse chorioretinal atrophy and bilateral retinoschisis. METHODS: An acylcarnitine profile assay revealed LCHAD/TFP deficiency in a 45-year-old man with a history of high myopia, bilateral decreased vision, episodic rhabdomyolysis, and peripheral neuropathy. Ocular findings were evaluated with spectral domain optical coherence tomography (Spectralis OCT; Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) and color fundus photography...

PURPOSE: To compare the surgical outcome of a lamellar macular hole (LMH) depending on lamellar hole-associated epiretinal proliferation (LHEP) and full-thickness macular hole. METHODS: This is a retrospective chart review. Thirty-three patients were enrolled for this study. The patients were divided into three groups depending on the type of macular hole and presence of LHEP. Group 1 had epiretinal membranes with LMH without LHEP, Group 2 had LMH with LHEP, and Group 3 had full-thickness macular hole with LHEP...

The authors describe three vitrectomized eyes that each subsequently developed a full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) that then spontaneously closed and summarize the current literature reporting these rare events. Clinical history, imaging, and course of three patients were reviewed and compiled. All three cases in this series developed a FTMH less than 7 months following vitrectomy (for epiretinal membrane [ERM], n = 1) and retinal detachment (n = 2) that demonstrated spontaneous resolution within 2 months of symptom onset, without intervention...

Intraoperative optical coherence tomography (iOCT) represents another milestone in ocular imaging technologies. Now, for the first time, high resolution OCT images are available not only pre- or postoperatively, but also intraoperatively. In recent years, there have been significant advances in iOCT technology - from hand-held probes and mounted systems towards iOCT systems which are fully integrated into the surgical microscope and which provide seamless integration into the workflow. These systems offer high-resolution, intraoperative OCT scans in real-time and provide additional information on microstructures of the retina or the cornea...

PURPOSE: To discuss the unique morphology and origin of epiretinal proliferation associated with macular hole (EPMH) occasionally observed in full-thickness macular hole (FT-MH) or lamellar hole (LH) and to introduce the perifoveal crown phenomenon encountered when removing this unusual proliferative tissue. METHODS: Sixteen patients showing EPMH in spectral domain-optical coherence tomography were selected from 212 patients diagnosed with MH, LH, FT-MH, impending MH, macular pseudohole, or epiretinal membrane between January 2013 and December 2014...

PURPOSE: To compare the morphologic and functional characteristics and response to surgery of lamellar macular holes (LMHs) with and without lamellar hole-associated epiretinal proliferation (LHEP) and standard epiretinal membrane (ERM). DESIGN: Retrospective observational case series. METHODS: Setting: Vitreoretinal clinical practice. STUDY POPULATION: Eigthy-four eyes of 84 patients. BACKGROUND: To evaluate demographic, functional, and morphological parameters of idiopathic lamellar macular hole (ILMH). METHODS: Observational longitudinal retrospective study. Optical coherence tomography examinations and corresponding clinical charts of a series of consecutive patients affected by ILMH, between January 2010 and March 2015, from the database of the Department of Ophthalmology of Trento Hospital, Italy, have been collected and examined. Demographic and functional parameters were: age (year), gender (male/female), eye (right/left), lens status, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (LogMAR)...

AIM: Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is a physiological phenomenon due to aging characterized by separation of the vitreous cortex from the retina and may induce a variety of pathological events at the vitreoretinal junction. The aim of this study is to highlight in vivo anatomical and functional changes in early stages of PVD allowing the correct treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Non-consecutive case series; optical coherence tomography (OCT) relies on analyzing the reflectivity of coherent light from different anatomical interfaces within posterior vitreous and retinal histological layers, thus acquiring transverse sections through vitreoretinal interface, sensory retina, retinal pigment epithelium and choroid...

BACKGROUND: Using intraoperative optical coherence tomography (iOCT) can be advantageous during macular surgery and lamellar keratoplasty. It is yet unknown if there is a distinct benefit in its application in retinal detachment surgery. OBJECTIVE: What can be shown using iOCT during retinal detachment surgery? Can therapeutically relevant decisions be made and do they have a prognostic implication on postoperative results? METHODS: Based on already published (11 patients/eyes) and our own new data (23 patients/eyes),findings by iOCT during retinal detachment surgery are presented...

PURPOSE: Inflammation due to retinal neuroepithelial necrotic granulomas of toxoplasmosis can extend to neighbor areas and may develop focal adhesions of the posterior hyaloid, to the surface vessels, and the margins or adjoining areas of retinochoroiditis plaques. These adhesions may develop vitreoretinal traction and retinal tears. Vitreoretinal traction may be macular (VMT) or extramacular depending on the location of the toxoplasmic plaques. Vitreomacular traction may follow anomalous posterior vitreous detachment...

X linked retinoschisis (XLRS) is the most common juvenile onset retinal degeneration. The disorder leads to poor vision in old age. Complications, however, can lead to earlier loss of vision in this condition. This report describes two patients of XLRS, who had presented with poor vision because of having had a lamellar macular hole at a young age. Lamellar macular holes are rare and have never been reported to cause early onset poor vision in XLRS.

PURPOSE: To study morphological and functional characteristics of myopic lamellar macular hole (LMH) with posterior staphyloma. METHODS: Retrospective observational longitudinal study. Forty myopic eyes affected by LMH and posterior staphyloma have been examined. Pathological myopia was defined as axial length equal or superior to 26.5 mm. LMH was defined on the basis of the following characteristics: irregular foveal contour, inner retinal defect with or without intraretinal splitting and absence of full thickness retinal defect...

All interventions were standard 25 G vitrectomy with membranectomy of the internal limiting membrane (ILM), peeling and gas tamponade with SF6 20 %. Operations were performed by a single experienced surgeon within the last 3 years. Best corrected visual acuity and optical coherence tomography appearance were determined preoperatively and postoperatively...
