The current study examined the frequency and predictors of older adults' engagement with symptom reporting in COVIDWATCHER, a mobile health (mHealth) citizen science application. Citizen science is a type of participatory research that leverages information provided by community members. There were 1,028 COVIDWATCHER participants who engaged with symptom reporting between April 2020 and January 2021. Approximately 13.5% ( n = 139) were adults aged ≥65 years. We used a Wilcoxon test to compare the mean frequency of engagement with symptom reporting by older adults (i...

OBJECTIVE: Prior studies comparing subjective and objective health literacy measures have yielded inconsistent results. Our aim was to examine the concordance between Newest Vital Sign (NVS) and Brief Health Literacy Screen (BHLS) scores in a large cohort of English- and Spanish-speaking urban Hispanic adults. METHODS: Item means, standard deviations, corrected-item total correlations, Cronbach's alpha, and Spearman correlations and area under receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve analysis were used to compare NVS and BHLS items and total scores...

Effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence strategies for HIV+ adolescents and young adults (AYA) are needed to prevent HIV-related morbidity, mortality, and onward transmission. In the Adherence Connection for Counseling, Education, and Support (ACCESS) pilot, an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design was used to develop and test a peer-led, mobile health (mHealth) cognitive behavioral ART adherence intervention. HIV+ AYA (ages 16-29 years) with unsuppressed plasma HIV RNA (HIV viral load) were eligible for this five-session intervention directed to improving ART adherence and HIV viral load...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the state of health information technology (HIT) usability evaluation in Africa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched three electronic databases: PubMed, Embase, and Association for Computing Machinery. We categorized the stage of evaluations, the type of interactions assessed, and methods applied using Stead's System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Bennett and Shackel's usability models. RESULTS: Analysis of 73 of 1002 articles that met inclusion criteria reveals that HIT usability evaluations in Africa have increased in recent years and mainly focused on later SDLC stage (stages 4 and 5) evaluations in sub-Saharan Africa...

The Future of Nursing 2020 to 2030 report explicitly addresses the need for integration of nursing expertise in designing, generating, analyzing, and applying data to support initiatives focused on social determinants of health (SDOH) and health equity. The metrics necessary to enable and evaluate progress on all recommendations require harnessing existing data sources and developing new ones, as well as transforming and integrating data into information systems to facilitate communication, information sharing, and decision making among the key stakeholders...

OBJECTIVE: To explore experiences of symptoms of suspected or confirmed COVID-19 illness among women using the CovidWatcher mobile citizen science app. DESIGN: Convergent parallel mixed-methods design. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-eight self-identified women consented for follow-up after using CovidWatcher. Participants' ages ranged from 18 to 83 years old. METHODS: We collected data via semistructured, virtual interviews and surveys: the COVID-19 Exposure and Family Impact Survey and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System measures...

Objective: This integrative review explores the barriers to and facilitators for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination among adult transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people in the United States. Data Source: A systematic search of electronic databases included PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, and EMBASE from 1985 to 2020. Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria: Inclusion criteria included studies from the United States that described HPV vaccination barriers or facilitators and included adult TGD participants, both quantitative and qualitative studies...

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the association of daily physical exercise with pain symptoms in endometriosis. We also examined whether an individual's typical weekly (ie, habitual) exercise frequency influences (ie, moderates) the relationship between their pain symptoms on a given day (day t ) and previous-day (day t-1 ) exercise. PARTICIPANTS: The sample included 90 382 days of data from 1009 participants (~85% non-Hispanic white) living with endometriosis across 38 countries...

INTRODUCTION: The use of electronic health (eHealth) tools has the potential to support the overall health, wellness, fitness status, and ability to deploy worldwide of active duty service members (SMs). Additionally, the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic forced healthcare organizations to quickly convert to virtual care settings to decrease face-to-face interactions and increase access to healthcare using technology. The shift to virtual care and the push to increase use of eHealth tools heightened the need to understand how military members interact with eHealth tools...

Explanatory models describe individuals' perceptions of their illness experiences, which can guide culturally relevant care. We constructed an explanatory model of the experience of living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the Dominican Republic. Following qualitative descriptive methodology, we conducted interviews in Spanish using a semi-structured interview guide developed using Kleinman's explanatory model framework. Two bilingual researchers coded interview transcripts following conventional content analysis...
