Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is defined as a retrograde flow of urine from the urinary bladder to the kidneys. VUR can lead to renal damage in presence of urinary tract infection. In this case report, we performed prenatal ultrasound diagnosis to identify VUR of a fetus. Furthermore, this VUR case was confirmed by postnatal micturating cystourethrogram (MCUG). Hence, prenatal ultrasound detection of VUR is considered to be useful because it may provide us evidence to design therapeutic strategy to prevent potential renal damage as early as possible...

BACKGROUND: Micturating cystourethrograms (MCUG) are the gold standard for evaluating vesicoureteric reflux (VUR). There is a growing consensus for increasing the threshold for performing MCUGs following urinary tract infections (UTI) in children. There are several varying guidelines. It is important to detect high-grade reflux in the setting of an UTI because of potential long-term complications. OBJECTIVE: This audit aimed to retrospectively: (1) identify the conformance rate of local guidelines at the Women's and Children's Hospital (WCH); (2) assess predictors for an abnormal MCUG; and (3) compare local guidelines against the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne (RCH), National Institute for Healthcare and Excellence (NICE), and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines for selectively detecting high-grade reflux...

Unilateral renal agenesis with vesicoureteral reflux in the ipsilateral full length ureter is a rare phenomenon. Herein we report a case of 10-year old boy who presented with recurrent urinary tract infections. No renal tissue was identified on left side in various imaging studies. Micturating cystourethrogram (MCUG) showed left sided refluxing and blind ending ureter. Left ureterectomy was done because of recurrent UTI in the refluxing system.

BACKGROUND: The management of urethral stricture is a challenge to both the urologists and the patients. Thoughtful and satisfactory preoperative evaluation remains important to achieving good outcome. Retrograde urethrography and Micturating Cystourethrography (RUG/MCUG) have been the gold standard imaging technique in the evaluation of anterior urethral stricture but are not without inherent limitations and side effects. Sonourethrography (SUG) could diagnose anterior urethral stricture, measure its length, and detect presence of complications and extent of spongiofibrosis...

BACKGROUND: Performing micturiting cystourethrography (MCUG) in young children with recurrent urinary tract infections is controversial with discrepancy among the major guidelines. OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have shown that a normal dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) scintigraphy may avoid the need of performing MCUG for detecting vesicoureteric reflux in children with first febrile urinary tract infection. However, the role of DMSA for ruling out vesicoureteric reflux in children with recurrent urinary tract infections has not been studied...

BACKGROUND: Urinary Tract Infection implies presence of actively multiplying organisms in the urinary tract. Although it is infrequently associated with mortality, it is still a significant cause of morbidity. Early diagnosis is critical to preserve renal function of growing kidney. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to determine the clinical, microbiologic profile and antibiotic sensitivity of such infections in pediatric Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) patients at Dhulikhel Hospital...

Background: Vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) is a common urinary tract abnormality observed in children with urinary tract infection and children with VUR are at risk of reflux nephropathy and renal parenchymal damage. In Nepal, till date there are no published series of VUR in children. Aims and Objectives: To study the incidence of VUR in Nepalese children with Urinary tract infection (UTI), to analyze the age and sex wise distribution and clinical course of children with VUR together with the rate of spontaneous resolution of VUR in children Methodology: A retrospective hospital based study conducted at Department of Paediatrics Patan Hospital from June 2002 to December 2005...

The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of using Gafchromic XR-QA2 films in the measurements of patient entrance surface dose (ESD) during the micturating cystourethrogram (MCUG) examination in paediatric patients. Radiochromic films were used to map the entrance dose and to identify the location of peak surface dose (PSD). Direct in vivo measurements of entrance dose were conducted by placing a radiochromic film between the patient and the examination table. The measured ESD values for the commonly performed MCUG fluoroscopic examinations at the authors' institution was in the range of 1...

PURPOSE: VUR is a common urologic problem in children. Cystoscopic injection of bulking agents (most commonly Deflux) has gained popularity as the first line treatment in the west. However, primarily due to cost factors, it has not gained much popularity in our country. We present our initial experience with cystoscopic Deflux injection for VUR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed our 3-yr experience with the use of Dx/HA (Deflux) for correction of VUR in children and adolescents...

BACKGROUND: The indirect radionuclide cystogram (IRC) has generally been reported as being less sensitive for detecting vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR) than the micturating cystourethrogram (MCUG), so we modified it in an attempt to increase its sensitivity. METHODS: We altered our routine IRC protocol by including the data obtained during failed voids, adding extra imaging sequences at intervals during bladder filling, and by using simple mathematical criteria to determine if VUR was present when visual imaging results were equivocal...

INTRODUCTION: The UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) introduced guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and management of urinary tract infection (UTI) in children and adolescents in August 2007. AIM: The primary aim was to determine whether publication of NICE guidelines was associated with a change in the use of diagnostic imaging investigations in patients with a documented first UTI in a tertiary children's hospital. Secondary aims were to describe the epidemiology, microbiology, prescription of prophylactic antibiotics and follow-up for these children, and the incidence of structural renal tract abnormalities, vesicoureteric reflux and renal uptake defects identified...

BACKGROUND: Anorectal malformation is a complex anomaly with a broad variety of expressions. There are different techniques available for correction of the anomaly, all with their specific morbidity. Recently, much attention has been paid to acquired posterior urethral diverticulum after correction of anorectal malformation. The aim of this retrospective study was to reappraise the laparoscopic approach to correction of the anorectal malformation with respect to what can be prevented and what can be improved...

Atypical UTI was defined as in the NICE UTI guideline. Overall, 576 boys and 244 girls aged below 24 months were reviewed.
