BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic hernia repair in recent times has gained the most acceptance among both the surgical community and the patient groups, as it has proven benefits of lesser postoperative hospital stay and less pain scores. The incidence of both inguinal and ventral hernias has increased significantly in the present days. Various methods have been postulated by different surgical groups for repairing the same but no there is no standard consensus on managing concomitant inguinal and ventral hernias...

BACKGROUND: Acetabular cup positioning in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is closely related to outcomes. The literature has suggested cup parameters defined by the Lewinnek safe zone; however, the validity of such measures is in question. Several studies have raised concerns about the benefits of using the Lewinnek safe zone as a predictor of success. In this study we elected to use prospective surgeon targets as the basis for comparison to see how successful surgeons are positioning their cup using standard instruments and techniques...

The available evidence suggests that the kidney may contribute importantly to the development of an iron deficiency state in patients with heart failure and may be injured by therapeutic efforts to achieve iron repletion. The exceptional workload of the proximal renal tubule requires substantial quantities of iron for ATP synthesis, which it derives from Fe3+ bound to transferrin in the bloodstream. Following ferrireduction, Fe2+ is conveyed by divalent transporters (e.g. DMT1) out of the endosome of the proximal renal tubule, and highly reactive Fe2+ can be directed to the mitochondria, sequestered safely in a ferritin nanocage or exported through the actions of hepcidin-inhibitable ferroportin...

BACKGROUND AIMS: Cytopenias after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) are a common complication, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms of which remain incompletely understood. Multipotent mesenchymal stromal/stem cell (MSC) therapy has been successfully employed in the treatment of immune-related disorders and can aid in the restoration of the hematopoietic niche. METHODS: A phase II clinical trial to assess the efficacy and safety of administering four sequential doses of ex-vivo expanded bone marrow MSCs from a third-party donor to patients with persistent severe cytopenias after allo-SCT was performed...

Background: The treatment of choledocholithiasis with nondilated common bile duct (CBD) is a challenge for surgeons who often choose endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography with laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) staging surgery instead of simultaneous laparoscopic CBD exploration with LC because of the small CBD diameter. This study aims to introduce and assess the clinical applicability of a technique we developed to identify and extract CBD stones using laparoscopic ultrasound (LUS). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed surgical procedures and clinical data of 13 patients who underwent LC and CBD exploration using LUS between May 2022 and August 2023...

Introduction: Hiatal hernia (HH) is a common disorder of the upper gastrointestinal (UGI) tract that general surgeons encounter. Giant paraesophageal is a subtype of HH in which more than 30% of the stomach is located in the chest. It can cause symptoms such as dysphagia, UGI bleeding, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and vomiting. As the life expectancy of the general population increases, the incidence of giant HH increases and can cause morbidity, including recurrent admissions and prolonged length of hospitalization...

Research examining the purported association between violent gaming and aggression remains controversial due to concerns related to methodology, unclear neurocognitive mechanisms, and the failure to adequately consider the role of individual differences in susceptibility. To help address these concerns, we used fMRI and an emotional empathy task to examine whether acute and cumulative violent gaming exposure were associated with abnormalities in emotional empathy as a function of trait-empathy. Emotional empathy was targeted given its involvement in regulating not only aggression, but also other important social functions such as compassion and prosocial behaviour...

In the current work, the foliar application of selenium nanomaterials (Se0 NMs) suppressed sheath blight in rice ( Oryza sativa ). The beneficial effects were nanoscale specific and concentration dependent. Specifically, foliar amendment of 5 mg/L Se0 NMs decreased the disease severity by 68.8% in Rhizoctonia solani -infected rice; this level of control was 1.57- and 2.20-fold greater than that of the Se ions with equivalent Se mass and a commercially available pesticide (Thifluzamide). Mechanistically, (1) the controlled release ability of Se0 NMs enabled a wider safe concentration range and greater bioavailability to Se0 NMs, and (2) transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses demonstrated that Se0 NMs simultaneously promoted the salicylic acid- and jasmonic-acid-dependent acquired disease resistance pathways, antioxidative system, and flavonoid biosynthesis...

The surface modification of amorphous carbon nanospheres (ACNs) through templates has attracted great attention due to its great success in improving the electrochemical properties of lithium storage materials. Herein, a safe methodology with toluene as a soft template is employed to tailor the nanostructure, resulting in ACNs with tunable surface pores. Extensive characterizations through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms elucidate the impact of surface pore modifications on the external structure, morphology, and surface area...

Currently, a major challenge in material engineering is to develop a cell-safe biomaterial with significant utility in processing technology such as 3D bioprinting. The main goal of this work was to optimize the composition of a new graphene oxide (GO)-based bioink containing additional extracellular matrix (ECM) with unique properties that may find application in 3D bioprinting of biomimetic scaffolds. The experimental work evaluated functional properties such as viscosity and complex modulus, printability, mechanical strength, elasticity, degradation and absorbability, as well as biological properties such as cytotoxicity and cell response after exposure to a biomaterial...
