BACKGROUND: Lymphatic malformations are benign cystic lesions that, while rare, tend to affect the pediatric age group. There are no reported cases diagnosed prenatally. CASE: A 28-year-old G1 woman at 34 weeks gestation was scanned for placental localization at a community ultrasound clinic. A fetal cystic, sublingual structure was identified. The patient was referred to our tertiary care centre, where a small (1.3 cm) avascular, cystic structure under the tongue of the fetus was confirmed...

OBJECTIVES: To investigate diagnostic value of imaging procedures and management strategies of the patients with nipple discharge (ND) to establish management recommendations. METHODS: Bibliographical search in French and English languages by consultation of PubMed, Cochrane and Embase databases. RESULTS: Although, all ND require an systematic evaluation guided by clinical data, bloody ND could be a predictor of breast cancer risk among different colors of discharge particularly in patients of more than 50 years (LE2)...

PURPOSE: We evaluated the safety and usefulness of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) assisted by ultrasound-computed tomography three-dimensional (US-CT 3D) dual imaging for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: HIFU ablation was performed in 13 patients with small HCC (≤3 lesions, ≤3 cm in diameter). The HIFU system (Chongqing Haifu Tech) was used under ultrasound guidance. By transferring the sagittal or axial plane of the 3D US and the CT volume data into the ZioM900, multiplanar reconstruction images were displayed in a manner resembling conventional monitor US to assist the HIFU treatment...

Cavernous transformation of the portal vein occurs with long-standing portal vein thrombosis (PVT) because of the development and dilatation of multiple small vessels in and around the recanalising main portal vein. Thrombosis and occlusion of the portal vein leads to portal hypertension with enlarged spleen and the development of porto-systemic collaterals. The main clinical presentation is gastroesophageal variceal bleeding and hematologic abnormalities due to splenomegaly (hyperspleenismus-pancytopenia)...

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to compare the accuracy of hydrosonography with that of transvaginal ultrasonography in detection of intracavitary pathologies in patients with history of abnormal uterine bleeding. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, and unblinded study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 197 women (n = 130 premenopausal and n = 67 postmenopausal) aged between 23 and 71 years (mean age 45.7 +/- 8.9) presenting with a history of abnormal uterine bleeding were included into the study...

BACKGROUND: Nodules of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) located in the hepatic dome cannot be depicted on ultrasography because of pulmonary air. Therefore, percutaneous treatment is not possible in such cases. The purpose of this study was to clarify the feasibility and safety of percutaneous sonographically guided radiofrequency (RF) ablation with the concurrent use of artificial pleural effusion for HCC located in the right subphrenic region. METHODS: Between May 2001 and June 2002, 24 patients with 28 HCC nodules located directly below the diaphragm were enrolled in this study...

OBJECTIVES: endorectal ultrasound (EUS) is currently accepted as the best technique for the preoperative study of patients with rectal tumors, and surgical decisions depend increasingly on EUS staging. The main pitfalls in staging rectal tumors are over- or understaging as well as errors in imaging lymph nodes. Being aware of such errors and their causes may help to improve the overall results. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of EUS in staging rectal neoplasms, and to study potential sources of error...
