Cancer is known as abnormal cell division and consisting of a group of diseases on various organ tissues. Many therapies are available in cancer treatment such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy etc. Without damaging normal tissue, there is a huge need for specified anticancer drugs which have effect only on abnormal cancer cells. Therefore, advances in anticancer drug discovery in treating cancer in the recent years, directed towards to the macromolecular targets. Heterocyclic molecules, such as fluconazole, acetazolamide, etc...

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounts for approximately 80% of all the primary malignant tumors of the liver. Hepatoblastoma (HBL) is the most common primary malignant neoplasm of the liver in childhood, and extremely rare in adults. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an adult case with cytopathologic description of a combined HCC and HBL, occurring in a noncirrhotic liver. CASE: A 24-year-old male was admitted to the hospital with right-sided abdominal pain...

The literature contains numerous studies on the diagnosis, pathogenesis, atypical locations, and clinical (hormonal) and surgical management of the disorder. However, no information is available on the management of endometriosis involving pain refractory to the usual treatment from the perspective of a pain unit. Our hospital has a pain unit specifically dedicated to pain in gynecology and obstetrics. The unit has been functioning since December 2005, and 52% of the attended patients have CPP of different origins...

BACKGROUND: We proposed a modified type III cordectomy for the treatment of early glottic cancer that removed the upper part of the vocalis muscle to improve glottic closure and voice outcomes. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with early glottic cancer underwent type III cordectomy, including 9 classical (proposed by European Laryngological Society) and 13 modified resections. Multidimensional voice evaluations were performed. RESULTS: Voice parameters including GRBAS (overall grade [G], roughness of the voice [R], breathiness [B], asthenicity [A], and strain [S]), jitter, shimmer, noise-to-harmonic ratio, maximum phonation time, voice handicap index-functional, physical, and total scores were better in modified resection...

Despite the theoretical advantages of continuous anesthesia in obstetric patients (good-quality blockade at low doses, good hemodynamic stability, rapid onset of effect, and no risk of toxicity), little has been published on this technique and its use in pregnancy. Moreover, few descriptive studies or comparative trials have evaluated the efficacy and safety of continuous spinal anesthesia, probably because of concerns about potential adverse effects-principally neurologic complications and postdural puncture headache...

For reasons of religious belief, Jehova's Witnesses do not accept blood transfusions or the infusion of blood products. In situations in which severe, life-threatening anemia develops, patient refusal to receive a transfusion can create serious ethical and legal problems. The principle of patient autonomy, which implies the freedom to accept or reject treatment, comes into conflict with the physician's obligation to safeguard the patient's life using all means possible. We report 2 cases of severe anemia in Jehova's Witnesses...

BACKGROUND: The human body has a number of endogenous free-radical scavenging systems. Paraoxonase1 (PON1) is one of the enzymes involved in such systems. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between bladder cancer and the polymorphism of PON1 which results in Q/R substitution at codon 192. This is the first report of this polymorphism in bladder cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy-six bladder cancer patients and 135 healthy controls took part in the study...

BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed the efficacy and safety of continuous spinal anesthesia in obstetrics, although placement of a catheter in the intrathecal space theoretically offers advantages in these patients. METHODS: Ninety-two women scheduled for elective cesarean delivery using continuous spinal anesthesia with the catheter-over-needle technique (22- or 24-gauge Spinocath) were included in the study. The doses of local anesthetic used, hemodynamic variables, use of ephedrine and other drugs, and incidence of complications such as technical failure and postdural puncture headache (PDPH) were recorded...

Ritodrine, a beta2-adrenergic agonist with a selective effect on the uterine muscle, is prescribed to prevent premature labor and to treat a hypertonic uterus. At therapeutic doses ritodrine has chronotropic and peripheral vasodilator effects. At high doses it has been related to sporadic cases of subendocardial necrosis, pulmonary edema, and death in pregnancy. We report the case of a pregnant woman who had a non-Q wave acute myocardial infarction after administration of ritodrine.

OBJECTIVES: To assess whether using a needle-locking device in combined spinal-epidural analgesia leads to better quality of pain relief for advanced stages of obstetric labor than can be achieved with conventional materials. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 230 women in advanced labor were randomized to 2 groups. In both groups the needle-through-needle technique was used. In group N we used a new technique with a Tuohy needle and a system for locking the spinal needle (27-gauge, pencil-point design)...
