Herein, we report the synthesis of two new series of angular (all-syn) ladder-type meta -[n]phenylenes (LMP, n = 3-8). One series contains keto groups at the termini bridges, denoted angular keto (AKn), the second contains alkyl groups at all bridge sp3 carbons, denoted angular alkyl (AAn). Their electronic and structural properties were delineated by a combination of electrochemistry and spectroscopic (UV-Vis and emission) methods and further supported by DFT calculations. Interestingly, experimental and DFT data show that changing the bridging group at the termini from alkyl (AAn) to keto (AKn) gives an increase in the first reduction potentials and LUMO energies, as the π-system is extended...

The increasing application of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in biomedicine requires extensive investigation of surface modification and stabilization to maximize their advantages for the diversity of more challenging biological utilization. Herein, a thiol-mediated multifunctional phospholipid ligand was designed while disclosing a zwitterionic nature to AuNPs. The ligand was synthesized by attachment to two bidentate lipoic acid (LA) anchor groups and incorporation of a zwitterionic phosphatidylcholine (PC) group, allowing for excellent hydrophilicity...

Chiral tetrakis(β-diketonate) Ln(III) complexes Δ-[NaLa(d-hfc)(4)(CH(3)CN)] (1) and Λ-[NaLa(l-hfc)(4) (CH(3)CN)] (2) (d/l-hfc(-) = 3-heptafluo-robutylryl-(+)/(-)-camphorate) are a pair of enantiomers and crystallize in the same Sohncke space group (P2(1)2(1)2(1)) with dodecahedral (DD) geometry. Typically positive and negative exciton splitting patterns around 320 nm were observed in the solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectra of complexes 1 and 2, which indicate that their shell configurational chiralities are Δ and Λ, respectively...

The UV mixing titration, gel electrophoresis, and CD measurements indicate that oligomers with a basic sequence of 5'-d-T-(C-T-)2C-(T-)4C-(T-C-)2T form a hairpin type triplex with the target 5'-d-A-(G-A-)2G. The stability, measured UV melting temperatures, were studied in aqueous solution as functions of mC (5-methylcytidine) replacement of C, pH (4 to 7), and salt concentrations (up to 1 M). The order of stability is 5'-d-A-(G-A-)2G + 5'-d-T-(C-T-)2C-(T-)4C-(T-C-)2T < 5'-d-A-(G-A-)2G + 5'-d-T-(mC-T-)2mC-(T-)4C-(T-C-)2T approximately 5'-d-A-(G-A-)2G + 5'-d-T-(C-T-)2C-(T-)4 mC-(T-mC-)2T < 5'-d-A-(G-A-)2G + 5'-d-T-(mC-T-)2mC-(T-)4mC-(T-mC-)2T at pH 4...

The membrane-bound beta-glucan synthase from Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) endosperm cells has been solubilized by both non-ionic and zwitterionic detergents. A complex relationship exists between the ratio of (1----3)-, (1----4)-, and (1----3, 1----4)-beta-glucan products of the solubilized enzyme, the cations present, and the concentration of the uridine 5'-diphosphoglucose substrate. Monoclonal antibodies directed against the beta-glucan synthase complex were generated by immunization of mice with an unfractionated microsomal reparation...
