This comprehensive study delves into the epidemiological landscape of Pulmonary Heart Disease (PHD) mortality in the United States from 1999 to 2020, leveraging the extensive CDC WONDER database. PHD encompasses conditions affecting the right side of the heart due to lung disorders or elevated pressure in the pulmonary arteries, including pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary embolism, and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). Analyzing data from death certificates, demographic characteristics, and geographical segmentation, significant trends emerge...

My scientific life in translational medicine runs in two parallel, yet often converging paths. The first, is four-decade-long commitment to develop new vaccines for parasitic and neglected tropical diseases, as well as pandemic threats. This includes a vaccine for human hookworm infection that I began as an MD-PhD student in New York City in the 1980s, and a new low-cost COVID vaccine that reached almost 100 million people in low- and middle-income countries. Alongside this life in scientific research, is one in public engagement for vaccine and neglected disease diplomacy to ensure that people who live in extreme poverty can benefit from access to biomedical innovations...

AIM: The purpose of this manuscript is to report the findings of a qualitative content analysis of interviews with VA Nurse Scientists about work life experiences, barriers, and facilitators across the enterprise. BACKGROUND: The VA enterprise is widely variable in terms of size, services, research activity, and budget. For this reason, the roles of nurses with a research-focused doctorate are also quite diverse. METHODS: We purposively sampled 18 PhD prepared Nurse Scientists based on a variety geographic locations, titles, and years in the field and who conduct research...

Normoxic inactivation of prolyl hydroxylase-2 (PHD-2) in tumour microenvironment paves the way for cancer cells to thrive under the influence of HIF-1α and NF-κB. Henceforth, the present study is aimed to identify small molecule activators of PHD-2. A virtual screening was conducted on a library consisting of 265,242 chemical compounds, with the objective of identifying molecules that exhibit structural similarities to the furan chalcone scaffold. Further, PHD-2 activation potential of screened compound was determined using in vitro 2-oxoglutarate assay...

Unstoppable global warming and increased frequency of extreme heat leads to human and animals easier to suffer from heat stress (HS), with gastrointestinal abnormalities as one of the initial clinical symptoms. HS induces intestinal mucosal damage owing to intestinal hypoxia and hyperthermia. Hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) activates numerous genes to mediate cell hypoxic responses; however, its role in HS-treated intestinal mucosa is unknown. This work aimed to explore HIF-1α function and regulatory mechanisms in HS-treated pig intestines...

BACKGROUND: Ethical sensitivity is defined as paying attention to ethical ideals in a conflict situation and being conscious of one's own role and duty in that situation. One essential element of ethical conduct is the ability to recognize and respond to ethical dilemmas. Lack of or diminished ethical awareness is a breach of nursing's professional obligation since it can lead to morally incongruent treatment. Thus, the purpose of this study is to assess the hemodialysis nurse's ethical awareness in Jizan, Saudi Arabia...

INTRODUCTION: Human resources in ophthalmology have recently received particular attention, and it has been questioned whether there is a sufficient number of workers. The aim of this study was to analyze and characterize Portugal's ophthalmologist population. METHODS: In this descriptive, cross-sectional study, an online questionnaire was sent to all ophthalmologists registered with the Portuguese College of Ophthalmology in December 2021. Information on the following variables was collected and analyzed: demographic factors, professional qualifications, professional activity, weekly professional activity and medium-term plans...

UNLABELLED: Paroxysmal Hypnogenic Dyskinesia (PHD) is a rare movement disorder characterized by involuntary movements, including chorea, athetosis, ballismus, and dystonia, which occur during the Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep stage. Therefore, the diagnosis of PHD is highly crucial due to the presence of differential diagnoses such as epilepsy and other sleep disorders. Although numerous mutations have been identified, the etiology of PHD, which arises from dysregulation in basal ganglia functions, remains unclear...

INTRODUCTION: Obesity increases the risk of morbidity and mortality. A major driver has been the increased availability of ultra-processed food (UPF), now the main UK dietary energy source. The UK Eatwell Guide (EWG) provides public guidance for a healthy balanced diet but offers no UPF guidance. Whether a healthy diet can largely consist of UPFs is unclear. No study has assessed whether the health impact of adhering to dietary guidelines depends on food processing. Furthermore, our study will assess the impact of a 6-month behavioural support programme aimed at reducing UPF intake in people with overweight/obesity and high UPF intakes...

PURPOSE: Real-world comparison of RRT modality on RRT dependence at 90 days postdischarge among ICU patients discharged alive after RRT for acute kidney injury (AKI). METHODS: Using claims-linked to US hospital discharge data (Premier PINC AI Healthcare Database [PHD]), we compared continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) vs. intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) for AKI in adult ICU patients discharged alive from January 1, 2018 to June 30, 2021. RRT dependence at 90 days postdischarge was defined as ≥2 RRT treatments in the last 8 days...
