A cross‑sectional study was conducted in Libya in 7 areas of Tripoli to determine the seroprevalence of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) Virus (PPRV) in small ruminants (sheep and goats) between June and August 2013, and to identify the potential risk factors associated with the infection. The study involved 10% of small ruminant herds with ≥50 animals in the Tripoli region. They were selected randomly (15 herds), and 35 to 58 samples, depending on its size, were collected from each selected herd. Seven‑hundred and twenty‑one serum samples from unvaccinated animals (601 of sheep and 120 of goats) were collected and then tested using cELISA commercial kit in the National Center of Animal Health Laboratory in Tripoli, Libya...

INTRODUCTION: Delirium has been well studied among patients in the intensive care unit (ICU); however, data beyond the ICU is limited. The purpose of this study is to prospectively evaluate the incidence and associated risk factors for delirium in noncritical care areas (NCCA). METHODS: After institutional review board approval, a prospective cohort study was conducted at our urban Level I Trauma Center from December 2015 to February 2016. All patients admitted to the designated study area by a trauma surgeon were included...

OBJECTIVES: There is scarce data on the prevalence of OCD among adolescents in India. This study reports point prevalence of OCD among school students (age 12-18years) in the Kerala state of India and examines its association with ADHD, psychological distress, tobacco/alcohol abuse, suicide risk and history of sexual abuse. METHOD: 7560 students of 73 schools were self-administered the OCD subsection of Clinical Interview Schedule-Revised, the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) for obsessive compulsive symptoms and other relevant instruments to identify OCD and related clinical measures...

Though aminoglycosides are routinely used clinically as antimicrobial agents for the treatment of severe infections due to Klebsiella pneumoniae, resistance to the same is an increasing problem. One such resistance mechanism is the production of 16S rRNA methylases. The objective of the current study was to investigate the prevalence and molecular epidemology of 16S rRNA methylase genes among 43 K. pneumoniae isolates (each of which had at least one PQMR gene and ciprofloxacin minimum inhibitory concentration greater than 0...

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to define the prevalence and clinical ramifications of anemia in patients implanted with a continuous-flow left ventricular assist device (CF-LVAD). METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients implanted with a CF-LVAD from January 1, 2008, to April 30, 2012, were included in this retrospective cohort study. The primary outcome was the prevalence of anemia throughout the 1st year of device support. Secondary end points included the impact of anemia on rates of readmission to hospital and mortality...

AIM: The objective of this study was to investigate the drug treatment of AHT according to the grade and associated comorbidities: diabetes, chronic kidney disease, angina pectoris. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study is a retrospective one, comprising a total of 1064 patients admitted to the Clinical Rehabilitation Hospital lasi, Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Clinic between 01.01.2011 - 31.12.2012. We noted the epidemiological data on the distribution of AHT according to area of origin, sex, age, and the pharmacological treatment according to the AHT grade and related diseases...

Epidemiological studies have confirmed that benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and erectile dysfunction (ED) are correlated, independent of age or comorbidities as diabetes. Although researchers have not yet established a direct causal relationship between the two problems, several pathophysiological factors may serve to explain it, which include the alteration in nitric oxide bioavailability, increased autonomic activity, a1-adrenergic receptor hyperactivity, imbalance of RhoA/Rho-kinase, and metabolic syndrome X...

UNLABELLED: Salivary gland tumors represents approximately 3% of all head and neck neoplasms. Most of them are benign and located in the parotid gland. AIM: Epidemologic analysis of salivary gland neoplasms in the Wrocław ENT Department. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 304 patients (170 women, 134 men) with histologically confirmed salivary gland tumors treated in the years 2001-2010 were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Benign tumors were diagnosed in 83...

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus has reached epidemic proportions worldwide. South Asians are known to have an increased predisposition for diabetes which has become an important health concern in the region. We discuss the prevalence of pre-diabetes and diabetes in South Asia and explore the differential risk factors reported. METHODS: Prevalence data were obtained by searching the Medline® database with; 'prediabetes' and 'diabetes mellitus' (MeSH major topic) and 'Epidemology/EP' (MeSH subheading)...

There is strong evidence from multiple epidemological studies that lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and erectile dysfunction (ED) are correlated, independent of age or comorbidities as diabetes or hypertension. Although a direct causal relationship is not established yet, four pathophysiological mechanisms can explain the relationship. These include alteration in nitric oxide bioavailability, α1-adrenergic receptor hyperactivity, pelvic atherosclerosis and sex hormones. This association has different clinical implications on the management of both disorders...

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that 0.5 to 1 % of the total German population is chronically infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). This means that approximately 500 000 chronically infected individuals live in Germany and that around 10 % of them need antiviral treatment. According to an epidemiological calculation, around 42 % of them are migrants. The aim of our study was to gather more information on socio-demographic features of HBV patients and the sero-epidemological status and treatment of these patients...

Arc welding is one of the most common forms of welding and includes the use of stainless steel electrodes that emit fumes containing chromium and nickel. Epidemological studies suggest a correlation between arc welding and adverse respiratory health effects. Studies evaluating the immunotoxic effects of welding fumes are limited due to the large number of variables associated with welding. This work investigates the immunotoxic effects of welding fumes by analyzing the in vivo and in vitro IgM response to a T-dependent antigen after welding fume exposure...

METHODS: The possible association of brain tumour with headache was investigated in 100 patients seen for brain surgery. Preoperatively, 43 patients suffered from headache. These patients were thoroughly questioned about the nature of their pain. Investigation included the McGill Pain Questionnaire. RESULTS: In only 11 of the patients was headache the primary symptom of a brain tumour. Pain intensity was found to be lower in patients with brain tumour then in those with extracranial tumours or headache of other origins...

The question of the breast cancer in elderly is enlightened by two constituted epidemiological data bases in the United-States: the data basis of San Antonio and the SEER (Surveillance Epidemology and End Results) which represent a follow-up of 26% of the American population. The listed data allow an approach of the clinical and biological constituents according to the age of the disease as well as the factors of comorbidity. The informations relative to the therapeutic choices are more fragmentary and must be developed first and foremost during the programs...

Heteroyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) are a class of hazardous chemicals that are receiving heightened attention as a risk factor for human cancer. HAAs arise during the cooking of meats, fish, and poultry, and several HAAs also occur in tobacco smoke condensate and diesel exhaust. Many HAAs are carcinogenic and induce tumors at multiple sites in rodents. A number of epidemiologic studies have reported that frequent consumption of well-done cooked meats containing HAAs can result in elevated risks for colon, prostate, and mammary cancers...

BACKGROUND: Taking into account that one of the Spanish National Epidemological Surveillance Network's missions is that of providing information for taking action, it is then absolutely essential that its information be disseminated in a timely manner. This study is aimed at ascertaining what information is being published on the National Epidemology Center webpages and on those of the Municipal and Autonomous Community Epidemiological Surveillance Services and assessing the timeliness of the information published...
