The capability to on-line sense tissue function, provide stimulation to control contractility and efficiently release drugs within an engineered tissue microenvironment may enhance tissue assembly and improve the therapeutic outcome of implanted engineered tissues. To endow cardiac patches with such capabilities we developed elastic, biodegradable, electronic scaffolds. The scaffolds were composed of electrospun albumin fibers that served as both a substrate and a passivation layer for evaporated gold electrodes...

Hearing loss is common and caused by a wide range of molecular and cellular pathologies. Current diagnosis of hearing loss depends on a combination of physiologic testing, patient history, and in some cases genetic testing. Currently, no biopsy or equivalent procedure exists to diagnose inner ear disorders. MicroRNAs (miRNA) are short ribonucleic acids that regulate a variety of cellular processes. They have been found to be reliable markers for a variety of disease processes. In particular, a variety of miRNAs that are markers for neurodegenerative disease have been identified in cerebrospinal fluid...

BACKGROUND: Tracheal reconstruction is complicated by the short length to which a trachea can be resected. We previously developed a biocompatible polypropylene frame artificial trachea, but it lacked the strength and flexibility of the native trachea. In contrast, nitinol may provide these physical characteristics. We developed a novel nitinol frame artificial trachea and examined its biocompatibility and safety in canine models. METHODS: We constructed several nitinol frame prototypes and selected the frame that most closely reproduced the strength of the native canine trachea...

BACKGROUND: There have been very few reports on isolated medial tibial plateau osteonecrosis, and the condition has not been clearly described. Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) may be an appropriate treatment method for this condition. The aims of this study were to report our experience of using mobile-bearing knee implants for osteonecrosis of the medial tibial plateau and to discuss the etiology and treatment of this type of osteonecrosis. METHODS: This study included six consecutive patients with isolated medial tibial plateau osteonecrosis treated with an Oxford mobile-bearing knee implant...

The present work proposes a simple, novel fixation concept for short stem hip endoprostheses, which preserves the pre-surgery force flow through femoral bone to an unprecedented extent. It is demonstrated by finite element analyses that a standard implant model endowed with minor geometrical changes can overcome bone loading reduction and can achieve almost physiological conditions. The numerical results underpin that the key aspect of the novel, so-called "collar cortex compression concept CO4 " is the direct, almost full load transmission from the implant collar to the resected femur cortex, which implies that the implant stem must be smooth and therefore interacts mainly by normal contact with the surrounding bone...

Objective To study the effect of muscle segment homeodomain homeobox 2 (MSX2) on the expression of enamel matrix protein and the formation of enamel. Methods Immunohistochemical staining was used to detect the expression of MSX2 in mouse tooth embryos and its localization in ameloblasts. The short hairpin RNA (shRNA) of the MSX2 gene was designed and synthesized, and then the annealed double stranded DNA was constructed into the pGMLV-SC5 RNAi lentivirus vector, and finally it was packaged with lentivirus. The lentivirus was used to infect ameloblasts...

Among 230,360 women with diagnosed HIV in the United States (U.S.), ~ 8,500 give birth annually, and unplanned pregnancies (as with HIV-negative women) are prevalent. However, unplanned pregnancies and contraceptive use among HIV-positive women have been understudied. To examine unplanned pregnancies and contraceptive use among HIV-positive women, we used 2013-2014 data from the Medical Monitoring Project (MMP), an HIV surveillance system that produces national estimates for HIV-positive adults in care in the U...

Dentistry is a continuously changing field that has witnessed much advancement in the past century. Prosthodontics is that branch of dentistry that deals with replacing missing teeth using either fixed or removable appliances in an attempt to simulate natural tooth function. Although such "replacement therapies" appear to be easy and economic they fall short of ever coming close to their natural counterparts. Complications that arise often lead to failures and frequent repairs of such devices which seldom allow true physiological function of dental and oral-maxillofacial tissues...

BACKGROUND: Short nose elongation is a relatively common rhinoplasty procedure, especially in Asia. The selection of the adequate graft material is challenging. Previous reports have described the application of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) for dorsal augmentation rhinoplasty, but studies using ePTFE for nose elongation are lacking. We propose ePTFE as an alternative treatment for short noses, describe the technique, and discuss outcomes, patient selection, and complications based on our 14-year experience...

PURPOSE: Different implant-abutment connections are available and it has been claimed they could have an effect on marginal bone loss. The aim of this review is to establish if implant connection configuration influences peri-implant bone loss (PBL) after functional loading. METHODS: A specific question was formulated according to the Population, Intervention, Control, and Outcome (PICO): Does the type of implant-abutment connection (external, internal, or conical) have an influence on peri-implant bone loss? A PubMed/MEDLINE electronic search was conducted to identify English language publications published in international journals during the last decade (from 2006 to 2016)...

BACKGROUND: Decision making regarding a patient who has experienced a first clinical episode of atrial fibrillation (AF) is challenging, and the AF recurrences should be a significant consideration. Continuous long-term rhythm monitoring via implantable loop recorders (ILRs) has enabled us to evaluate the AF recurrence profile after the first clinical episode and to investigate clinical parameters associated with the course of the arrhythmia. HYPOTHESIS: Continuous rhythm monitoring via ILRs in AF patients after the first clinical episode is of clinical significance and precisely evaluate the AF recurrence profile...

PURPOSES: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a dramatic condition resulting in joint destruction in the late stages. Total hip arthroplasty allows function recovery with satisfactory implant survival. Recently, the use of uncemented short stems has been suggested to improve the conservation of bone stock. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study on 16 hip arthroplasties-11 patients-implanted for ONFH between 2008 and 2017. We aimed to compare the outcomes of the two types of arthroplasty-"uncemented short" vs "cemented conventional" femoral stem-in terms of pain (visual analogue scale), function (Harris Hip Score), and survival (radiography)...
