Tetanus is a bacterial infection caused by the toxin of  Clostridium tetani . While it primarily affects newborns, people with incomplete vaccination schedules, it can also impact people of any age, especially in developing countries. Even though in the last 20 years several initiatives have been implemented worldwide to reduce the impact of this disease, regions like South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa have registered mortality rates highest since 2015-2019. In Latin America, regional immunization coverage rates were reported at 89% in 2017 for diphtheria-tetanus toxoid and pertussis (DTP-3), although Costa Rica has reported decreased coverage rates of the national immunization schedule from 2019 to 2021...

Among the various inflammatory myopathies, the anti-synthetase syndrome (ASS) is a rare entity with autoantibodies directed against aminoacyl-transfer ribonucleic acid synthetase. Its clinical spectrum ranges from myopathy and non-erosive arthritis to dyspnea and cough of pulmonary interstitial disease and from hyperkeratotic skin changes to spasms of blood vessels causing Raynaud's phenomenon. We present a case of a 21-year-old female who had been suffering from fever, night sweats, and weight loss for two years and had remained undiagnosed...

William Attree (1780-1846) came from a prominent family in Brighton, England. He studied medicine at St Thomas' Hospital, London, and there was unwell for nearly 6 months with severe 'spasms' of the hand/arm/chest (1801-1802). Attree qualified Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1803 and served as dresser to Sir Astley Paston Cooper (1768-1841). In 1806 Attree is recorded as 'Surgeon and Apothecary' of Prince's street, Westminster. In 1806 Attree's wife died in childbirth and the following year he underwent emergency amputation of the foot in Brighton following a road traffic accident...

Focal Hand Dystonia (FHD) is a disabling movement disorder characterized by involuntary movements, cramps and spasms. It is associated with pathological neural microcircuits in the cortical somatosensory system. While invasive preclinical modalities allow researchers to probe specific neural microcircuits of cortical layers and columns, conventional functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) cannot resolve such small neural computational units. In this study, we take advantage of recent developments in ultra-high-field MRI hardware and MR-sequences to capture altered digit representations and laminar processing in FHD patients...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy is a brain disorder consisting of abnormal electrical discharges of neurons resulting in epileptic seizures. The nature and spatial distribution of these electrical signals make epilepsy a field for the analysis of brain connectivity using artificial intelligence and network analysis techniques since their study requires large amounts of data over large spatial and temporal scales. For example, to discriminate states that would otherwise be indistinguishable from the human eye...

Tizanidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist used commonly by medical professionals to treat patients' chronic spasticity, muscle spasms, and neuralgia usually associated with myofascial components. This medication is also used very frequently in detoxification centers on patients treated for analgesic withdrawal, especially those who are suffering from rebound headaches due to the discontinuation of analgesics. Tizanidine is metabolized in the human body by the cytochrome P450 CYP1A2. On the other hand, ciprofloxacin is a common antibiotic belonging to the class of fluoroquinolones and is used to treat various infections...

The conventional radial approach has become the access route of choice for performing diagnostic or therapeutic coronary angiography. It has taken precedence over the femoral approach, which is subject to a higher rate of vascular and hemorrhagic complications. The distal radial approach is currently considered a further refinement of the conventional radial approach. It offers the advantage of potentially reducing local vascular complications (spasm, thrombosis of the radial artery), of allowing rapid mobilization of the wrist (hemostatic band against the scaphoid), of reducing the duration of hemostasis, and of preserving the proximal radial artery for future procedures such as arteriovenous bypasses or shunts...

Corneal stability is essential for contact lenses and refractive surgery. It seems that paralyzing eye drops or expansion of the ciliary muscle affect the radius of curvature and the strength of the cornea, and this effect is to increase the strength of the cornea during muscle spasm and decrease it in the relaxed state of the muscle. On the other hand, different factors (such as contact lens wear, ocular surface disorders, trauma, dry eye, and immunosuppression) could alter the immune defense mechanisms of the outer eye and permit microorganisms to invade the cornea...
